192 pp, 11" H, soft cover. ISBN 1861267754 Profusely illustrated in colour and b&w. "The clothed figure is a fascinating subject for beginner and experienced artist alike. While the human body offers a physical and psychological point of interes t, the clad figure gives even further scope with which to tell a story. Working from the naked body through to the draped and attired model, this book is essential because it focuses uniquely on the figure and cloth while addr es si ng t he p ra c ti calities of using various drawing and painting techniques to transfer what you see onto the two-dimensional surface. Achieve correct proportion through measurement; Increase knowledge of body form; Draw the draped figure u sin g l ine an d t one wi th mi xed media; Use mark-making to describe fabric both in texture and in colour; Paint clothes and figures using varied painting methods; Develop individual expression and visual language." 362 pp, large 8vo (9 1/4" H). "(G)limpses the world of actors as experienced by Canadian performers. In their own words, more than two hundred actors share shocking, funny, terrifying, sometimes poignant stories of adventures, mishaps, gaffes, disasters, and moments of joy they have known in the course of their working lives on and off stage. The collection of over 450 stories begins with tales of 'The Audition' and early performing experiences of some familiers faces, such as Wayne and Schuster, William Shatner, Robert Goulet, and Martin Short. It chronicles life on tour from Russia to the Ozarks to above the Arctic circle. It elucidates the trials of props, sets, and wardrobe that refuse to function as intended, the agonies of surviving the unexpected, whether it be a four-legged cast member going into labour, an actor who has somehow forgotten an entrance, a sudden on-stage bout with very real food poisoning, or the often hilarious contributions from members of the audience." THE COUNTESS., Johns, Rebecca.
6 Johns, Rebecca. THE COUNTESS.
New York Crown 2010 0307588459 / 9780307588456 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good
285 pp, large 8vo (9 1/2" H). "In this riveting dramatization of Erzebet Bathory's life, the countess tells her story in her own words, written to her only son - a final reckoning from his mother in an attempt to reveal the truth behind her downfall. Countess Bathory describes her upbringing in one of the most powerful noble houses in Hungary, recounting in loving detail her devotion to her parents and siblings as well as the heartbreak of losing her father at a young age. She soon discovers the price of being a woman in sixteenth-century Hungary as her mother arranges her marriage to Ferenc Nadasdy, a union made with the cold calculation of a financial transaction. Young Erzebet knows she has no choice but to accept this marriage even as she laments its loveless nature and ultimately turns to the illicit affections of another man. Seemingly resigned to a marriage of convenience and a life of surreptitious pleasure, the countess surprises even herself as she ignites a marital spark with Ferenc through the most unromantic of acts: the violent punishment of an insolent female servant. The event shows Ferenc that his wife is no trophy but a strong, determined woman more than capable of managing their vast estates during Ferenc's extensive military campaigns against the Turks. Her naked assertion of power accomplishes what her famed beauty could not: capturing the love of her husband. The countess embraces this new role of loving wife and mother, doing everything she can to expand her husband's power and secure her family's future. But a darker side surfaces as Countess Bathory's demand for virtue, obedience, and, above all, respect from her servants take a sinister turn. What emerges is not only a disturbing, unflinching portrait of the deeds that gave Bathory the moniker 'Blood Countess', but an intimate look at the woman who became a monster." Remainder dot on bottom of textblock near spine, light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, tiny bump on top edge of front board. Dust jacket has some areas of light edge wrinkling, light rubbing.

354 pp, small 8vo (7 5/8" H). Pale orange/buff cloth with black lettering on spine, black lettering and decoration on front board. "Marco was sitting in his chair in the little private beach on rocky Spanish Cape, and he was quite dead. The dashing, handsome despoiler of women seemed to be musing no doubt on the hold he had over the frantic, desperate women in the house above him. For there was a faint smile on his strong and mocking face. But around his neck was an ugly line of red. The really startling thing about Marco's corpse was that he was naked. Under the long opera cloak draped about his virile figure, he was without coat, trousers or shirt - completely nude! Yet of all the people gathered at the house of Walter Godfrey, eccentric millionaire, on remote Spanish Cape, Marco's was the only face that did not wear the tense mask of dread. It was fortunate indeed that Ellery Queen, that amiable maestro of murder, happened to be vacationing nearby. He it is that solves the brutal and baffling case of the murdered philanderer, to the mingled horror and delight of the most hardened reader." Light browning to pages, a few pages with wrinkle at top part of page, minor edge wear, light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine. Dust jacket has very light edge wear/wrinkling and a few tiny tears at top/bottom of spine, minor darkening at top/bottom edges of flaps, protected in a mylar sleeve.

Stoddart, Toronto, 1999, first edition.
332 pp, large 8vo (9 1/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0773731946 "For millenia, we lived in harmony with the Earth, taking only what we required to survive. But in just the past few centuries, we have used our powers to thrill and amuse o urselves, to satisfy our obsession with consumption and new technology, without regard for the consequences. And in doing so, we have exploited our surroundings on an unprecedented scale. In (this book, the authors) lucidly describe how we have e v olved beyond our needs, trampling other species, believing that we can make the Earth work the way we want it to. And they introduce us to the people who are fighting back, those who are resisting the inexorable advance of the 'global economy' ju gg ernaut, the people whose voices are difficult to hear over the din of corporate PR machines. We learn about how human arrogance - demonstrated by our disregard for the small and microscopic species that constitute the Earth's engine, and our rec kle ss use of technological inventions like powerful herbicides or genetically engineered crops - is threatening the health of our children and the safety of our food supply. But it's not too late to change our course. (The book) shows that we are at a turning point - we can either push ahead on our path to destruction, or we can reshape our place in nature and prosper."
