ISBN 0948397616 "(This book) marks (Ede and Ravencroft, royal robemakers of Chancery Lane)'s tercentenary , celebrates a unique history of service to the State, Church and Law, as well as describing some of the many ceremonies at which their robes are displayed to such magnificent effect....Coronations provide the robemakers with their greatest chall e n g e. Royal coronation robes are truly spectacular, being made of the finest and richest materials, elaborately embroidered in gold, while the officers of Church and State are arrayed in the full panoply of their ceremonial dress in honour of th e So ve reign. The Peers in robes of crimson velvet with ermine trimming and cape, the Knights of the Orders of Chivalry in richly coloured robes and insignia, the Officers of Arms in their tabards and the great Officers of State are massed in rank s of rar e and unforgettable splendour. There are many other occasions on which ceremonial robes are regularly worn, and seen and admired by millions. The State Opening of Parliament brings together the Peers and Judges, the Officers of State and t he Bish ops to hear the Queen's Gracious Speech from the Throne. The annual Garter Ceremony at Windsor is an opportunity to see the Queen and other members of the Royal Family in their blue silk velvet Garter robes, accompanied by the Knights of th e Garte r and the Heralds of the College of Arms. At the Lord Chancellor's Breakfast in October, marking the beginning of the legal year, the most senior Judges wear their splendid black and gold gowns - made of black damask elaborately trimmed wit h gold l ace and handmade gold ornaments - and the High Court Judges their scarlet robes trimmed with ermine, as they process with black-gowned barristers between the House of Lords and Westminster Abbey. The annual election of the Lord Mayor of Lo nd on give s rise to a whole series of events at which civic robes are worn, and also sees the gathering together of the members of the livery companies, whose officers wear a great variety of ceremonial dress. In the summer, degree ceremonie s take pl ace all over the country, and an extraordinary number of variations on the basic theme of the academic gown and hood can be seen. (This book) contains a full account of Ede and Ravenscroft's central role in these occasions as makers of robes a nd w igs for three centuries. They enter their fourth century determined to uphold and maintain the highest standards of craftsmanship and skill in keeping with the ancient traditions of which they are so much a part." Saskatoon, Saskatchewan Western Producer Prairie Books 1982 0888330901 / 9780888330901 Hard Cover Very Good Very Good-
177 pp, 11 1/4" H. "Saskatoon began as a vision of the Temperance Colonization Society. Its members formulated a scheme for a colony in the West where a way of life free from the evils of alcohol might be fostered. Early in the spring of 1882, an advance party travelled by rail and wagon to examine their grant of land and to choose the administrative site for the settlement. By the beginning of the twentieth century, the temperance ideals had become secondary to boosterism. By 1905 discussions were underway to amalgamate the original Nutana settlement with 'Saskatoon' and Riversdale on the west side of the river. Their combined population of 4,500 allowed Saskatoon a charter under city status in 1906. By 1908 the city was served by three railway companies and the 'Hub City' station was one of the busiest in the West. (This book) brings the story of the city to life through nearly 300 photographs. It registers changes through two world wars, during the periods of prosperity and recession, into the optimism of the fifties and sixties and the more speculative expansion of the seventies." Christmas gift inscription in ink on front free endpaper, book is lightly cocked, light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, minor glue residue at top edge of rear endpapers. Dust jacket has light to moderate edge wear - mainly at top/bottom of spine ans flap-folds, light rubbing including faint scratches, 2" edge tear with old tape on inside, two tiny edge tears.

THE HISTORY OF BRITISH BUS SERVICES. 2nd REVISED EDITION., Hibbs, John.
16 Hibbs, John. THE HISTORY OF BRITISH BUS SERVICES. 2nd REVISED EDITION.
David & Charles, Newton Abbot, 1989, second, revised edition.
306 pp, 8vo (8 11/16" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0715389629 B&w photographs, drawings, maps. "The bus industry is going through a period of rapid change, and this is best understood against the background of events, for decisions taken a s long ago as 1916 still influence its structure, and the way busmen think about their function. There are many strands to the story, the longest taking us back to the appearance of the hackney carriage and the stage coach in the seventee n t h c e n t u r y. There are the combine companies of the inter-war years, and their battle with the four main line railways for control of their services; there are the 'pirates', old and new; and there are the municipal transport fleets, stemm in g us u al ly f ro m tr amway operations. We have to go to nineteenth century France for the origin of the name 'omnibus' itself. Professor Hibbs discusses the effect of technical advances on the provision of public services, and writes of tick et sy ste ms , t ime tab les , fle et names and liveries, and some of the odder regulations that govern operations and the travelling public. There is an objective discussion of methods of licensing and control, and of the economic and political ba ckg rou nd o f t he b us o pera tors . But this is the story of the men and women as well as motor vehicles; of shrewd pioneers, international financiers, trade unionists and well-known politicians. Not least it is the story of the crews on the b uses , fo r who m th e ind ustry is n ot ju st a li ving, but a way of life as well....(this new edition includes a chapter that brings) the story from 1968 to 1988." Slight waviness to fore-edge of textblock. Dust jacket has very light edge wri nklin g - m ainly along botto m edge , one minor chi p, min or rubbing, very small area of light color offset on inside surface. VG+/VG
