Collins, London, 1967.
153 pp, 7 3/8" H, hard cover in dust jacket. B&w illustrations. "Enid Blyton did not mean to write this book. There were already four books in this Mystery Series, all about Roger, Diana, Snubby and his mad little spaniel - four books in which th e circus boy, Barney, was seeking his unknown father. In 'The Rubadub Mystery' he found him - and that was to be the end of the series. But the lovers of these 'Barney Books' begged so hard for yet another, that there was nothing for it b u t t o w r i te a fifth. So here it is, sure of a tremendous welcome, for here are all the well-loved characters again - with Loony the spaniel and Miranda the monkey, madder and more comical than ever! A winter holiday down at Rat-at-Tat Hou se , in th e s no w- cl ad hills, cut off from everywhere - and mystery and adventure spring up out of the snow! Who came knocking at night! Whose were the mysterious footprints in the snow? What was the wandering Snowman? What was hidden in th e c el lar ? T hi s is ind eed a very strange mystery - an Enid Blyton Mystery which, as ever, will hold your attention from the first word to the last." Collins, London, 1961.
256 pp, 7 3/8" H, hard cover in dust jacket. B&w illustrations. "....the second of a wonderful mystery series....We meet the same characters as in 'The Rockingdown Mystery'....Roger and Diana, and Snubby, with his amusing dog, Loony; Barney, with his comical monkey, Miranda. In this book there is a strange mystery: the theft of papers from rooms whose doors and windows are locked. How are these robberies committed, and who is the thief? Somehow the mystery centres itself on Rilloby Fair, and so, of course, Enid Blyton brings a whole Fair to life, with its queer and interesting characters. Vosta and his chimpanzees, Young-Un and Billy Tell of the shooting-range, Old Ma, the roundabout boy, the loud-voiced Tonnerre and his elephants, and many others." 205 pp, 8 3/4" H. B&w photographs, drawings, tables. "Here, described with enthusiasm and authority, is not only the whole history of rocket development from the days of the first discovery of an explosive mixture before the birth of Christ, but also the latest information on the harnessing of the tremendous new propellants available today, which may soon make journeys into space a commonplace of human life. Both (authors) are technical experts in their own fields. While their working hours are concerned with terrestrial problems, their scientific curiosity and knowledge are also beamed into the outer reaches of the Ether. They have accordingly produced a series of blueprints for the construction of an artificial satellite freely revolving in its own orbit around the Earth, and for the great liners which will take off from it on their flashing journeys to starry destinations in our own solar system and even, perhaps, beyond. There are nearly 100 (illustrations): historical records of early experiments, magnificent modern photographs of the latest achievements, and in addition a series of exciting drawings, specially made for the book, of space stations and space ships, which not only fire the imagination, but are precise in every detail." VERSATILE YANKEE: THE ART OF JONATHAN FISHER, 1768-1847., Winchester, Alice.
20 Winchester, Alice. VERSATILE YANKEE: THE ART OF JONATHAN FISHER, 1768-1847.
Princeton Pyne Press 1973 878610510 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good- Jonathan Fisher.
29 pp + 40 plates (printed on one side of leaf, captions facing), + (9) pp List of Works, 12 1/4" H. Colour plates plus additional b&w illustrations. The Reverend Jonathan Fisher of Blue Hill, Maine "was a universal man - inventor, farmer, architect and builder, surveyor, linguist, naturalist. Above all he was an artist, translating his vision of the goodness and orderliness of God's creation into paintings and woodcuts. Made for his own enjoyment and that of his family and a few friends, Fisher's paintings have largely been preserved in the small community where he lived and worked for forty years. This book, while it reveals Fisher's many-sided personality, is basically devoted to illustrating his work. The majority of his paintings are published here for the first time - the water colors from his notebooks, begun when he was an undergraduate at Harvard, and lovingly bound with his own hands; a selection of his most important paintings in oil; and many of the woodcuts with which he illustrated his books. Here, carefully recorded, with straight-forward and painstaking realism, are Fisher's college and his village, the fruits of his garden, and the animals and birds of field and forest. No subject is too small to engage his interest, none too dry to be transformed by his imagination. The common house fly and a wondrous carrot are fully detailed; garlands of fruits and flowers run riot through his mathematical exercises." Previous owner's bookplate on front pastedown, minor twist to spine. Dust jacket has very light edge wear/wrinkling, three edge tears archivally taped, very light rubbing, several light scratches on rear panel.
