'We had the incredible good fortune', writes Lucie Aubrac, 'to l i v e a s ourselves - we did not have to adopt false identities or go into hiding - until the spring of 1943'. (This) is her harrowing account of the months of her most audacious participation in the Resistance: the months when, pregnant with her s ec on d c hi l d, she planned and took part in raids to free captive comrades - including her own husband, under Nazi death sentence - from the prisons of Klaus Barbie, the infamous 'Butcher of Lyon'." Starting right after the fall of France, he supplied false documents, money, transport, and shelter to more than 1,600 people. Those rescued were chiefly Sephardic Jews of Bordeaux, but also included a co v e y o f n uns, some French soldiers evading prison camps, and Allied flyers fleeing captivity. He was assisted by his wife, Laure, and his daughter, Irene, his employees in his clothing stores, and all the residents of the village of Bascons, ne ar t h e bo r de r between Occupied and Vichy France, where he was mayor. Risking death daily, Laporterie managed to outmaneuver and fool the Germans repeatedly. A true Christian, he loved others regardless of the consequences. CHILDREN OF THE BENARES: A WAR CRIME AND ITS VICTIMS., Barker, Ralph.
5 Barker, Ralph. CHILDREN OF THE BENARES: A WAR CRIME AND ITS VICTIMS.
Methuen, London, 1987, first edition.
172 pp, 8vo (8 3/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0413423107 B&w photographs. "When the passenger liner 'City of Benares' sailed from Liverpool on Friday, 13 September 1940 she was carrying 90 evacuee children from the bombed cities of Brit ain, bound under a government-sponsored scheme for a safe haven in Canada. Her sinking by U-boat four days later, without warning, in total disregard of the plight of survivors and in defiance of international law, shocked and horrified the c i v i l i s ed world. Of 406 people on board 256 were lost - including, at first count, 83 of the evacuee children. In Britain and the Commonwealth the reaction was one of righteous indignation, accompanied by an intense desire for retribution. N or w as t he propaganda value neglected, a broadcast by King George VI the day after the news broke being clearly directed at neutral America. 'The world,' he said, 'could have no clearer proof of the wickedness against which we fight than th is fou l d eed '. Su s picions subsequently arose, however, that the British authorities had quite as much to answer for as the Nazis. Parents who, despite many misgivings, had entrusted their children to the scheme when invasion threatened, began to ask que stio ns when t hey learned that the promised naval escort had abandoned the convoy twenty-one hours before the 'Benares' was sunk. Allegations that crew members rushed the boats, that emergency equipment had failed, and that the whol e vo yage had b een u nde rtake n u nder the blight of racial prejudice, demanded a formal investigation. But somehow this was avoided, and the scandal was successfully hushed up. Ralph Barker, after a vivid and poignant reconstruction of the disa ster, turn s his attent ion to wha t re ally happened behind the scenes at the Admiralty and the Ministry of Shipping. The result is a harrowing story of human fallibility and human survival." Light to moderate browning to pages and edges of text block , mino r wrin kling a t to p/botto m of spine. 6 Bata, Thomas J. With Sonja Sinclair. BATA: SHOEMAKER TO THE WORLD.
Toronto Stoddart 1990 0773724168 / 9780773724167 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good
341 pp, 9 1/2" H. B&w photographs. "In 1932, when young Tom Bata watched his father's coffin being lowered into his grave, he silently promised to abide by the wishes expressed in his father's 'moral testament': that the Bata Shoe Company was to be treated not as a source of private wealth, but as a public trust, a means of improving the liviing standards within the community and providing customers with good value for their money. At the time, Tom had no idea of the challenges he would face in fulfilling that promise. Not only was he ill-equipped, at age eighteen, to step into the shoes of an acknowledged business genius, creator of the largest shoe manufacturing and retailing organization in the world. Worse than that, fate was about to deal him a series of painful blows. The subjugation of his homeland, Czechoslovakia, by the Nazis was followed by an acrimonious family rift, the expropriation by Communist regimes of all his holdings in Eastern and Central Europe and, in other parts of the world, economic and political upheavals that threatened the survival of the newly resuscitated Bata organization. Yet Bata actually thrived on the sudden change and adversity. From his new home base in Canada he built, this side of the Iron Curtain, a global empire that employs 70,000 people and plays an important part in the economies of many developing countries. (This) is the story of the man, his family and their business." Remainder mark (dot) on bottom of text block, light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine. Dust jacket has light edge wrinkling - mainly at top/bottom of spine and at top of rear flap, very light rubbing.

