PRAGUE WINTER: A PERSONAL STORY OF REMEMBRANCE AND WAR, 1937-1948., Albright, Madeleine. With Bill Woodward.
1 Albright, Madeleine. With Bill Woodward. PRAGUE WINTER: A PERSONAL STORY OF REMEMBRANCE AND WAR, 1937-1948.
New York Harper 2012 0062030310 / 9780062030313 Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good+
467 pp, 9 1/4" H. B&w illustrations. "(T)akes readers from the Bohemian capital's thousand-year-old castle to the bomb shelters of London, from the desolate prison ghetto of Terezin to the highest councils of European and American government. Albright reflects on her discovery of her family's Jewish heritage many decades after the war, on her Czech homeland's tangled history, and on the stark moral choices faced by her parents and their generation. Often relying on eyewitness descrip-tions, she tells the story of how millions of ordinary citizens were ripped from familiar surroundings and forced into new roles as exiled leaders and collaborators, victims and killers. These events of enormous complexity are nevertheless shaped by concepts familair to any growing child: fear, trust, adaptation, the search for identity, the pressure to conform, the quest for independence, and the difference between right and wrong. At once a deeply personal memoir and an incisive work of history, 'Prague Winter' serves as a guide to the future through the lessons of the past - as seen through the eyes of one of the international community's most respected and fascinating figures." Light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine. Dust jacket has minor edge wear/wrinkling at top/bottom of hinges and flap-folds.

2 Bowyer, Chaz. BOMBER BARONS.
Barnsley, South Yorkshire Leo Cooper 2001 085052802X / 9780850528022 Reprint Hard Cover Very Good Very Good+
222 pp, large 8vo (9 7/16" H). B&w photographs. "By the end of the Second World War, a grim total of 55,000 air crew of Bomber Command has lost their lives. This figure comprised no less than seventy per cent of RAF fatalities. Yet, unlike their more glamorous fighter pilot colleagues, very few bomber pilots or crewmen were familiar household names to the general public. However, within the ranks of the RAF itself, some individuals stood out gaining high reputations for their courage and leadership, a respect achieved regardless of the decorations they had won or the number of sorties flown. These were the 'Bomber Barons'. In this authoritative book, (the author) chooses a selection of these men. Some like Leonard Cheshire, Guy Gibson and Hughie Edwards, are today well known but others such as Nick Knilans, Syd Clayton and Jo Lancaster, are familiar only to those 'in the know'. For each, the author details their careers and relates episodes that reflect the qualities that made them outstanding. At the same time, the reader learns of the unfolding dramatic development of Bomber Command from the comparatively uncoordinated, non-cohesive raids of the early part of the war to the highly-trained and deadly offensive weapon it became under Sir Arthur Harris, from 1942 AOC-in-C of Bomber Command, and the Greatest Baron of them all." Small very light stain in margin of page 16. Dust jacket has very minor edge wrinkling, a few very tiny dints, very minor rubbing.

TWILIGHT OF TRUTH: CHAMBERLAIN, APPEASEMENT AND THE MANIPULATION OF THE PRESS., Cockett, Richard.
6 Cockett, Richard. TWILIGHT OF TRUTH: CHAMBERLAIN, APPEASEMENT AND THE MANIPULATION OF THE PRESS.
Weidenfeld and Nicolson, London, 1989, first edition.
