1 Batten, Jack. THE CLASS OF '75.
Toronto Macmillan Canada 1992 0771591780 / 9780771591785 First Edition Hard Cover Near Fine Very Good+
270 pp, 9 1/4" H. "September 1972. University of Toronto Law School. 150 students They came from across Canada - rich kids, middle class kids, and students who worked at night and on weekends to pay their fees. For some, law school was a stepping stone in a carefully thought-out career plan; others were there because they thought they'd give law school a whirl. Twenty percent of the group were women, a peak ratio at the time. They studied together for three years, working hard, being challenged by their teachers, by new ideas, and by each other. Each found a way through the maze of courses, cases, debates and exams. Then they fanned out across the country to careers as diverse as their beginnings. 1991. Judges, corporate lawyers, sole practitioners, tax specialists, labour lawyers, criminal lawyers, parliamentarians - . Jack Batten has found twenty-seven members of the class that graduated in 1975 and interviewed them at length to find out what they've been up to since." Book is clean. Dust jacket has very light edge wear/wrinkling, minor rubbing.

2 Betcherman, Lita-Rose. THE LITTLE BAND: THE CLASHES BETWEEN THE COMMUNISTS AND THE POLITICAL AND LEGAL ESTABLISHMENT IN CANADA, 1928-1932.
Ottawa Deneau 0888790716 / 9780888790712 First Printing Hard Cover Very Good Very Good
247 pp, 9 1/4" H. "In 1921, a 'little band' of disparate activists formed the Communist Party of Canada. Civil authorities across the country reacted with fear, even though R.C.M.P. officers described the party as 'a handful of ineffective English-speaking leaders, a negligible French-speaking element, an isolated Jewish element, with the agitators drawn from the Finnish and Ukrainian immigrants, whose benevolent societies paid for the Party's maintenance'. (This book) documents the ensuing clashes between the Canadian communists and Canada's political and legal establishments, from 1928 to 1932. Dr. Betcherman skillfully recreates the excitement of street fights and court cases, culminating in the spectacular trial of communist Tim Buck. (She) interviewed Communist Party members, Crown attorneys and Defence lawyers of the period, and was granted access to rare transcripts of trials, appeals and correspondence in compiling this, the first detailed and thoroughly entertaining history of these events." Light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, three very small corner bumps. Dust hacket has very light edge wear and wrinkling - mainly at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, tiny dent on rear hinge, tiny scuffs on rear flap-fold.

A FOLK TALE JOURNEY THROUGH THE MARITIMES., Creighton, Helen. Edited with an introduction by Michael Taft and Ronald Caplan.
4 Creighton, Helen. Edited with an introduction by Michael Taft and Ronald Caplan. A FOLK TALE JOURNEY THROUGH THE MARITIMES.
Wreck Cove, Cape Breton Island Breton Books 1993 1895415284 / 9781895415285 Soft Cover Very Good
249 pp, 9" H. B&w photographs. "These are the folk tales from Dr. Helen Creighton's life journey through the Maritime Provinces, collecting songs and ghost stories and old cures - and folk tales. Helen serves as our guide, introducing us to storytellers, setting the scene of the telling - and then she lets the person tell it as they told it to her. The feel of the kitchen and the fish shed still cling to these stories. Some are long, really miraculous folk tales - miraculous in detail and in that they managed to survive. Others are the brief riddle or the tantalizing quick-telling that a folklorist can expect along the way. Helen kept it all. And read as a whole, the reality and intensity of those smaller pieces reveals their value in among the more finished, well-told tales. (This) is a Maritime treasure." Interior - crease at bottom corner of page leaf 89/90, otherwise clean and tight with no other ownership marks. Exterior - slight bump at top of spine, minor rubbing, minor soft crease at top corner of rear cover.

The story of the life and career of Dr. Thor reveals much of the drive, tenacity and dynamism that animated this remarkable man; but for each of us whose life has been touched in some special way by him (this book) will bring to mind many personal recollections of the force of this personality'." 6 Davis, Kenneth S. DWIGHT D. EISENHOWER: SOLDIER OF DEMOCRACY.
New York Konecky & Konecky 156852059X / 9781568520599 Reprint Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good+
566 pp, 9 1/2" H. Undated reprint of the 1945 edition, c1999. A volume in the "Leaders of Our Time" series. "On June 6, 1944, a decisive day in the history of the Western World, the radio had been blaring reports of the progress of American troops on the Normandy beachhead since long before dawn. The man whose portrait is examined in this book had reached the supreme moment of his career. This work is a first hand account of Dwight D. Eisenhower from his early years in Texas through his military service in World War II. It documents his training at West Point, his tour of duty in WWI and then his meteoric rise as war leader and stateman in World War II. Extensive interviews that the author conducted with Eisenhower in London in the days leading up to the Normandy invasion shed new light on the strategic thinking that lay behind the momentous plans that were then being formulated. They also provide an intimate look at Eisenhower the man and the deeply held sense of values that would see him through the war and then later inform his tenure as president of the United States." Minor browning at top edge of spine, very light wrinkling at bottom of spine. Dust jacket has very small dent on front hinge.