At seventeen, he shot his first man; at eighteen he hunted a double-murderer across the velds of Rhodesia. By the time he was twenty-four he had fought (and was twice wounded) at ill-fated Gallipoli and o n t h e w estern front through the Great War of 1914-19. Excitement dogged his footsteps as he sailed round the Horn in a windjammer; fought in a Brazilian revolution; crossed the Andes on foot; was nearly killed in a stampede of wild cattle; and w a s th e s ol e survivor of a gold-seeking hunt in the Amazon. Back in England, jobless, he did a stint as a reporter on a gossip 'sheet'; became a stunt actor, then press agent, in the movies; and in 1938, on the continent, established an under gro un d for J ew s f leeing from Hitler's persecution, subsequently himself falling into the hands of the Gestapo. Caskie, Minister of the Scottish Kirk in Paris, preached for the last time in four years, said goodbye to his congregation, locked the chur ch and joined the mass-exodus from the city. A Highlander, he denounced Hitler from his pulpit. He was on the Gestapo 'Black List'. After a perilous journey - he was mobbed by French villagers who thought him a German paratrooper and machi n e - g u n n ed from the air - he arrived in Marseilles and commandeered the British Seamen's Mission near the Old Harbour. There the adventures of 'The Tartan Pimpernel' began. Immediately contacted by Allied Intelligence Officers he was conscri pt ed t o se rv ic e. He fed, clothed and gave the men shelter before sending them through the Pyrenees with forged papers to Sp ain . He co lle cte d m ilitary information for the Allies. VICTORY IN THE ST. LAWRENCE: CANADA'S UNKNOWN WAR., Essex, James W.
13 Essex, James W. VICTORY IN THE ST. LAWRENCE: CANADA'S UNKNOWN WAR.
Erin, Ontario Boston Mills Press 1984 0919822568 / 9780919822566 First Edition Hard Cover Near Fine Very Good
160 pp, 11 1/4" H. Map endpapers (showing locations of ships torpedoed in Gulf and River of St. Lawrence and Canada's Coastal Waters), b&w photographs, drawings. "The sailor next to me reached into his topcoat pocket and hurriedly proferred a crumpled photograph. I recognized it as the military funeral of 1942 at the tiny Anglican Church just down the road. It was the burial of a seaman from the HMCS 'Charlottetown', one of several who had been rescued, only to die of wounds later. He was killed in Canada by the Nazis. This book in a real sense, then, is his story and the story of hundreds of others who perished because of the German U-boats in the St. Lawrence. As Cmdr. George Bernard, Naval Officer in Command, Gaspe from 1943 to the war's end said in later years: 'In 1942, marauding U-Boats entered the Gulf of St. Lawrence and did a great deal of damage. They roamed the Gulf and River St. Lawrence at will and were seldom opposed. They sank Canadian warships and valuable merchant vessels almost with impunity.' According to Bernard, it was for this reason that Canadian authorities played down the episode. They were prepared to accept the consequences because warships which might have attacked the U-boats invading our inland waters were wanted more urgently elsewhere. This was 'Victory in the St. Lawrence' - initially for the German U-boat: Canada's turn would come next. But what happened to both remained locked in the memories of the participants only now being revealed long years after the war ended. This was 'Canada's Unknown War'." Minor wrinkle at top of spine. ARNHEM LIFT - AND THE GERMAN VERSION. (NEW AND EXPANDED EDITION)., Hagen, Louis. Foreword by Lieutenant-General Sir Frederick A.M. Browning. (Winrich Behr.)
17 Hagen, Louis. Foreword by Lieutenant-General Sir Frederick A.M. Browning. (Winrich Behr.) ARNHEM LIFT - AND THE GERMAN VERSION. (NEW AND EXPANDED EDITION).
Leo Cooper, London, 1993, new, expanded and revised edition.
