DEFENDERS OF PAKISTAN., Amin, Mohamed; Quraishy, Masud; Willetts, Duncan; Tetley, Brian.
1 Amin, Mohamed; Quraishy, Masud; Willetts, Duncan; Tetley, Brian. DEFENDERS OF PAKISTAN.
Midland Counties, (Leicester, 1988).
200 pp, 4to (12 3/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. Profusely illustrated with color photographs. "Few nations in history came into the world so empty-handed as Pakistan. Born at the stroke of midnight on 14 August 1947, it's bounded in the east by India, in the north by China and the Soviet Union and in the west by Afghanistan and in the south-west by Iran. More recently a simmering war - perhaps the most astonishing one of all - goes on at heights of more than 20,000 feet, in the great H imalayan and Karakoram mountain ranges of northern Pakistan. On its North-West Frontier, the Afghans of the Soviet puppet-regime in Kabul raid and harass Pakistan border posts and villages in the Hindu Kush and the mountains of the famous K h y b e r P a ss. They meet indomitable defence. Yet all it had at the start was courage - and the formidable legacy of the martial Muslims of Asia: pride, discipline, efficiency and unquenchable faith. Out of this came inspired performance. Th is i s th e f ul l, remarkable story of the bravest of the brave...the story of how a frail young nation, born amid tumult and bloodshed, threatened on all sides, transformed itself into a major fighting machine." Faint cigarette odor. Dust j ack et has m ino r ru bbi ng, light edge creasing along top edge, tiny tear and light wear at top of spine. VG+/VG

THE ILLUSTRATED ATLAS OF JERUSALEM., Bahat, Dan. With Chaim T. Rubinstein. Introduction by Eric Meyers. Translated by Shlomo Ketko.
2 Bahat, Dan. With Chaim T. Rubinstein. Introduction by Eric Meyers. Translated by Shlomo Ketko. THE ILLUSTRATED ATLAS OF JERUSALEM.
Simon and Schuster, New York, 1990.
152 pp, 4to (11 3/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0134516427 "Lavishly illustrated with more than 400 color illustrations, the Atlas looks at the history of Jerusalem with maps, drawings, and isometric reconstructions, all updated with the latest archaeological evidence. Jerusalem is perhaps the most interesting city on earth. Sacred to Jews, Christians, and Muslims alike, it dates back to at least the third millenium BCE. David made it his capital; Solomon glorified it with his Te mple; it fell to Babylonia in 586 BCE and was rebuilt by Ezra and Nehemiah; it was the city of the Maccabees and of the Herods, and the place where Jesus was tried and crucified. Titus razed its buildings and destroyed the Temple in 70 CE. A f t e r t he revolt of Bar Kochba, the Romans made Jerusalem a pagan shrine. Jerusalem fell to the Crusaders in 1099; in 1187, Muslims, led by Saladin, captured the city and held it almost continuously until the British took control after World Wa r I. Th e B ritish Mandate ended in 1948 when the State of Israel was born. In 1967, Israel reunited the city. Special features in the Atlas include: concise, easy-to-read text; four-color illustrations, maps, drawings, and photos throughout ; de fi nit i ve an d a uthoritative information; selected bibliography of further readings; thorough index; an up-to-date approach, based on the latest findings. For anyone interested in biblical archaeology; geography; Jewish studies, culture, an d his tor y; a nd th e h isto ry and culture of the Middle East, (this book) is certain to be an invaluable resource." 3 Buruma, Ian. Signed. MURDER IN AMSTERDAM. THE DEATH OF THEO VAN GOGH AND THE LIMITS OF TOLERANCE.
Penguin, New York, 2006, first edition (remainder mark).
