548 pp, 9 1/2" H. B&w photographs. Of the 1,350 Victoria Crosses awarded since 1856, only 51 have been conferred on airmen. "Here, for the first time, are the complete and accurate biographies of each of those 51 men. Though primarily regarded as a British honour, of those 51 airmen, 16 were not British-born; coming from Canada, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa and Eire willingly to pledge their lives in Britain's cause during the two major world wars of this century. Resulting from several decades of private research on an international scale, and profusely illustrated, this book has undoubtedly become the standard reference work on the subject of air VCs. 192 pp, 4to (11 1/4" H). Pictorial endpapers, b&w and colour photographs, reproductions. "This book is a combination of stories about the Canadian Avro Lancaster bomber. It is a description of those planes built in Malton, Ontario, by the Victory Aircraft Ltd., and the lives of two aircraft in particular. The first story is that of KB726, now known as the Mynarski Memorial Lancaster, and its crew. This was the aircraft in which Andrew Mynarski earned his Victoria Cross for valour. He gave his life in so doing. The second story is that of FM213, its history, and the story of how it was acquired by Canadian Warplane Heritage Museum and how with dedication and the enthusiastic help of the Lancaster Support Club it has been restored to flying condition. It has been given the identity KB726 and dedicated in honour of P/O Andrew Mynarski, V.C., his crew and all Canadian flyers who sacrificed so much in the cause of peace more than 44 years ago. The story is related in three major parts: the Lancaster and Mark X bombers in general; the Canadian No. 6 Group and its squadrons, with special emphasis on the crew of KB726 VR.A of No.419 Squadron (Moose), who on that fateful night of 12/13 June 1944 survived to tell their story; and special documentation of the 9-year restoration program of Lancaster FM213 to its first flight, after 24 years in retirement - the only flying example of this aircraft on the North American continent." Previous owner's small address label at bottom of copyright page. Dust jacket has some light edge wrinkling - mainly at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, minor rubbing.
