THE DESERT GENERALS., Barnett, Correlli.
3 Barnett, Correlli. THE DESERT GENERALS.
William Kimber, London, 1960, second edition.
320 pp, large 8vo (9 1/2" H), hard cover in dust jacket. Map endpapers, b&w photographs, maps/battle plans. "The first portrait is of Sir Richard O'Connor, who won the fantastic victories over Graziani's Italians in 1940. The author shows that th e credit for the daring and unorthodox planning is due to O'Connor and not to Wavell; he puts forward a convincing argument to show that Tripoli could have been taken - and the North African campaign ended - in February, 1941, if the Prime Mi n i s t e r had not diverted forces to Greece. Of Sir Alan Cunningham, first commander of 8th Army, there is a picture of imaginative insight. The author shows that the crisis in the 'Crusader' battle of November, 1941, was caused by twenty years o f ne gl ec t a nd traditionalism, although the brunt fell on Cunningham, then a sick man. In Sir Neil Ritchie, next 8th Army commander, the author sees personified the characteristics of the Establishment - rigidity, social charm and professiona l c on ser vat ism . H e shows how Ritchie was beaten in the summer battles of 1942 by the dynamism of German leadership. With 8th Army in danger of complete collapse, the C.-in-C., Sir Claude Auchinleck, took over direct command in order to try t o sa ve the Midd le E as t a nd its vital oil. In the next few weeks he won a great but never officially acknowledged victory in the First Battle of Alamein. The author believes that this was the true turning point of the war, making possible the ' Torch ' l andi ngs i n Fre nch Nor th Africa. Auchinleck's reward was dismissal - as, the author shows, a political scapegoat. Although Field-Marshal Montgomery has recounted his own story, there is another side to it, told here for the first tim e. Th e au thor discus ses th e pl ans f or Montgomery's first victory of Alam Halfa which had been made by Auchinleck and his officers; he submits that the Battle of Alamein was not impeccably handled, and that Rommel's escape afterwards was not o wing to rain , but to the hesita nt, ' broad front' pursuit - the very error of which Montgomery was to accuse Eisenhower in 1944." Previous owner's small bookplate and small light stain on front pastedown, light browning to edges of text block, minor w rinkli ng at top/bott om of sp ine, o ne pag e with tiny edge tear and crease. Dust jacket has wear/wrinkles/tiny chips at top/bottom of hinges and flap-folds, small surface paper loss at top of spine, light browning on spine and flap-fold s, two ed ge tear s with creases - old tap e repai r, one tiny edge tear, light wear on flap-folds. William Morrow, New York, (1993), 1st. edition
288 pp, large 8vo (9 1/2" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0688118372 B&w photographs, map/battle plans. "According to General Omar Bradley, it was a chance that 'comes to a commander once in a century'. The opportunity was to surround and de stroy the enemy armies opposing the Allies in Normandy. Three months after the Allies invaded France on D-Day, the Germans had stuck their head into a noose and made themselves vulnerable to encirclement and annihilation in the Falaise Pocket . H a d the Allies succeeded in springing the trap at Falaise quickly enough, they would certainly have brought World War II in Western Europe to a triumphant end. Instead, the Allies failed and unnecessarily prolonged the war for another eight m on t hs . ( The author's) new and unsparing look at Generals Eisenhower, Montgomery, and Bradley challenges the conventional treatment of those commanders and of the Normandy campaign itself." 8 Brock, Jeffry V. WITH MANY VOICES. VOLUME I: THE DARK BROAD SEAS & VOLUME II: THE THUNDER AND THE SUNSHINE. MEMOIRS OF A SAILOR. 2 VOLUME SET.
Toronto McClelland & Stewart 1981 0771016239 / 9780771016233 First Editions Hard Cover Very Good Very Good-
275 pp, 384 pp, 9 1/4" H - 2 volume set. 'The Dark Broad Seas' - ISBN 0771016239- published 1981. 'The Thunder and the Sunshine' - ISBN 0771016255 - published 1983. B&w frontispiece in Volume I. The autobiography of Rear Admiral Jeffry V. Brock. In volume I he "describes his experiences as a commander of escort groups in the U-boat ridden Atlantic of World War II. Woven through the high adventure of combat are encounters with colourful political and military figures, and the feisty people of Britain. In 1950, Brock was appointed to command the Canadian naval forces sent to Korea. His meetings with General MacArthur are frankly recounted and give a unique view of this larger-than-life figure, and his handling of the Korean conflict." In volume II, "Brock writes of his time on the Directing Staff of the National Defence College of Canada and of fascinating overseas tours. He recalls meeting eminent personages of his day, such as Lord Louis Montbatten and Field Marshal Mont-gomery. He describes four interest-filled years in London as Naval Adviser to the High Commissioner and as Canada's naval representative in Europe. He returned to Canada in 1957, and a few years later was promoted to Rear Admiral. While serving as Vice Chief of Naval Staff in Ottawa, he sensed the distant rumblings of a new confrontation - a confrontation that spelled the end of the R.C.N. as men of Brock's era knew it. Paul Hellyer, the newly appointed Minister of Defence, was steering the federal government toward a plan for the unification of Canada's armed services. Brock, in this hard-hitting, brutally honest section of his memoirs, breaks his two-decade silence with an account of the bureau-cratic engineering which culminated in his forced retirement and the dismissal of a great many loyal officers of senior rank." Minor wrinkling at top/bottom of spines, minor soiling on top edge of text block of vol. I, tiny dent on bottom of text block of vol. II. Dust jackets have light to moderate edge wear, light rubbing - mainly on rear panel, vol. II is sprice-clipped.

