Phaidon, Oxford, (1989).
126 pp + index, 4to (11 1/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. Profusely illustrated with color and b&w reproductions. "John W. Waterhouse (1849-1917) was acclaimed during his lifetime as one of England's finest painters. This judgment has been endorsed in recent years as the painter's reputation - and the value of his work - have reached new heights...He began to exhitit in the 1870s and from then on his career unfolded steadily; he was elected a full Royal Academician in 1895, and his Diploma painting, 'The Mermaid', remains one of the best-loved of all Victorian paintings. Waterhouse was a master of narrative painting, and in his historical and mythological works he displayed an unerring feeling for the dramatic moment, combined with a fine sense of composition and superb painting technique. But above all it is the haunting beauty of his wistful female models that has ensured his lasting popularity...Anthony Hobson brings a painter's eye to the appreciation of Waterhouse, and with its outstanding colour reproductions this new study will finally establish the artist as one of the great masters of Victorian painting." 98 pp, 11 1/4" H. Profusely illustrated in color. "Since his professinal debut nearly 20 years ago, artist Don Maitz has been giving form to the fantastic in a way that has won him widespread recognition by both his professional peers and an enthusiastic public. Following up on the success of 'First Maitz', this volume is a lavishly produced collection of some of Maitz's most popular works, as well as some never-before-published paintings. Exhibiting a fanatical attention to detail, the paintings apply surrealist technique to surreal situations. Maitz likes to mix modern imagery with medieval icons and his pictures frequently display a keen sense of wit. (He) has designed more than 250 book covers for some of today's leading authors of cutting-edge science fiction, including Isaac Asimov, Ray Bradbury, Piers Anthony, Stephen King, Raymond E. Feist, C.J. Cherryh, Janny Wurts and Gene Wolfe. His visceral and adventurous visions have also attracted commercial clients for national advertising: Eastman Kodak, NBC, and Captain Morgan Spiced Rum. (He) has received the Silver Medallion from the American Society of Illustrators, the Hugo Award and the Howard Award for Best Artist at the Sixth World Fantasy Convention." London Arkana 1987 1850630526 / 9781850630524 First Edition Soft Cover Very Good Chesca Potter.
205 pp, small 8vo (7 3/4" H). B&w illustrations. "On one level (this) is a literary guide and deals with the mythological patterns which underlie the Mabinogion. On another, it is a deep exploration of the Western Mysteries as they emerge from the tales of the Four Branches, of Colhwch and Olwen and Taliesin. Within these stories lie the identities of two major figures of the native tradition: Mabon, the Wondrous Youth who is lost and found, and Modron, his mother, the Great Goddess herself. Here the initiatory pattern of Britain's inner guardians is revealed in the Succession of the Pendragons; the release of Mabon is affected with the help of the Totem Beasts, before the birth of time; while the cosmic harp of the Wondrous Youth ushers in the Aquarian Age. Drawing on this first exploration of the Mabinogion, the reader can trace for himself the archetypes and mythological themes from which these medieval stories, themselves descendants of proto-Celtic oral tradition, are derived." Exterior - minor edge wear, soft crease at top part of front hinge, light browning to edges of text block, small soft corner crease on rear cover, spine flat and uncreased, ISBN label on rear cover.
