2 Allen, Gillian. YESTERDAY'S TOWN: WELLINGTON. A DIARY OF A WEST COUNTRY TOWN IN THE 19th CENTURY.
Buckingham Barracuda 1987 0860232921 / 9780860232926 Limited Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good
124 pp, small 4to (10 7/16" H). Number 368 of a limited edition. Profusely illustrated with b&w photographs, reproductions. "(I)t is the detail of the 19th century record which attracts us most; the people who lived in specific houses like the Millers, Langleys and Merediths; the controversy about the three posts outside the White Hart Inn; the shops that changed from bank to fishmonger, from watchmaker to cobbler, from Bell Inn to basketmaker; the man who dug a canal in his garden to employ poor people; the ten-year-old who died when her pinny caught fire; the horse that took nine men to the gallows. Here too is the fire brigade whose captain refused entry to his own team as his cottage blazed away; the riots when a cemetery was proposed; the earliest chapels built and closed; Ann Pain, who stole a bullock's heart on St. Valentine's Day; Mr Marks, who lost 50 Pounds at Wellington Fair; elderly Maria Strippling, sentenced to seven days' labour for pinching threepennorth of hay; and the 4,703 tramps who came to Wellington in 1865. Transport changed the town, when the turnpikes, canal, railway and finally motorcar came. The first car owner was heavily fined; the first acceptable motor hit the Town Hall. Taverns prospered, and there were 75 at one time or another. Thirteen survive. The greatest change of all came with the Great War - 'our old world has gone forever' said the local 'rag'. That world is recreated (here) - in a fluent, fascinating and fact-packed narrative and some 200 pictures, many of them rare, and most unique to this book." Book is slightly cocked. Dust jacket has very light wrinkling at top edge, a few small faint indentations on panels, minor rubbing.

LAKONIA., Bond, Geoffrey.
5 Bond, Geoffrey. LAKONIA.
Oldbourne, London, 1966, first edition.
200 pp, 8vo (8 3/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. B&w photographs, frontispiece. "During the evening of 19 December 1963 the twin-screw Motor Ship 'Lakonia' slid through the grey waters of the Solent, bound for sunshine and warmer seas. Her hull and superstructure gleamed like 'a newly iced Christmas cake, for she had been recently overhauled and completely redecorated'. (651) passengers were aboard the liner for her Christmas cruise --- The 'Lakonia' began to burn on Sunday, 22 Decem b e r . Four days later she was a pitiful, smoke-grimed wreck, wallowing at the mercy of the waves. On Sunday, 29 December - just a week after the initial diaster - she slid beneath the waters of the North Atlantic to her last resting-place. (Th is ) is t he story of unfortunate, originally minor circumstances, slowly building up until they finally overwhelmed the ship, her crew and passengers. But the pattern of crew and passenger heroism is at least as great as that of any perhaps more dra ma tic di saster. Reluctant to leave the ship, the crew - and many passengers - tried desperately to overcome events and save her. There was no panic - from first to last. Air-sea-rescue, radio, telephone, and computers went into action to s ave tho se i n pe ril on the sea - and it was the first time that the system of A.M.V.E.R. (Atlantic Merchant Vessel Emergency Report), had been used in any major shipping disaster. Ships of all nationalities sped towards the stricken liner. The B riti sh f reigh ter ' Montcalm', the Argentine 'Salta', the Pakistani 'Mehi' - and then there was the ship that passed 'Lakonia' by in her hour of need ---. (This) is a graphic account of the strength and bravery of ordinary persons under threat of deat h. I t is a n open , objective and factual reconstruction of what happened." Wrinkling at bottom of spine, light browning on top of text block. Dust jacket has been price clipped, has light edge wear/wrinkling and a few tiny edge tears, ver y ligh t rubb ing. London William Kimber 1974 0718303733 / 9780718303730 Hard Cover Very Good Very Good
128 pp, 8 1/2" H. Profusely illustrated with cartoons in black, white, blue and red. "Records of World War II are incomplete without a tribute to the 'Fighting Services Title-Abbreviating Department', and the inspired minds therein which christened the Women's Royal Naval Service the WRENS. Surely the dedicated brood - such invaluable handmaidens to Britannia in her wave-ruling activities - owes something to such a delightful title. Captain Jack Broome also feels indebted to the Department for enabling him to call his gay, witty book of illustrated verses about these fledglings 'Services Wrendered'. In their many roles, in dockyards, on parade grounds, driving cars, teleprinters, or motor-boats with such enthusiasm and apparent awe for naval tradition, gold braid and authority, there remained that beautifully balanced, built-in, not-so-subservient subservience." Previous owner's name on free front endpaper and on title page, slight colour fading to top edge of boards and bottom edge of spine, minor wrinkles at top of spine. Dust jacket has slight browning at edges, minor edgewear/rubbing.