13 Chandler, David, general editor. Ian Beckett, associate editor. THE OXFORD ILLUSTRATED HISTORY OF THE BRITISH ARMY.
Oxford University Press, Oxford, 1994.
493 pp, large 8vo, hard cover in dust jacket. Profusely illustrated with b&w photographs, maps, reproductions, color plates. "From longbow, pike, and musket to Challenger tanks, from the Napoleonic Wars to the Gulf campaign, the Duke of Marlborough to Field Marshal Montgomery, (this book) recounts the history of the British Army from its medieval antecedents to the present day. Drawing on the latest scholarship, this survey shows how British fighting forces have evolved over the last five centuries. The continuities revealed are sometimes surprising: narrow recruitment patterns, friction between soldiers and civilians, financial constraints and recurrent political pressure for economies are constant themes. Commanders, campaigns, battles, organization, and weaponry are covered in detail within the wider context of the social, economic, and political environment in which armies exist and fight." London Victor Gollancz 1979 0575027177 / 9780575027176 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good
160 pp, 8" H. "Most of (these stories feature Crispin's) don-detective, the brilliant Gervase Fen, and/or his almost equally sharp-witted friend and (unofficial) colleague, Detective Inspector Humbleby of Scotland Yard. And all of the stories are as taut as a highly-strung bow, and score a remarkable series of bull's-eyes. They turn upon a fine assortment of clues - dandelions and deaf-aids, Sunday closing in Wales, a blood-stained cat, a Leonardo drawing. Some clues need some special know- ledge to unravel - of French or German, music or photography - while others are challengingly obvious. There are devices and tricks of extraordinary ingenuity - murder by letter, a circular literary forgery. And cleverest of all, perhaps, there are the many variations on faked alibis and switched victims - the alibied corpse that gives the killer an alibi, or the faked alibi that breaks an alibi. There seems no limit to the intricacy of Edmund Crispin's invention - or to the sheer delight that his puzzles provide." Minor wrinkling at top/bottom of spine. Dust jacket has light edge wrinkling - mainly at top edge.

FATAL DECISION: ANZIO AND THE BATTLE FOR ROME., D'Este, Carlo.
17 D'Este, Carlo. FATAL DECISION: ANZIO AND THE BATTLE FOR ROME.
HarperCollins, New York, 1991, book club edition.
566 pp, 8vo (8 1/2" H), hard cover in dust jacket. Map endpapers, b&w photographs, maps/battle plans. "By taking advantage of Allied command of the sea and air to effect complete surprise, infantry and armored forces landing at Anzio on January 22 were expected to secure a beachhead and then push inland to cut the two main highways and railroads supplying the German armies to the south, either trapping and annihilating them or forcing them to withdraw north and opening the way to R o m e . S u c h was the plan. What really happened, brilliantly told by Carlo D'Este, was a near disaster for the Allies and the unfortunate soldiers involved. Doomed by uncertain leadership at the highest levels, including Churchill's pressure an d me dd l in g, G en eral Sir Harold Alexander's lack of firm directives, and General Mark Clark's unwillingness to risk defeat or push a tired General John Lucas, the Anzio beachhead became a death trap, with Allied troops forced to fight for the ir li ves f o r f ive dr ead ful months in a throwback to the trench warfare of World War I. Even the enventual Allied victory, when the Germans finally gave way in May 1944, was tarnished by Clark's ambition to be first in Rome instead of a ttem pti ng t o cu t o ff and des troy or capture fleeing German troops...." 566 pp, 9 1/2" H. Undated reprint of the 1945 edition, c1999. A volume in the "Leaders of Our Time" series. "On June 6, 1944, a decisive day in the history of the Western World, the radio had been blaring reports of the progress of American troops on the Normandy beachhead since long before dawn. The man whose portrait is examined in this book had reached the supreme moment of his career. This work is a first hand account of Dwight D. Eisenhower from his early years in Texas through his military service in World War II. It documents his training at West Point, his tour of duty in WWI and then his meteoric rise as war leader and stateman in World War II. Extensive interviews that the author conducted with Eisenhower in London in the days leading up to the Normandy invasion shed new light on the strategic thinking that lay behind the momentous plans that were then being formulated. They also provide an intimate look at Eisenhower the man and the deeply held sense of values that would see him through the war and then later inform his tenure as president of the United States." But in the autumn Adolf Hitler decided to take an incredible gamble. I f it had succeeded, he would have seized the crucial supply port of Antwerp, and divided and cut off half the Allied armies in Belgium and Holland. The final outcome could have been their surrender or at best a second 'Dunkirk'. 20 Delve, Ken. D-DAY: THE AIR BATTLE.
Ramsbury Crowood Press 2004 1861267045 / 9781861267047 Revised and Enlarged Edition. Hard Cover Very Good Very Good
192 pp, 10" H. Profusely illustrated with b&w photographs, reproductions, maps/plans. "6 June 1944 saw the Allied invasion of occupied Europe - one of the riskiest military operations of World War Two. The part played by air power in the success of the operation was crucial. This was the greatest concentration of striking power ever seen: 12,000 combat aircraft. Fighter-bombers such as the P-47 Thunderbolt and Hawker Typhoon bombed, strafed and rocketed tactical targets with great accuracy, while strategic bombers, escorted by hundreds of fighters, targeted bridges, marshalling yards, coastal guns and military stores. Other aircraft flew sophisticated decoy operations and hundreds of transports dropped paratroops or released gliders. In this, the only full-length book on the subject, Ken Delve examines the air campaign from the pre-invasion bombing strategy that prepared the battlefield to the massive air effort that accompanied the actual assault and the air umbrella during the vital weeks following the landings. Originally published in 1994, (it) has been substantially enlarged, re-illustrated and completely reset (providing) comprehensive coverage of this vital air campaign."