278 pp, 8vo (8 1/2" H), hard cover in dust jacket. SIGNED BY AUTHOR ON HALF TITLE PAGE. ISBN 1594201080 "It was the emblematic crime of our moment: On a cold November day in Amsterdam, an angry young Muslim man, Mohammed Bouyeri, the son of Moroc can immigrants, shot and killed the celebrated and controversial Dutch filmmaker Theo van Gogh, great-grandnephew of Vincent and iconic European provocateur, for making a movie with the Dutch politician Ayaan Hirsi Ali that 'insulted the prophet Mo h ammed'. After Bouyeri shot Van Gogh, he calmly stood over the body and cut his throat with a curved machete, as if performing a ritual sacrifice, which in a very real sense he was. The murder horrified quiet, complacent, prosperous Holland, a co un try that prides itself on being a bastion of tolerance, and sent shock waves across Europe and around the world. Shortly thereafter, Ian Buruma returned to the country of his childhood to investigate the event and its larger meaning. The result is his masterpiece: a book with the intimacy and narrative brilliance for which Buruma is renowned. (His) entire life's work has led him to this story - the tale of what happens when political Islam collides with the secular West, and tolerance f inds its limits." 395 pp, 9 1/2" H. B&w illustrations. "(T)ells the story of a journey in the strange world of alleged apparitions, prophecies, miracles of healing, levitation, holy relics, weeping statues, stigmata and demonic possession. Cornwell follows the trail through Yugoslavia, Ireland, Spain, the United States, Canada, Italy and Britain, in search of proof of divine, or diabolical, intervention. He encounters the teenage Marian visionaries of Medjugorje, Sister Briege McKenna, the healing nun, and the ghostly influence of the stigmatic Padre Pio. He investigates the Shroud of Turin, the liquefaction of the blood of St Januarius in Naples, a Eucharistic miracle in the Bronx and a weeping plaque of the Virgin in Sicily. He describes a curious and sometimes sinister landscape inhabited by prophets, saints, charismatic political leaders and exorcists, and finds himself in conversation with Graham Greene, Professor A.J. Ayer and the distinguished Jesuit philosopher Father Frederick Copleston. Cornwell's journey culminates in an imaginative and original perspective that demonstrates the moral and spiritual benefits of popular mystical phenomena, while redeeming them from scientific debunking and fundamentalist literalism." 7 Koestler, Arthur. THE THIRTEENTH TRIBE: THE KHAZAR EMPIRE AND ITS HERITAGE.
New York Random House 1976 0394402847 / 9780394402840 Reprint Hard Cover Good Good
255 pp, 8vo (8 7/16" H). B&w map. "(T)races the history of the ancient Khazar Empire, a major but almost forgotten power in Eastern Europe, which in the Dark Ages became converted to Judaism. Khazaria was finally wiped out by the forces of Genghis Khan, but evidence indicates that the Khazars themselves migrated to Poland and formed the cradle of Western Jewry. The Khazars' sway extended from the Black Sea to the Caspian, from the Caucasus to the Volga, and they were instrumental in stopping the Muslim onslaught against Byzantium, the eastern jaw of the gigantic pincer movement that in the West swept across northern Africa and into Spain. Thereafter (they) found themselves in a precarious position between two major world powers: the Eastern Roman Empire in Byzantium and the triumphant followers of Mohammed. (R)esisting both the Western pressure to become Christian and the Eastern to adopt Islam, (they rejected both and) converted to Judaism. In the second part of this book, 'The Heritage', Mr. Koestler speculates about the ultimate faith of the Khazars and their impact on the racial composition and social heritage of modern Jewry. He produces a large body of meticulously detailed research in support of a theory that sounds all the more convincing for the restraint with which it is advanced. Yet should this theory be confirmed, the term 'anti-Semitism' would become void of meaning, since, as (he) writes, it is based 'on a misapprehension shared by both the killers and the victims. The story of the Khazar Empire, as it slowly emerges from the past, begins to look like the most cruel hoax which history has ever perpetrated'." 