Cambridge University Press, Cambridge, 1998, reprint.
312 pp, 8vo (8 3/8" H), soft cover. ISBN 0521457270 "On 18 March 1314, Jacques de Molay, Grand Master of the Templars, was burned at the stake. For almost two centuries the knights of the Order of the Temple had flourished during the Crusades in Palestine and Syria, and in the West, notably in France. But in 1307, the Templars in France were arrested by King Philip IV's officials in the name of the Inquisition, their property seized and the men charged with serious heresies, including the denial of Christ, homosexuality, and idol worship. Confessions, extracted under torture, were brought before royal and papal tribunals, but in 1310 a number of Templar brothers mounted a defence of their Order, refuelling the controveries which cont inued for a further four years before the final executions. Malcolm Barber's fascinating account, assessing the charges brought against the Order, once again puts the Templars on trial." Interior - clean and tight with no previous ownersh i p m a r k s . 5 Bata, Thomas J. With Sonja Sinclair. BATA: SHOEMAKER TO THE WORLD.
Toronto Stoddart 1990 0773724168 / 9780773724167 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good
341 pp, 9 1/2" H. B&w photographs. "In 1932, when young Tom Bata watched his father's coffin being lowered into his grave, he silently promised to abide by the wishes expressed in his father's 'moral testament': that the Bata Shoe Company was to be treated not as a source of private wealth, but as a public trust, a means of improving the liviing standards within the community and providing customers with good value for their money. At the time, Tom had no idea of the challenges he would face in fulfilling that promise. Not only was he ill-equipped, at age eighteen, to step into the shoes of an acknowledged business genius, creator of the largest shoe manufacturing and retailing organization in the world. Worse than that, fate was about to deal him a series of painful blows. The subjugation of his homeland, Czechoslovakia, by the Nazis was followed by an acrimonious family rift, the expropriation by Communist regimes of all his holdings in Eastern and Central Europe and, in other parts of the world, economic and political upheavals that threatened the survival of the newly resuscitated Bata organization. Yet Bata actually thrived on the sudden change and adversity. From his new home base in Canada he built, this side of the Iron Curtain, a global empire that employs 70,000 people and plays an important part in the economies of many developing countries. (This) is the story of the man, his family and their business." Remainder mark (dot) on bottom of text block, light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine. Dust jacket has light edge wrinkling - mainly at top/bottom of spine and at top of rear flap, very light rubbing.

7 Betcherman, Lita-Rose. THE LITTLE BAND: THE CLASHES BETWEEN THE COMMUNISTS AND THE POLITICAL AND LEGAL ESTABLISHMENT IN CANADA, 1928-1932.
Ottawa Deneau 0888790716 / 9780888790712 First Printing Hard Cover Very Good Very Good
247 pp, 9 1/4" H. "In 1921, a 'little band' of disparate activists formed the Communist Party of Canada. Civil authorities across the country reacted with fear, even though R.C.M.P. officers described the party as 'a handful of ineffective English-speaking leaders, a negligible French-speaking element, an isolated Jewish element, with the agitators drawn from the Finnish and Ukrainian immigrants, whose benevolent societies paid for the Party's maintenance'. (This book) documents the ensuing clashes between the Canadian communists and Canada's political and legal establishments, from 1928 to 1932. Dr. Betcherman skillfully recreates the excitement of street fights and court cases, culminating in the spectacular trial of communist Tim Buck. (She) interviewed Communist Party members, Crown attorneys and Defence lawyers of the period, and was granted access to rare transcripts of trials, appeals and correspondence in compiling this, the first detailed and thoroughly entertaining history of these events." THE ROYAL HORSE ARTILLERY. FAMOUS REGIMENTS SERIES., Bidwell, Shelford. Introduction by Lieut.-General Sir Brian Horrocks.
8 Bidwell, Shelford. Introduction by Lieut.-General Sir Brian Horrocks. THE ROYAL HORSE ARTILLERY. FAMOUS REGIMENTS SERIES.
Leo Cooper, London, 1973, first edition.
115 pp, 8vo (8 11/16" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0850521386 B&w photographs, maps, reproductions. Music for Regimental Slow March, Trot Past, Gallop Past. "Many people's visual image of the Royal Horse Artillery is probably confined to the dazzling equestrian performances of the King's Troop which annually entrance schoolboys of all ages at the Royal Tournament. How many people pause to wonder why, in the reign of Queen Elizabeth II, there should be a King's Troop? How many stop to consider why indeed there should have been a separate formation of mounted artillery in the British Army at all? Brigadier Bidwell answers these and most other questions about the Royal Horse Artillery, and as an experienced author, as e d i t o r o f the Royal United Services Institute Journal and an ex-Horse Gunner himself he could hardly be better suited to his task. From their formation in 1793 to the present day the Royal Horse Artillery have had but one objective - to exc e l. Th ey a re in deed a corps d'elite but a corps d'elite whose claim to distinction is based entirely on merit and, as Brigadier Bidwell shows, for nearly two hundred years they have rigidly adhered to their self imposed standard of excellence . He has pa id wor t hy tribute to a body of men whose name will shine forever in the annals of British military history." Very light cigarette odor, very light browning to pages and edges of text block, faint water marks at top/bottom edge of b oa rds - mai nly on rear b oar d. Dust jacket has very light browning, small closed tear at top of rear hinge, very light edge wrinkling, water marks at edges - mainly inside top edge, old price label on front flap. Very Good-/Good+