BODYSNATCHERS: A HISTORY OF THE RESURRECTIONISTS 1742-1832., Fido, Martin.
10 Fido, Martin. BODYSNATCHERS: A HISTORY OF THE RESURRECTIONISTS 1742-1832.
Weidenfeld and Nicolson, London, 1988.
184 pp, 8vo (8 3/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0297793934 B&w illustrations. "From 1740 to 1832, freshly buried corpses were dug up and surreptitiously hawked to surgeons and anatomists in London and Edinburgh to dissect for research and teaching purposes. The resurrection trade brought together Fellows of the Royal Society and slum-dwelling criminals in an unholy alliance. By the beginning of the nineteenth century, the illicit trade had become one of London's most effic i e n t l y o rganized departments of crime, with gang-leader Ben Crouch securing a virtual monopoly of delivery to half the teaching hospitals. In Scotland, several surgeons of great eminence loved the adventure of association with desperadoes and w il li ng ly a c co mpanied them on their nocturnal excavations. Not surprisingly, there was great public consternation about the activities of the bodysnatchers, but it was only when Burke and Hare introduced murder as a means of acquiring 'sub jec ts' th at the au th ori ties acted to eradicate the ghoulish practice. Martin Fido's book is an enthralling study of a strange byway of criminal low life. It provides the first full and accurate accounts of murderers Helen Torrence and Jean Wald ie, Bish op and Head an d El iza Ross. With sketches of the great surgeons who encouraged and sought to control the trade, 'Bodysnatchers' will interest many in the medical profession and social historians as well as devotees of the true crim e gen re." 12 Gagnon, Georgette and Rath, Dan. NOT WITHOUT CAUSE: DAVID PETERSON'S FALL FROM GRACE.
Toronto HarperCollins 1991 0002158426 / 9780002158428 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good+
408 pp, 9 1/2" H. B&w photographs. "The stunning defeat of David Peterson's powerful Liberal government on September 6, 1990 broke many of the old rules for Canadian elections - and provided the first glimpse of how future elections will be fought. At the center of the story: Liberal leader David Peterson. Young, handsome and rich, he embodied the glory years of the 1980s when Yuppies, BMWs and image politics ruled. His decision to 'go early', to call an election only three years into his mandate, set the wheels in motion. His campaign attracts some of Canada's leading political players: campaign chair Kathy Robinson, whose pivotal position becomes a hotseat as the Liberal slide begins; former Trudeau pollster Martin Goldfarb, anxious to keep a Liberal government in power; David MacNaughton, Goldfarb critic and rival; Bob Nixon, the tough and respected treasurer faced with scuttling his balanced budget in a last-ditch vote-buying attempt; aide Vince Borg, Peterson's long-time friend, who tries to protect the premier from protesters and Liberals alike. These key players and an army of policy experts, strategists, party members, candidates and reporters tangle and clash in the race for power. (The) gripping account of how the Peterson Liberals did not anticipate or prepare for the new trends emerging in Canada's electoral process: the increasing power of special-interest groups, campaign strategies that attack incumbents without offering alternatives, negative advertising, the critical importance of perceptions and the media, an electorate with declining party allegiances and the rise of non-traditional parties. It's also the reavealing tale of how Ontario's New Democratic and Progressive Conservative parties ran campaigns that became a perfect match for the volatile mood of voters." Remainder mark on bottom of text block at spine. Dust jacket has very minor wrinkling at top of spine.