239 pp, 8" H. "In the 1960s, Margaret Laurence set out for Somaliland in Africa with her engineer husband in the hope that friendliness and a liberal outlook would suffice to bridge the differences between East and West. But she soon began to discover the complexity and difficulty in any attempted communication between peoples of widely different cultures, religions, and ways of looking at life. Living out in camp, the author gradually came to know something of the life of the nomadic camel-herding Somalis, and to have a deep regard for these desert people who must struggle incessantly for survival in their barren land, but who manage also to produce many skilled orators, poets, and storytellers. Of all this, Mrs. Laurence writes delightfully; with humour, keen observation and humanity, with vivid descriptions of the country and the Somalis she met." 396 pp, 9 1/2" H. Maps. "(D)escribes the violent transformations that occurred in Salonica and hundreds of other towns and cities as the Ottoman, Russian, Austro-Hungarian, and German empires collapsed, to be reborn as the modern nation-states we know today. Lieberman's book is the first comprehensive history of this process that has involved the murder and forced migration of tens of millions of people. Drawing on eyewitness accounts, contemporary journalism, and diplomatic records, (his) story sweeps across the continent, taking the reader from ethnic cleansing's earliest beginnings in Bulgaria, Greece, and Russia in the nineteenth century, through the rise of nationalism, both world wars, the Armenian genocide, the Holocaust, and the rise and fall of the Soviet empire, to the breakup of Yugoslavia in the 1990s. Along the way he examines the decisive roles of political leaders - not only monarchs and dictators but also those who were democratically elected - as well as ordinary people who often required very little encouragement to rob and brutalize their neighbors, or who were simply caught up in the tide of history." 339 pp, 8vo (8 3/8" H). B&w illustrations. "Have you ever wondered why so many heroes - from Odysseus to Tom Sawyer - journey to the underworld? Or why virgin births occur in so many stories around the world? In this first comprehensive view of mythology directed toward the general reader, Shirley Park Lowry tells why we find recurring patterns and symbols in stories that are centuries - and continents - apart. Drawing upon tales ranging from the ancient Middle East to modern North America, Lowry shows how 'myths reflect and dramatize ordinary experience, illuminating our deepest and least articulated hopes, fears, and quandries. Their extravagant plots and images are recognizable because they are the language of our own dreams.' Lowry defines what myths are; why they are important; what they share with folk tales, dreams and fantasies; how we developed a symbolic language and what such symbols as blood, milk, sunlight, and monsters mean; how heroes from Moses and Jesus to Charlemagne and Superman relate to one another; and how myths reconcile us to life's limitations." 345 pp, large 8vo (9 1/4" H). Map endpapers, b&w photographs, maps. "Brave, tough, resourceful, and, rarest of all, blessed with an irreverent sense of humour, (Major-General Lewis) MacKenzie needed all those qualities for the biggest assignment of his military career: striving for peace among the warring factions in the former Yugoslavia. In this riveting memoir, MacKenzie describes how he created Sector Sarajevo, and with a 30-nation UN force set out to liberate the airport to receive desperately needed food and medical supplies. MacKenzie's outstanding and unorthodox leadership catapulted him to the status of an international celebrity, as he used the media - 'the only weapon I had' - to maximum advantage. Against the daily drama of shelling, sabotage, murder and shameless propaganda, motivated by ethnic hatreds, MacKenzie's adventures in Sarajevo read like a war novel - except that it is all tragically true. With the verve of a natural storyteller, (he) also recounts the often bizarre highlights of eight previous peacekeeping tours in the Middle East, Cyprus and Vietnam. From bluffing his way through the Turkish-Cypriot lines to boisterous forays into Saigon's netherworld; from basketball in the Gaza Strip to dodging sniper fire in Sarajevo; from daring diplomatic improvisations to bluntly outspoken criticisms of the UN bureaucracy: here is a veteran peackeeper's frank, funny and unforgettable story." 582 pp, large 8vo (9 7/16" H). Map endpapers, B&w photographs, reproductions, maps. "From the time of Clive to the violent days of Partition in 1947, British power in India was dependent upon the Indian Army. Only once was the link between the British officers and the Indian soldiers broken - at the brutal explosion of the Indian Mutiny in 1857; but even that apparently fatal rift was healed. (This book) examines the relationship between the Indian soldiers and their officers: what made them endure hardship, risk wounding and sometimes go to a certain death; their sense of duty and service, loyalty to the regiment and to the distant Crown. Dwelling sometimes on a campaign, sometimes on an episode in the course of a battle, sometimes on the story of one regiment or one man, Philip Mason tells the eventful and often dramatic story of the Indian Army. What emerges is a picture of an institution whose strength rested finally on a concept of personal honour." THE WAR IN THE YEMEN., O'Ballance, Edgard.

Archon, Hamden, Connecticut, 1971, first edition.