229 pp, large 8vo (9 7/16" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0297795481 B&w photographs. "(A) study of how the British Government manipulated the 'free' and 'independent' British press between 1937 and 1940. It tells the story of a hitherto ne glected aspect of Neville Chamberlain's ill-fated search for a 'rapproachement' with Nazi Germany and Italy, namely his assiduous and largely successful attempts to curb the hostility of the British press towards the Fascist states and enli s t t h e n e wspapers as active supporters in his policy of appeasement. Soon after coming to power in May 1937, Chamberlain learnt that Hitler regarded a 'tame' British press, free of adverse criticism of Germany, as an essential prerequisite t o an y a gr ee m en t between Germany and Britain; and for the next three years Chamberlain and his entourage at Downing Street set out to comply with Hitler's wishes - aided and abetted by the press barons. Chamberlain used a system of personal c on tac ts to cu rb th e p re ss, fully documented here for the first time, and he also relied heavily on the 'lobby' system of non-attributable political reporting to completely mislead the British people about the state of European affairs. (Thi s b ook) th rows new li ght on the role of some hitherto obscure members of Chamberlain's entourage, including his Press Secretary at Downing Street, George Steward, and Sir Joseph Ball, an ex-MI5 officer who ran the Conservative Research Depar tmen t. A t Ch amber lain' s be hest , Ba ll r an a scurrilous, anti-semitic newspaper called 'Truth' to slander his political opponents and even members of his own Cabinet. The involvement of Lord Beaverbrook, the most famous of the contemporary press propr ietor s, is also f ully revea led f or th e first time. Using original material from the Public Record Office and private archives, (it) exposes the way in which the peculiarly English customs and habits that governed relations between gover nment a nd pre ss bec ame ins titut ionali zed in the 1 930s to the permanent advantage of the government. (It) is thus a study of the system of government manipulation of the press - a system that exists to this day - as well as of Chamber lain an d appeas ement." Bloomsbury, London, 1997, first edition.
240 pp, large 8vo (9 7/16" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0747527237 B&w photographs, family tree. "Few people know about the affair Adolf Hitler had with his niece, Geli Raubal. It started in 1927, when he was thirty-eight and she was nine teen. Already leader of the National Socialist German Workers' Party, he had been imprisoned after the unsuccessful putsch of 1923, released at the end of 1924 and had been banned from speaking in public. It was then that he decided to rent a h o u s e in Obersaltzberg, an small alpine village close to the Austrian border. Geli came to live with him there, together with her mother, Angela Raubal, his widowed half-sister, but the ban was lifted before the Raubals moved in. Hitler could r e la x wi th his niece as he never had before with anyone else, and enjoyed her constant availability. He adored her and they could talk to each other uninhibitedly. The couple shared a strangely intense, passionate relationship, but it was al way s dog ge d b y H itler's intolerance, his chauvinistic attitude to womanhood and his possessive jealousy. Later, the weakening of the bond between (them) coincided with the phenomenal rise in the popularity of the Nazis...In 1931, aged twenty-t hree , Geli Ra ubal was found dead in the Munich flat she shared with Hitler, his revolver on the floor and an unfinished letter on the table. Hitler was shattered by his niece's death, and for the rest of his life couldn't speak of her without becom in g emo tion al... (This book) examines the degeneracy in the family Hitler and Geli came from and the emotional and sexual problems Hitler suffered, thus giving the reader an opportunity to take new bearings on Hitler as a man." 13 Howe, Ellic. THE BLACK GAME: BRITISH SUBVERSIVE OPERATIONS AGAINST THE GERMANS DURING THE SECOND WORLD WAR.
Michael Joseph, London, (1982), first edition.
276 pp, large 8vo (9 7/16" H), hard cover (black binding with gold lettering on spine) - no dust jacket. B&w photographs, reproductions. ISBN 0718117182 "This book is mainly concerned with certain British propaganda activities during the Second World War which were classified as 'black'. The BBC's broadcasts to Germany and enemy-occupied Europe, also leaflets bearing the imprint of HM Government and dropped by the RAF, were all 'white'. Black operations, however, never indicated their British origin. Various clandestine broadcasting stations, all of them outside the control of the BBC, sought, sometimes with surprising success, to give the impression that they were actually operating inside Germany or elsewhere in Europe. Great pains were taken to disguise the fact that a strangely variegated range of black printed matter had not, in spite of its convincing appearance and, where necessary, bogus imprints, been produced in Germany, France, Belgium, etc. Indeed, it was all manufactered in London. Little of it was disseminated by the RAF since other and far more covert methods were performed..." HITLER. 1889-1936: HUBRIS., Kershaw, Ian.