9 Blower, James. Foreword by Grant MacEwan. GOLD RUSH: A PICTORIAL LOOK AT THE PART EDMONTON PLAYED IN THE GOLD ERA OF THE 1890s.
Toronto Ryerson Press 1971 007092919X / 9780070929197 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good
199 pp, oblong (8 3/4" H x 10 5/8" D). Profusely illustrated with b&w photographs, reproductions. "By 1898 all roads led to the Klondike. One such road was to pass through the tiny Edmonton community, and Edmonton was never to be the same again. As the gateway and principal outfitting centre to one of the most popular - albeit treacherous - overland trails to the Yukon gold fields, Edmonton, then only 1500 strong, found itself playing host to over 2000 rough and hearty Klondikers. Within two years the town population doubled, local merchants prospered, business boomed. They were colourful times, not to be missed, and James Blower recounts them fondly. He salutes those boisterous, hopeful men equipped with pack horses, ox teams or dog sleds, embarking on a wild journey of more than 1600 miles through forests, swamps, perilous rivers and lakes. Parties of men never heard from again - did they strike it rich in the gold fields or were they victims of drowning, scurvey, starvation? Fortunately, Edmonton boasted two excellent photographers during the Klondike days - W.C. Mathers and Ernest Brown - who recorded on film this extraordinary period in history. Their photographs, most of which have never been published before, represent the greater part of this book." Faint thin red pen mark on top of text block. Dust jacket has minor efge wrinking, two very small edge tears archivally taped, an areas of a four tiny scuffs on front panel, very light soiling on rear panel.

ARMS & ARMOUR OF THE SAMURAI. (ARMOR.), Bottomley, I. and Hopson, A.P.
10 Bottomley, I. and Hopson, A.P. ARMS & ARMOUR OF THE SAMURAI. (ARMOR.)
Bison, London, 1988, first edition.
192 pp, 4to (12 1/8" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 086124415X Profusely illustrated in colour and b&w with photographs, reproductions, drawings. "A member of the aristocracy, from the tenth century the Samurai was primarily a mounted archer . This is reflected in the light, lamellar yoroi armour which left the right arm free for drawing his bow. Helmets were simple, with leather neckpieces. Battle began with an exchange of arrows, and was followed by a series of hand-to-han d c o m b a t s among champions who relied on the sword. The long wars of Kusonoki and Ashikaga produced several changes in the nature of warfare. Fighting in wooded, mountainous countryside, hand-to-hand combat came into its own. The bulky yor oi wa s su pe rc ed ed by the lighter, less constricting do maru and the no dachi, a longer version of the naginata (glaive), was introduced. The renowned Samurai cult of the sword began in this period. The Samurai's most ornate and elaborate ar mou r da te s f rom th e T oku gawa era, and was probably not intended for use in actual battle. The long development of arms and armour in the Samurai's 700-year history is fully detailed in this handsome volume. Illustrated with over 300 photo grap hs , (i t) will be a we lcom e ad dition to the libraries of all military enthusiasts." Somerton, Somerset Crecy 1992 0947554254 / 9780947554255 Hard Cover Very Good Good+
532 pp, large 8vo (9 1/2' H). B&w photographs, maps. "No. 2 Group was formed in Bomber Command to support the Army. After equipping with Blenheims it specialized in daylight operations. It engaged in the first raid of the war. After taking part in the Norweigan campaign, it was thrown into the struggle to save France. Heavy losses ensued during operations demanding great courage. A hazardous anti-shipping campaign took the Group to Malta. Night intruder operations were made against airfields, and fighter-escorted attacks on Occupied Territory continued until the 1944 Allied landings in France, where support to the invasion was subsequently given and an effective night interdictor campaign carried out. The Group mounted many spectacular operations, particularly when using Mosquitoes. This is indeed a story of immense courage. Based upon records maintained by Royal Air Force Commands, Groups and Squadrons together with personal accounts by those who flew with the Group, the book gives a detailed day-by-day picture of operations, their planning and execution, illustrated with detailed maps. Appendices give plentiful details of the aircraft, the squadrons and the Group's wartime effort." Three small dints on rear board, light rubbing. In a breezy and colloquial style the author tells of his experiences in and around Banff, of his political life, experiences in the army during World War I, and his encounters with important visitors in the Canadian Rockies. 231 pp, 7 7/8" H. Dust jacket design by William Stobbs. B&w drawings. "Bari, a half-breed boy of the North American Indian country, has two driving passions: his love of the wild animals of his home in Northern Ontario, and his great urge to draw them. In these he is encouraged by Paddy, the friendly trapper who brings him up from the age of nine. But it is only after going unwillingly to school and then learning that success does not come without work and hardship that Bari eventually begins to see ahead of him the life on an artist which he had dreamed about for so long. Miss Carruthers taught for many years in a school for Indians in the Canadian bushland. 253 pp, 10 1/4" H. Profusely illustrated with b&w photographs. "1973 marks the centennial anniver- sary of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police. (This book is) a pictorial tour of adventure through those glorious early days. One hundred years is not long when we are talking about history, but a glance at these photographs shows the phenomenal growth of Canada during that period. And the man who laid the groundwork for this phenomenal growth was the Mountie. Without his work of pacification, the task of settling and civilizing the Canadian west could not have been carried out. The photographers who took these pictures must have been imbued with the same spirit of adventure that motivated the Mountie. The proof is here. Wherever the men of the N.W.M.P. went, the photographers followed. The results of their work are here, a fitting tribute to the men of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police."