118 pp, large 8vo (9 1/2" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0850523753 B&w photographs, maps. "The airborne troops who landed at Arnhem in September 1944 suffered appalling casualties in the course of the nine-day battle; of some 10,000 men who went into action, 1,400 were killed and more than 6,000 - about a thrid of them wounded - were captured. British accounts have almost invariably praised the Germans' humane treatment of these prisoners. Had the young Sergeant 'Lewis Haig' b e e n c a ptured, however, his fate would have been markedly different, for the Nazis would have reacted with characteristic savagery to a German of Jewish extraction fighting against them as a member of the elite Glider Pilot Regiment. But 'Hai g' - L ou i s Ha gen - was one of the few who got back, to write the first and, as is widely accepted, one of the very best personal accounts of the battle....Forty-five years after the battle, at a dinner party in Germany, the author found himsel f n ext to a ma n of about his own age, the former Major Winrich Behr who had been Adjutant to Field-Marshal Model during the Arnhem battle. The two men became friends. Louis Hagen's interest in the battle was rekindled and Behr told him his own sid e of the st ory , whi ch is included here. Here, too, are balanced assessments of the planning and strategy of the operation, of the remarkable German reaction to the airborne incursion, and of the reasons for its failure." HITLER & GELI., Hayman, Ronald.

Bloomsbury, London, 1997, first edition.
240 pp, large 8vo (9 7/16" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0747527237 B&w photographs, family tree. "Few people know about the affair Adolf Hitler had with his niece, Geli Raubal. It started in 1927, when he was thirty-eight and she was nine teen. Already leader of the National Socialist German Workers' Party, he had been imprisoned after the unsuccessful putsch of 1923, released at the end of 1924 and had been banned from speaking in public. It was then that he decided to rent a h o u s e in Obersaltzberg, an small alpine village close to the Austrian border. Geli came to live with him there, together with her mother, Angela Raubal, his widowed half-sister, but the ban was lifted before the Raubals moved in. Hitler could r e la x wi th his niece as he never had before with anyone else, and enjoyed her constant availability. He adored her and they could talk to each other uninhibitedly. The couple shared a strangely intense, passionate relationship, but it was al way s dog ge d b y H itler's intolerance, his chauvinistic attitude to womanhood and his possessive jealousy. Later, the weakening of the bond between (them) coincided with the phenomenal rise in the popularity of the Nazis...In 1931, aged twenty-t hree , Geli Ra ubal was found dead in the Munich flat she shared with Hitler, his revolver on the floor and an unfinished letter on the table. Hitler was shattered by his niece's death, and for the rest of his life couldn't speak of her without becom in g emo tion al... (This book) examines the degeneracy in the family Hitler and Geli came from and the emotional and sexual problems Hitler suffered, thus giving the reader an opportunity to take new bearings on Hitler as a man." 203 pp, 9 1/2" H. B&w photographs, maps. "The full story of the year Hitler's guided missiles fell on London. Only five minutes from launch to impact - not even enough time to sound an air raid alert. They could not be tracked and they traveled too high and too fast to be shot down. - This is no scenario of World War III, but the story of the development of the Nazi's secret weapons and the devastation they wrought that, given a little more time, might have turned the tide of World War II. Seen through the eyes of the Germans who devised and launched these weapons, as well as the people on the receiving end, here is an unprecedented 'you are there' reconstruction of those times when the death throes of the Nazi empire claimed tens of thousands of Allied civilian casualties. (The author) interviewed eyewitnesses on both sides of the Atlantic while researching 'V-1/V-2', and he was given access to previously classified documents and photographs." 20 Johnston, S. Paul. FLYING SQUADRONS: A GRAPHIC HISTORY OF THE U.S. ARMY AIR FORCES.
New York Duell, Sloan and Pearce 1942 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good - Fair
234 pp, 9 3/4" H. Profusely illustrated with b&w photographs. "(C)ombines rare and startling pictures with a thoroughly authoritative text to tell the story (of the 'Flying Squadrons'). (Johnston) points out how, from the very earliest flights of man, people foresaw the military possibilities of aviation: Franklin, in his letters after he watched the Montgolfier ascensions; Napoleon, in his Egyptian campaign; the Danes, during the Swedish conflict of 1830. Briefly but penetratingly he tells the story of the early twentieth-century experiments, and of what happened to aviation in the first World War. He shows what position of our air power was in 1919, and how that position changed in the Twenties and Thirties: experimentation, discouragement, retrogression, new ideas, organization, the attitude of the army leaders, of government leaders, of industry. Finally, he presents the whole picture of our Army Air Force as it was constituted on December 7th, 1941. He describes all types of airplanes that have been developed - the interceptor and convoying pursuit plane, the light, medium, and heavy bomber, the transports, the reconnaissance, liaison, trainer planes. He then tells of the make-up of Army Air Force personnel and of the training courses. He gives data on the size of our Air Force, on the programs mapped out, on lessons learned from the Nazis and from the British, and how these lessons are being applied.
