Walker and Company, New York, 1967, first printing.
Unpaginated, 10" H, hardcover with pictorial front board - no dust jacket. "H.L. Stephens (1824-1882, originally from Philadelphia, later working in New York) was a very good illustrator who has been accorded faint praise by the critics. The reaso n is largely the result of the poor reproductions in which his work appeared. That is why this edition of 'A Frog he Would A-Wooing Go' uses the original drawings by Stephens, which are at the moment in private hands at Harvard University, r a t h e r t han the reproductive lithographs of 1865 which were made from them. The difference is striking; for these drawings compare with the works of Stephens' far more celebrated contemporary John Tenniel, whose 'Alice in Wonderland', Londo n , 19 65 , fi rs t s aw the light of day in the same twelve months." 15 full page monotone illustrations with verses underneath. Slight wrinkling to bottom edges of pages, slight waviness due to dampness at bottom fore-edge of pages - light wate rm ar k o n l as t p age , min or to light soiling on boards - mainly on rear board, tiny bump at top of spine.