Ian Allan, Shepperton, 1998, first edition.
128 pp, large 8vo (9 1/2" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0711024901 Profusely illustrated with b&w photographs, reproductions. "For biking enthusiasts worldwide the names of the great British manufacturers trip off the tongue - BSA, Triumph, Norton, Rudge, Ariel, Greeves, Velocette, Vincent and many more; names that are redolent of the era when British bikes dominated motor sport. Such was the impact of the postwar Japanese competition, however, that the British motorcycle ind u s t r y a l l but died. There have been occasional green shoots of recovery, but these were often ill-funded and doomed to eventual failure. But, like many other industries in Britain, rumours of the final death of the industry have been greatl y ex ag ge ra t ed a nd, as we approach the centenary of the motor industry, there are grounds for optimism that from the ashes of earlier failures a new motorcycle industry is emerging. In (this book), the latest in the highly successful 'Ian All an Tr ans por t L ib rar y' series, Paul Collins examines the history of each of the various manufacturers that gave Britain its pre-eminence. The book is illustrated thoughout with a superb selection of photographs that recall the glory years. W ith its com preh ensi ve A-Z cov erage, (it) provides readers with a concise and readable account of one of the great British industries; an industry that has given employment and pleasure to thousands." London Gollancz 1978 0575022590 / 9780575022591 Fourth Impression Hard Cover Very Good Very Good
287 pp, 8vo (8" H). "In and around a very English village, murder follows murder, and corpse is piled upon corpse. Fen, whom Crispin fans will remember well, is once again the man who finally sorts out the very intricate puzzle; but for much of the book he is an accessory after the fact, and in a peculiarly gruesome manner. The Rector, the Major, and even old Gobbo, take a hand at playing detective, much to the confusion of Detective-Superintendant Ling. And the lively yarn culminates in a chase to end all chases - involving the local hunt, hunt saboteurs, a herd of rampaging cows, a motor-cycle scramble, a runaway burglar, a team of bloody-minded engineers, the major on horseback, and the police, variously motivated." Minor wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, a few tiny foxing marks on top of text block at spine, previous owner's name in ink on free front endpaper. Dust jacket has light edge wrinkling - mainly at top/bottom of spine, soft crease at top of front panel.

48 pp, oblong (8 1/4" H x 11" D), stapled in wraps. B&w and color photographs, b&w drawings. "(The Luftwaffe looked) into the possibility of producing inexpensive aircraft which, however, would have enough power to quickly engage the enemy formations. Consequently, the machines which were created were predominantly made of wood, a raw material not important to the war effort. Assembly and construction were kept as simple as possible. In this way these machines could be completed without affecting the already overloaded industry. The rocket motor was a natural choice for a power plant due to its high performance. The take-off and landing procedures were kept simple to avoid long training periods for pilots. Take-off was accomplished via a tow or the vertical take-off. Landing was made on skids or the fighter abandoned and the pilot and important components (e.g. motor, weapons systems) recovered by parachute. What follows is the history of t he development of these technically highly-interesting aircraft." Inside - clean and tight with no previous ownership marks.
