128 pp, oblong large 8vo (9 1/2" H x 10 3/4" D). Decorated endpapers, profusely illustrated in color and b&w with photographs, reproductions. "Nothing captures the spirit of the Old West better than the jaunty tunes and classic ballads the cowboys and settlers sang, songs richly represented in this visually stunning volume. Panoramic in scope, the 45 songs, coupled with works of art from The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, and the Buffalo Bill Historical Center, Cody, Wyoming, chronicle the stirring saga of westward expansion and reflect every facet of life during one of the most exciting periods in our nation's history. The lore of the West intrigued many artists, and the works featured include paintings and sculpture by Frederic Remington, Charles M. Russell, and N.C. Wyeth, as well as a myriad of fascinating artifacts: saddles, spurs, guns, guitars, a stagecoach ticket, a Navajo blanket, and other objects that provide a vivid picture of life in the West. A lively and intriguing text further illuminates this bygone world, exploring the history of the songs, their lyrics, the accompanying art, and the development of the West. The music, arranged for beginning to intermediate musicians and accompanied by chords for the guitar or banjo, is suitable for piano, organ, violin, or recorder." BABAYAGA., Barlow, Toby.
5 Barlow, Toby. BABAYAGA.
New York Farrar, Straus & Giroux 2013 0374107874 / 9780374107871 First Edition Hard Cover Fine Very Good+ Dust jacket art by Matt Buck.
383 pp, 8vo (8 1/2" H). "Paris, 1959" The City of Light is the center of the universe. Expats flock to exercise their loftiest ambitions and most libertine fantasies, and maybe dabble in a bit of Cold War spycraft along the way. Refugees from the East - a few babayagas among them - arrive to start their lives anew. The world's greatest city is as cosmopolitan and alive as it's ever been. Will is just another young American seeking his fortune in Paris - except that the ad agency that employs him is a front for the CIA. He's been in the city a few years now and is beginning to sense that his time is up - and he still hasn't figured out Parisian girls. Zoya is a beautiful young woman wandering 'les boulevards', sad-eyed, coming off a bad breakup. In fact, she impaled her ex on a spike. Zoya, it turns out, has been a beautiful young woman for hundreds of years; she and her far more traditionally witchy companion, Elga, have been thriving unnoticed amid the bloody froth of Europe's wars. Inspector Vidot is a hardworking Paris police detective who cherishes quiet nights at home. But when he follows a lead from a grisly murder to the warren of a frightened old woman, he undergoes a radical transformation. Oliver is a patrician, fun-loving American who has come to Paris to start a literary journal with the help of some friends, who ask only a few discreet favors in return. When a few of his dodgier acquaintances start dropping dead, he realizes he's in well over his head, though he remains fairly confident that it's nothing a well-made cocktail can't fix. A few chance encounters, a bit of romantic chemistry, a chorus of angry ghosts, a strung-out jazzman or three, a weaponized LSD program, and a cache of rifles buried in the catacombs - those are approximately half the ingredients of 'Babayaga'. But then there's something even more unexpected that Toby Barlow has smuggled in, too: a daring, moving exploration of love and morality." Dust jacket has soft wrinkle at bottom of rear hinge, small blank label across barcode.

98 pp, 8 3/16" H. "The oral tradition of Kentucky is one of the most interesting in the nation and has attracted a number of outstanding men and women - scholars and writers, teachers and singers - who have devoted their energies to Kentucky's folk and their ways. Some have collected examples of the state's unique speech patterns and word usages. Others have recorded local place names and the legends that surround them, or the yarns and tall tales transmitted from one generation to the next. Musicians have sought the authentic mountain folksongs, both old and new, and gifted writers have woven details of their Kentucky upbringing into poems, novels, and stories. Here is described the work of these enthusiastic students." Frosted Earth, (Coulsdon, Surrey, 1995).
164 pp, small 4to (10 1/8" H), soft cover. Profusely illustrated with vintage b&w photos. "Surrey saw some spectacular sights as the Swinging Sixties gave way to the Seventies. Some town centres changed beyond recognition as demolition workers ma de way for the new, and on the streets, out came some strange new fashions - hot pants, loons, flared trousers, ponchos and plafform shoes. As youngsters danced to the Bay City Rollers, Slade and Gary Glitter, local cinemas were emptying a n d c l o s i n g down. The Seventies was also a decade of protests, strikes and other forms of industrial unrest, culminating in the 'Winter of Discontent' in 1978-9. The following pages look again at the Seventies in Surrey and recapture tho s e ti me s o f ha pp in es s and sorrow, Ford Capris, Austin Allegros and Morris Marinas." 464 pp, 9 1/2" H. "Quicksilver is part romance, part psychologicl thriller. Richly evocative and subtly erotic, it gives a fascinating insight into the myth of the werewolf. Raised in exile as an English gentleman trying to forget a tragic past, Ned Malise wanted only to be left alone with his music, his rich daydreams and his love for Marika. But at the age of thirty-three, he suddenly began to turn into a wolf. Or so it seemed in 1638, when werewolves were still tried and hanged like witches. On the run from hunters with dogs, Ned takes refuge with the woman he has loved from a distance all his life, who must herself in turn make a terrifying decision. Then Ned finds that rescue can be even more horrifying than execution. Set in England and Holland, in a world where medieval superstition still warred with the emerging experimental sciences of the Age of Reason, (it) moves from court intrigue to back-street quacks, from the healing power of music to the deadly hunger of intellectual ambition. From the horror of Ned's first unravelling by his Wolf, by way of one of the strangest yet most satisfying love stories seen outside myth, it propels the reader to an astonishing but exhilarating end - (and) stretches our understanding of the beast that lurks in man." Dust jacket has very light edge wrinkling.