14 Kershaw, Ian. HITLER. 1889-1936: HUBRIS.
W.W. Norton, New York, 1999, book club edition.
845 pp, large 8vo (9 1/2" H), hard cover in dust jacket. B&w photographs. "From his birth in a small Austrian village to his fiery death in a bunker under the Reich chancellery in Berlin, Adolf Hitler left a murky trail, strewn with contradictory tales and overgrown with self-created myths. One truth prevails: the sheer scale of the evils that he unleashed on the world has made him a demonic figure without equal in this century....In an account drawing on many previously untapped so u r c e s - including Joseph Goebbels's diaries, recently discovered in Moscow - Hitler metamorphoses from an obscure fantasist, a 'drummer' sounding an insistent beat of hatred in Munich beer halls, to the instigator of the infamous failed putsch , to t he l e ad ership of a ragtag alliance of right-wing bullies and fanatics whose fusion created the Nazi party - the movement that would enthrall and invigorate a disillusioned people desperate to be rescued from the economic privation of pos tw ar Ger man y. W ith nuanced care, Kershaw assesses the response of ordinary Germans to Hitler the man and to his message of a new dawn for a country hemmed in by old foes, a message shot through with racist fantasies. This volume, the first of tw o, ends wit h t he prom ulgation of the infamous Nuremberg laws that pushed German Jews to the outer fringes of society, and with the march of the German army into the Rhineland - Hitler's first steps toward the abyss of war. Fascinating and d istu rbi ng, r ich w ith ins ight and analysis whose implications remain all too relevant as we near the end of Hitler's century." Minor wrinkling at top/bottom of spine. 366 pp, 9 1/4" H. B&w photographs. Volume 3 only. "(T)reats the depression years when King was first in Opposition and then the years after 1935 when he was once again Prime Minister; it is a masterly analysis of how one of the most enigmatic figures in Canadian history made shrewd and critical political decisions. Attention is paid in turn to his clearly successful tactics as Leader of the Opposition; the election campaign of 1935; a wide range of his domestic policies, including those on unemploy-ment, inflation, relief, and trade; and to a series of international crises - the Ethiopian crisis, the Spanish Civil War, Anschluss, and Munich - that culminated in the Second World War. At all times, King's over-riding concern was to preserve national unity at home and to avoid commitments abroad, either through the British Commonwealth or the League of Nations. We see King in his relations with other Canadian leaders - Aberhart, Pattullo, Hepburn, Duplessis, and Bennett - and with world leaders - Roosevelt, Baldwin, Chamberlain and Hitler. We also see the personal side of the man, and the link between the private and public figure." Book is clean and bright. Dust jacket has very minor edge wrinkling.

Over the next two months, staff were gradually transferred from the Berlin area to Wasserburg but, by April 28, American troops were advancing on Munich and General Koller decided to m ov e pa rt of his staff to the Berchtesgaden complex. By May 3, the first components had moved to Thumersbach, a beautiful Alpine village on the shores of the Zell and See lake, Koller himself arrived there on May 6. Two days later he was join ed by th e n ew L uftwaffe commander in chief, Robert Ritter von Greim. Koller's diary relates the maneuverings that surrounded these events, the growing interference in the day-to-day running of the Luftwaffe by the SS and Nazi Party Gauleiters (d ist ric t c ommi ssi on ers) which, combined with overwhelming Allied air superiority reduced the Luftwaffe, an air force which only six years ago had been the most powerful in the world, to complete chaos. He describes in graphic detail how Hitler , de sert ed b y all but Go ebbels and Bormann of the Nazi hierarchy, had an almost complete breakdown, and how Goring was removed from power and placed under arrest."