218 pp, 8vo (8 3/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0208010386 "....a remarkable account of a bitter war fought in almost medieval conditions in a little-known country. It is also, inevitably, the story of a country forced by the necessities of its own warfare to advance with reckless speed into the twentieth century. Major O'Ballance is the best qualified historian, both from his long familiarity with the Middle East, and from his books on modern warfare and guerrilla fighting which h ave gained him such a wide reputation, to write this account - the only comprehensive one to date - of the Yemen War. He begins with the Yemen in 1948, a land as impenetrable as Tibet to the Western world, where the tyrannical Imam Yahya r e c e i v e d c omplaints from his people on little bits on paper and decorated the wall of his capital with the heads of argumentative subjects; and he ends twenty years later with a Republican government in the same capital, using foreign aid to bu il d ro ad s an d h ospitals, and keeping a precarious status quo with the help of tanks and aeroplanes. In between, we are given a fascinating and almost classic description of the meeting and struggle of two worlds: the world of the Imams who ke pt pe ace by t aki ng ho stages from each of the warring tribes and regarded motor cars with considerable distrust; and the world of the young officers trained abroad who found good military reasons for quoting Khrushchev, Nasser and Mao Tse- Tung in th eir succ ess ful eff orts to unseat a dynasty of kings. And the continuous self-seeking participation of Nasser and Faisal in this conflict, as Major O'Ballance is at pains to stress, highlights more cogently than ever the intricate w eb of sus pici ons and p reju dice s in whic h the nations of the Middle East find themselves struggling to coexist." Of this pilgrimage, the Friar's account is, among all others, the fullest and liveliest. He kept a diary of the dreary trudge across the desert, using such commendable care and accuracy that the route of the pilgrimage can be traced by the modern traveller who knows the ground. At the Monastery of Saint Katherine, his patron Saint, he enjoyed to the full the various opportunities for strenuous climbing and for devotion. Another desert journey brought him and his companions to Cairo, one of the two capitals of the Moslem world, magnificent and squalid, swarming with strange and fascinating life and containing also monuments of a past so ancient that it was all a mystery to the beholders. From Egypt the pilgrims sail home in the great cargo galleys of the Venetians, laden with spices from the autumn market at Alexandria, and the Friar reports the discomforts, enjoyments and humours of a stormy winter voyage among the islands of the Aegean and Adriatic. At Venice, leaving the company of the pilgrims, he came even more closely in touch with the commerical world of the fifteenth century as a guest of the German merchants in their Fondaco at the foot of the Rialto bridge. It was in the company of these same merchants, returning across the frozen Alpine roads with their purchases of spices and Murano glass, that Felix Fabri came back at last to Ulm and to the dear friends in the Dominican House in the angle of the city wall. His account of that joyful homecoming, in itself a rarity in pilgrim literature, brings to a perfect close his long, rich book, full of curious information and humorous and delightful anecdote, which has been so superbly quarried and interpreted by Miss H.F.M. Prescott." Very light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, small bump at corners of front board, very light browning to edges of text block - a few tiny foxing marks on top, minor edge wear. Believing the plot to be Serbian state initiated, the Habsburg empire unleashed its fury - leading directly to the outbreak of the First World War. The group of young, poor Bosnian students behind the murder could not have foreseen its consequences. They set out to make a stand against oppression, and avenge their beloved Serbia, but ended up shaping the course of the twentieth century. Using new and original source material, (the author) brilliantly reinvestigates and reconstructs the events which subsequently defined our modern history." Interior - clean and tight with no previous ownership marks. Exterior - a few light creases down spine, very minor edge wear.

"This is the tale of the last two years of British rule in India (1946-47), told by one who watche d events from the Headquarters of Eastern Command. My story will show how Indian affairs were when the (Second World War) was over: the rapid deterioration of the adminstration as the small British cadre of civil officials was hurriedly replaced by Indian, and as independence became more and more certain; in particular the lawlessness which so quickly set in: the almost insupportable burden that was placed upon and successfully borne by the Indian Army and its few British officers, and how gr e at was the debt that India, the Commonwealth and indeed the world owed to the devotion of these officers, their skill, patience and staunchness: that we had no honourable alternative but to quit India: and, lastly, why, unless Russia first collaps es , India - Hindustan, if you will - is in grave danger of becoming communist in the not distant future. Of necessity the tale starts with a description of Eastern Command and its peoples. A more detailed description of Hinduism I have relagated to Appendix I. Without some knowledge of that system it is impossible either to understand the political and communal affairs of which the book speaks or to be aware of the bearing of Hinduism upon the past and, above all, the future of India." Ciga ret te odor inside, light browning to endpapers, foxing mark on title page and dedication page, light browning to edges of textblock - tiny foxing marks on top of textblock, a few faint areas of discoloration on boards, slight fading to spine colour , ve ry light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine.