OPERATION ELVIS., Levy, Alan. Illustrated by Dedini.
17 Levy, Alan. Illustrated by Dedini. OPERATION ELVIS.
Henry Holt, New York, 1960, 3rd printing.
117 pp, 8vo (8 1/2" H), hard cover in dust jacket. B&w cartoons. "A book as outrageously comic as the phenomenon it explores, 'Operation Elvis' offers a trenchant view of a modern cultural diaster: the mass hysteria that all but thwarted the trans formation of a million-dollar idol into an $83.20-a-month GI. On March 24, 1958, the United State Army undertook a mission as hazardous as Valley Forge, as complex as a D-Day invasion. The objective: to convert a controversial millionaire ( n o m e n c l ature: Elvis 'The Pelvis' Presley) into an army private and treat him 'just like everyone else'. Operation Elvis was staged before a grandstand many times larger than all the auditoriums Elvis Presley had ever filled. Tennagers twi tc he d, v et er an s and servicemen raised apprehensive eyes, and reporters raced for seats on the nearest aisle. Soon the dignitaries began to arrive. Chamber of Commerce groups, senators, and congressmen crowded toward the center of the stage, al l o f t hem of fer ing a dvice. The cast was swelled by Frauleins on both sides of the Elbe, by Russians, and by the State Department brass. The Army, scanning the terrain, discovered itself in a state of siege. By hewing to its original ba ttle lin e, i t ha d qu ickl y be en outflanked. Are the Selective Service and Celebrity systems truly compatible? Is the Mother of Democracy sturdy enough to support the unlikely marriage of the two? What did the active service duty of US533107 61 re veal about our Army? Abo ut ou r h ero? About ourselves? These are just a few of the questions raised in this wry and amusing book." Ligth wear at top/bottom of spine and at bottom rear corner. Broke, suffering from severe substance abuse, and unmanageable - he has been spit out by the industry that used him up by the age of 26. From the close vantage point of being just 28, but significantly on the road to resurrecting his career, MacIsaac tells his story with his notorious black humour and equally notorious honesty. 19 Marsden, Christopher. Preface by Sacheverell Sitwell. PALMYRA OF THE NORTH: THE FIRST DAYS OF ST. PETERSBURG.
Faber and Faber, London, 1943, 2nd impression.
280 pp, 8vo (8 13/16" H), hard cover in dust jacket. B&w plates. "Early in the eighteenth century Russia, like Japan, in the nineteenth, suddenly decided to adopt Western ideas and to extract herself from the slough of darkness and mediaevalism in which for many centuries she had been plunged. This wrench, carried out with that magnitude and ruthless, exaggerated completeness which has characterized all Russian revolutions, was inaugurated by the titanic Peter the Great - who buil t a n e w c a pital, St. Petersburg (now Leningrad) for the purpose - and brought to fulfillment by his successors, that series of flamboyant and high-spirited Empresses. Among them Peter's daughter, Elizabeth Petrovna, was the most frivolous, c er t ai n ly t he be st -looking and certainly the least known today. Mr. Marsden's fascinating book brings the St. Petersburg of Elizabeth's time vividly before us. It was mainly from France and Italy that she and the other Russian autocrats of th e eig ht een th cen t ury dr ew the fashionable painters, architects, actors, musicians and others who designed the glittering 'mise en scene' against which the changing tableaux of this budding Versailles were posed. But in spite of the stupe ndou s roco co pala ces , th e feve rish display and extravagance, the often highly artistic gaiety (the beginnings and gradual development of the Russian ballet are among the subjects of the book), there was always an element of comedy in the hast y ama lg amati on of Fr ench eleg an ce an d bas ic Muscovite rudeness. This history of sixty years of Russian court life contains many amusing tales and scandalous anecdotes as well as a sober and detailed account of the creation - from literally nothi ng but ba rre n wast es - of a c api tal an d cour t whose grandeur by the time of Catherine the Great had become second to none." 430 pp, large 8vo (9 1/4" H). B&w and colour photographs. "(A)n account of the life and cultural contribution of one of Canada's most talented conductors. Born in 1924, he made his Toronto Symphony conducting debut at the age of eighteen. He went on to become the artistic director of the Winnipeg Symphony, a conductor with the Toronto Symphony, and a guest conductor of virtually every major symphony orchestra in Canada. Feldbrill was also the first conductor-in-residence at the University of Toronto's Faculty of Music, from 1968 to 1982. However, what really set Feldbrill apart was his limitless enthusiasm and support of Canadian music and young musicians, as well as his insistence on playing the music of Canadian composers despite the reluctance of some orchestral managers and the initial opposition of audiences at the time. In doing so he reached out to young people and trained many to take their places as members of Canadian orchestras from coast to coast." Dust jacket has very minor edge wrinkling, minor rubbing.