Scarborough, Ontario Prentice-Hall 1988 0132356236 / 9780132356237 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good+
356 pp, 9 1/4" H. B&w photographs. "When the Edmonton Oilers won their first Stanley Cup in 1984, Albertans rejoiced. They had waited 91 years for just this moment. When they won it again in 1985, a new era in hockey was born: The Edmonton Era. Just six years after being incorporated into the National Hockey League, the Oilers had won back-to-back Stanley Cups and rewritten half the record book. In these few years they had grown from a cocky, immature team into a championship team with character and charisma. Kevin Lowe describes all of this and more. In particular, he talks about his teammates - the magnificent Mark Messier, the Flying Finns, the unbeatable Grant Fuhr, Boy Wonder Wayne Gretzky and, of course, the controversial Glen Sather. (This) is the complete, dynamic chronicle of the team that Gretzky helped to propel to greatness, told from the point of view of (his) roommate and teammate Kevin Lowe." A HISTORY OF FORT WILLIAM AND PORT ARTHUR NEWSPAPERS FROM 1875., Macgillivray, George G. Foreword by R.A. Barford.
16 Macgillivray, George G. Foreword by R.A. Barford. A HISTORY OF FORT WILLIAM AND PORT ARTHUR NEWSPAPERS FROM 1875.
Fort William, Ontario Self-published 1968 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good+ Good+
101 pp, 11 1/4" H. B&w photographs, reproductions. "It is a truism that wherever and whenever men formed settlements on this continent a newspaper of some kind would soon be born. This is that kind of story for the Twin Cities in Thunder Bay District at the head of Lake Superior. They represent, because of their isolated position in the centre of Canada, not only a typical but almost a classic situation. With no major Canadian market closer than 425 miles in one direction and 1,000 miles in the other, with no airlines or even roads to such markets and with one rail line in its infancy, newspapers in these two pioneer communities existed for many years in a relatively uncomplicated milieu. Commencing in 1875, more than 30 newspapers have been published in Fort William and Port Arthur. They have run all the way from small handwritten newspapers to the large size, well-printed and comprehensive newspapers of our time. Even though today's newspapers differ mightily in appearance and coverage of news from the old-time weeklies, one similarity has persisted through the years - genuine interest in and loyalty to their communities." From the Foreword. very light browning to edges of text block. Dust jacket has very light browning on spine and flap-folds, light edge wear/wrinkling, light rubbing, light soiling on rear panel, small stain on front panel, several edge tears with old tape repair on inside.

LETTERS OF MARSHALL MCLUHAN., Molinaro, Matie; McLuhan, Corinne; Toye, William - Editors. (Marshall McLuhan)
19 Molinaro, Matie; McLuhan, Corinne; Toye, William - Editors. (Marshall McLuhan) LETTERS OF MARSHALL MCLUHAN.
Toronto Oxford University Press 1987 0195405943 / 9780195405941 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good+
562 pp, large 8vo (9 1/2" H). B&w photographs. "Marshall McLuahn (1911-1980) became one of the most famous men of the sixties and seventies and the involuntary founder of an unofficial cult. His reputation as a communications theorist was established by two of many books. 'The Gutenberg Galaxy: The Making of Typographic Man' (1962) explains how society and human psychology were changed when pre-literate oral culture was supplanted with the invention of the phonetic alphabet and a manuscript culture gave way to the Gutenberg era of movable type, the printing press, and mass-produced books. 'Understanding Media: The Extensions of Man' (1964), McLuhan's most widely read book, explores the electronic age and its effects on individuals and society. The letters in this collection - which in the early years provide a fascinating background to McLuhan's life and intellectual growth - are filled with discussions of ideas that altered people's understanding of many aspects of the electronic age they lived in. They reveal not only the amiability of a man who earned the friendship and respect of many outstanding people of his day, but also his staggering knowledge of the literature of the great writers and thinkers of the past and present, which inspired him to achieve his penetrating insights into his age and to become its most renowned interpreter. Collectively they furnish a readable and comprehensible gloss on the ideas that made McLuhan's name. His correspondents - distinguished scholars and colleagues, celebrated politicians, famous journalists, and stars of popular culture - range from Woody Allen to Tom Wolfe. The letters are organized in three sections, each with a period introduction: 1931-1936 takes McLuhan through the University of Manitoba and Cambridge University. 1936-1946 covers one year's teaching at the University of Wisconsin; two years at Saint Louis University; one year, with his bride, at Cambridge for work on his Ph.D.; four more years at Saint Louis; and two at Assumption College, Windsor, Ontario. This period includes many letters to Wyndham Lewis. The last section begins in 1946, when McLuhan joined the staff of St Michael's College, University of Toronto. (Two years later he began a long correspondence with Ezra Pound.) Covering the period of McLuhan's fame, it ends in September 1979 with a letter to Pierre Elliott Trudeau, written shortly before McLuhan suffered a stroke that rendered him speechless. This rich and varied collection of over 450 letters, by a man whose thought exerted a singular influence throughout the western world, is an important contribution to the cultural history of the twentieth century."
