STAND ON GUARD: THE SEARCH FOR A CANADIAN DEFENCE POLICY., Brewin, Andrew.
6 Brewin, Andrew. STAND ON GUARD: THE SEARCH FOR A CANADIAN DEFENCE POLICY.
McClelland and Stewart, Toronto, 1965, first edition.
140 pp, 8vo (8 5/8" H), hard cover in dust jacket. "In today's nuclear era, in a world now spending roughly $120 billion annually preparing for war, all other questions fade into insignificance in comparison with the problem of preventing conflict. Yet in this race toward annihilation Canada, with a limited budget and modest military strength, could carve for herself a new, significant and perhaps decisive role, if her military and political leaders could set aside tradition-bound c o n c e p t s , concentrating instead on the unique position Canada can hold on a world scale. Penetrating to the heart of our 'defence muddle', stripping away the military jargon that surrounds military discussions, Mr. Brewin traces Canada's m il it ar y ro le s in ce the formation of NATO in 1949, shows why the United States' concept of 'massive retaliation' has lost all practical meaning, and urges Canada to divorce herself from policies which are obsolete, provocative, and meaningles s. Sp eak in g a s o ne of the political leaders whose thoughts may play a major role in shaping this country's defence policies in the future, he outlines with persuasive clarity the factors which make it imperative for Canada to abandon tactical nu clea r we apo ns a nd c onc ent rate on developing a compact, efficient, highly mobile non-nuclear fighting force capable of tackling 'brushfire wars' anywhere in the world." Slight bump at bottom of front hinge/spine, minor wrinkle at top of spin e, ti ny di nt o n bot tom o f re ar b oard. Dust jacket has light edge wear/wrinkling; light browning/foxing on flap-folds, spine and parts of panels; light rubbing; very small color scuff on rear hinge; two tiny tears - one with creases. 176 pp, 12 1/4" H. Profusely illustrated with b&w and colour photographs, drawings, reproductions. "(B)egins with the earliest pieces of Western artillery that were little more than iron tubes firing stone shot. Over the next few centuries the guns became more mobile and more powerful, influencing the course of the battles in which they were involved. Muzzle loaders reached their apogee in the Napoleonic wars and the American Civil War during the nineteenth century. By the outbreak of World War I in 1914, breech-loaded guns were the standard, and weapons of such large calibres were being constructed that they needed to be mounted on rail wagons to give them any form of mobility. Artillery played a significant role in shaping how that conflict was fought, and it was to play an equally signifi-cant role in World War II. Only now, in the twenty-first century, is the supremacy of artillery on the battlefield being challenged by air-dropped precision-guided weapons, but the arm is fighting back with sophisticated new munitions becoming available which will ensure that artillery has a part to play on the modern battlefield for the forseeable future." Chapter headings: Sighting Shots; The American Civil War; Storm of Steel, 1900-1935; Master of the Battlefield, 1936-1945; Cold War Killers; Glossary; Index. Book is fine. BRAVO TWO ZERO., McNab, Andy.
12 McNab, Andy. BRAVO TWO ZERO.
Bantam, London, 1993, reprint.
374 pp, large 8vo (9 1/2" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 059303421X Colour and b&w photographs, drawings. "On the night of 22 January 1991, at a remote airfield in Saudi Arabia, under cover of darkness and in conditions on utmost secrecy, ei ght members of the SAS regiment boarded a helicopter that was to infiltrate them deep behind enemy lines. Their mission, under the command of Sergeant Andy McNab, was to sever the underground communication link between Baghdad and northwest I r a q , a nd to seek and destroy mobile Scud launchers before Israel was provoked into entering the war. Their call-sign: Bravo Two-Zero. Each man laden with fifteen stone of equipment, they patrolled 20 km across flat desert to reach their objec ti ve a nd fi nd a hiding place before first light. Within days, their location was compromised. The Iraqis attacked with armour, and after a fierce firefight the patrol was forced to escape and evade on foot to the Syrian border, 120 km to the nor thw est . T hat first night, in pitch darkness and weather cold enough to freeze diesel fuel, they covered 85 km - farther than two marathons. In the desperate days that followed, though stricken by hypothermia and other injuries, the patrol ' went bal list ic '. Fo ur men were captured. Three died. Only one escaped. But in their wake lay 250 Iraqi dead and wounded. For Andy McNab and the other survivors, however, the worst ordeals were yet to come. Delivered to Baghdad, they were tort ured with a s ava gery and relentlessness for which not even their intensive SAS training had prepared them. This book is a breathtaking account of Special Forces soldiering in all its strength, ingenuity and aggression. It is also a chronic le of super human cou rage , end urance and dark humour in the face of overwhelming odds." Very light browning to pages and edges of text block. Dust jacket has light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds. Very Good/Very Good

317 pp, 9 1/2" H. "We are all aware of the power of money - how it influences our moods, compels us to take risks, and serves as the yardstick of success in societies around the world. Yet because we take the daily reality of money so completely for granted, we seldom question how and why it has come to play such a central role in our lives. (The author) casts aside our workaday assumptions about money and takes the reader on a global quest to uncover a deeper understanding of the relationship between money and humankind. More than a mere history of its subject, this riveting book probes the conceptual origins and evolution of money by examining it through the multiple lenses of disciplines as varied as biology, psychology, anthropology, and theology. 'Coined' is not only a profoundly informative discussion of the concept of money, but it is also an endlessly fascinating and entertaining take on the nature of humanity and the inner workings of the mind."
