Military and press photographers, propagandists, camera-wielding soldiers and civilians - all took the opportunity to record the tumultuous events of 1939-45. The scenes they captured of mass suffering and individual heroism, of atrocious cruelty and humanitarianism against the odds, of hate and comradeship, misery and hope, remain undiminished in t heir intensity and constitute a vital record of an extraordinary period. (This book) features 900 clearly captioned images selected from a wide variety of sources. Every major theatre of conflict is covered, from the icy seas of the Arctic C i r c l e to the jungles of the South Pacific, from the deserts of North Africa to the steppes of Russia. Throughout, proper historical grounding is given by an informative, indexed commentary summarizing the many complex events of the period. 3 Davis, Kenneth S. DWIGHT D. EISENHOWER: SOLDIER OF DEMOCRACY.
New York Konecky & Konecky 156852059X / 9781568520599 Reprint Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good+
566 pp, 9 1/2" H. Undated reprint of the 1945 edition, c1999. A volume in the "Leaders of Our Time" series. "On June 6, 1944, a decisive day in the history of the Western World, the radio had been blaring reports of the progress of American troops on the Normandy beachhead since long before dawn. The man whose portrait is examined in this book had reached the supreme moment of his career. This work is a first hand account of Dwight D. Eisenhower from his early years in Texas through his military service in World War II. It documents his training at West Point, his tour of duty in WWI and then his meteoric rise as war leader and stateman in World War II. Extensive interviews that the author conducted with Eisenhower in London in the days leading up to the Normandy invasion shed new light on the strategic thinking that lay behind the momentous plans that were then being formulated. They also provide an intimate look at Eisenhower the man and the deeply held sense of values that would see him through the war and then later inform his tenure as president of the United States." Minor browning at top edge of spine, very light wrinkling at bottom of spine. Dust jacket has very small dent on front hinge.

KNIGHT'S CROSS: A LIFE OF FIELD MARSHAL ERWIN ROMMEL., Fraser, David.
5 Fraser, David. KNIGHT'S CROSS: A LIFE OF FIELD MARSHAL ERWIN ROMMEL.
HarperCollins, New York, 1993, book club edition.
601 pp, large 8vo (9 1/2" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0060182229 B&w photographs, maps/battle plans. "(S)hows how inspiringly spontaneous and superficially haphazard Rommel's style of leadership could be: 'Rommel believed that war is a re ckless, untidy business, and that the habits of mind of a methodical manager are alien to what is required'. Instead, his hallmarks were boldness of manoeuvre, ferocity of attack, and tenacity in pursuit. These were the qualities he display e d i n h is great battles in the North African desert; they were, David Fraser demonstrates, evident from his earliest battles in the First World War to his last, defending Fortress Europe from the Allied invasion of 1944....Rommel reached a posi ti on in w h ic h he almost inevitably became embroiled in politics. When he realized that the Allied invasion was going to succeed, he realized also that the only way to save Germany was somehow to negotiate a peace settlement. He tried to pres ent Hi t ler - to wh om he had always been devoted, and who had always shown him a particular respect and affection - with the military realities: he was branded a defeatist and ignored. But his opinions, and his apparent links (meticulously dis cuss ed b y Fras er) wi th t he Stauffenberg plotters of July 1944 - one of them, under interrogation, mentioned Rommel as a possible head of post-Hilterian Gemany - condemned him is the eyes of the Fuhrer he had served so loyally. He was offered the c hoice o f tri al b y a Peopl e's Court - a sham of course - or suicide, a state funeral and protection for his family. He chose the latter. Rommel is not, to David Fraser, a flawless hero: his failings as well as his genius are recorded here . But he ha d t hat in stinc t fo r batt le and leadership which set him apart from his contemporaries and places him among the great commanders." "(Covers) the decade from 1928 to 1938, when Chiang Kai-shek rose to power and Mao Tsetung in his mountain fastness gathered the spent remnants of an almost destroyed communist army and rebuilt it as a force. 8 Laffin, John. RAIDERS: ELITE FORCES ATTACKS.
Chancellor, London, 2000, reprint.
194 pp, large 8vo (9 1/2" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0753703629 B&w photographs, reproductions. "During the Second World War a number of daring military actions were carried out by Allied and Axis land, sea and air forces against targets carefully selected for their strategic or propaganda values. These raids were as individual in character as the men who carried them out and equally unique in their objectives. (The author) relates more than twenty such operations mounted b y B r i t ish, German, American, Australian, Italian and Canadian forces. Raiding appealed to British military men's psyche - and on the whole, they were good at it. Therefore, 'Raiders' emphasizes attacks mounted by the British because they we re i n vo lv ed i n more theatres of war than any other combatant. (Laffin) examines the qualities of successful raiders, as well as their selection and training, before looking in detail at individual missions. The exploits recorded here range fro m a B rit ish co mma ndo strike against Rommel's supposed HQ in the North African desert in 1941, to the daring surveys of the Normandy beaches in preparation for Operation 'Overlord'; from the German glider-borne assault on the great Belgian fort ress of Ebe n Em ael in 1 940, to SS Colonel Otto Skorzeny's dramatic mission to snatch Mussolini from imprisonment on an Italian mountaintop in 1943. Here are the Gironde river exploit of the Special Boat Service in 1942 when frogmen comman dos c aused ser ious damag e to four large enemy ships, and Operation 'Jericho' in 1944 when a low-level attack by RAF Mosquito bombers blasted a huge hole in the wall of a Gestapo prison in France." 9 Leckie, Robert. DELIVERED FROM EVIL: THE SAGA OF WORLD WAR II.

998 pp, large 8vo (9 1/2" H). Map endpapers. B&w maps. "World War II eventually involved every major power in the world, and before it was over some fifty million people lost their lives. (This) is a complete political and military history of World War II. Written with the pace and sweep of a fine novel, it makes the period, its major leaders, and the events not only comprehensible but also alive and real. Robert Leckie begins his book with the punitive treaty of Versailles and the fumbling efforts of the Western democracies to cope with the rise of Mussolini and Hitler. He draws vivid profiles of the political leaders, generals, and admirals who created and fought the war; describes the battles; analyzes the military strategy; considers the economic and political factors; and tells of the daily lives of those who were engaged on the far-flung fronts and those who endured at home. Churchill, Stalin, Roosevelt, MacArthur, Tojo, Eisenhower, Montgomery, Rommel and many other fascinating individuals become live protagonists on the stage sets of such dramatic sites as Stalingrad, Tobruk, Guadalcanal, Dunkirk, Leningrad, Monte Cassino, Midway, Omaha Beach, and Iwo Jima. Readers of all ages will find Leckie's powerful, action-packed narrative both compelling and comprehensive, and they will gain fascinating insights into one of the greatest and most awful events in human history." Minor browning on top of text block, minor soiling on bottom of text block. Peterborough, Ontario Broadview Press 1991 0921149859 / 9780921149859 Hard Cover Good+ Good+
322 pp, large 8vo (9 1/4" H). "The stories in this collection, coming from the diplomats themselves, focus on all facets of twentieth century diplomatic life, but highlight the whimsical, the laughable, the dramatic and sometimes the tragic aspects of life as a diplomat. There are anecdotes concerning some of the great figures of the century - Churchill, Roosevelt, Stalin, Pearson, Nixon, Kissinger - and some of the not-so-great: unknown vice-consuls in South America, obscure third secretaries in the middle east. The book is organzied thematically; Martel focuses on such subjects as 'Dining with the Diplomats', 'Amateur Adventures', 'Sex and Other Diversions', 'Dressed to Deal', 'Diplomats at War' and 'Spies, Skulduggery and Other Sensations'. (Its) final section comprises a variety of first-hand accounts of one of the century's most dramatic diplomatic events: the Munich crisis of 1939. This is a book to amuse and to enlighten; it is must reading not only for diplomats, but for anyone with an interest in how relationships between nations so often depend upon relationships between people." 214 pp, large 8vo (9 1/4" H). B&w photographs. "The 1942 Siege of Malta was an incredible, against-the-odds triumph for England's Royal Air Force and a small band of Canadian flyers. (This book) describes the way Allied submarines and bombers operating from the tiny island effectively controlled shipping in the Mediterranean. In retaliation, Hitler and Mussolini decided to starve and bomb Malta out of the war. McCaffery vividly captures the tension of the devastating offensive, bringing to life all the key events of the battle from the March Blitz to the final Allied victory in October. The heroic exploits of air aces Buzz Beurling, Wally McLeod, Moose Fumerton, and John Williams are described in colourful detail. Vancouver University of British Columbia Press 1988 0774802995 / 9780774802994 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good-
185 pp, large 8vo (9 1/4" H). B&w photographs, maps. "The Mediterranean Sea in World War II was the scene of prolonged and violent naval warfare between the British and the Axis powers, Italy and Germany. The stories of the major squadrons and their admirals have been told, as their actions led directly to the outcomes. Here is the tale of the smallest surface ships, their officers and men who, at the very tip of British sea power in that disputed sea, played vital roles in making posible the successes of the more famous forces. It is told by one of them - a Canadian on loan to the Royal Navy - who took a leading part from the lowest ebb in British fortunes through the struggle against almost overwhelming odds to the climax of the first landings on the continent of Europe. The select 3rd Flotilla of Motor Launches - known as MLs in the United Kingdom and in Canada as 'Fairmiles' - was the first to go abroad from the British Isles and the only one sent into the eye of the storm as the larger ships were driven out. Stead recalls passages in disguise through hostile waters, successful fights with aircraft, the siege and blitz of Malta, major convoy battles, minesweeping in the forefront of the action, and the landings that drove Mussolini's Italy out of the war. He not only records specific contributions to the Allied cause unique for vessels of this type, but also gives a front-row view of the battle for the central Medi terranean." Light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, very light edge wear, previous owner's small label on free front endpaper. Dust jacket has light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, slight fading to colour on spine and at t op of front hinge.
