" 'If there is no objection, I will take my Division tomorrow and go to Gettysburg.' With these words Major- General Henry Heth set in train the course of events culminating in the titanic clash around the small Pennsylvania town of Gettysburg. On 1 July two Confederate Corps swept towards this strategic crossroads as Federal troops fought a desper a t e d e l aying action. The men of the Army of Northern Virginia were the best in the Confederacy. Under Robert E. Lee they had whipped every Federal force sent against them, and they were confident this time would be no exception. As the firs t at ta c ks s we pt forward full of confidence they were met by a storm of fire. Judging from the determination of their bluecoated adversaries this was going to be no ordinary fight." "(This series) presents the military enthusiast with a new a ng le on th e m ajo r b attlefields of history. 4 Bartholomew, J.G. Revised By Samuel McKee. A LITERARY & HISTORICAL ATLAS OF AMERICA. EVERYMAN'S LIBRARY NO. 553.
London J.M. Dent & Sons 1930 Revised and Enlarged Edition. Hard Cover Good Very Good
242 pp, 6 13/16" H. Map endpapers, decorated title page. Profusely illustrated with colour and b&w maps, plus 8 plates depicting coins. "The transformation, bit by bit, of a wilderness into the category of a Europeanized civilization may be comprehended from a series of maps which shows the ever advancing line of settlement as it first gnawed away the forests of the sea coast, and then after trickling through mountain passes, seeped across the plains to be stopped finally by the Pacific Ocean. Waterways, roads, and more recently, the railroads, have contributed to the movement of the past towards the fulfilment of the present. The following maps portray the expanding movements of new nations as two continents were wrested from a wilderness. The coloured maps locate states, towns, waterways, advancing frontiers, routes of travel, population densities, and industries. The black and white maps, besides those showing battle alignments and military campaigns, contain many specimens of early maps with their quaint antiquarian charm." Includes "A Brief Survey of the Coinage of North and South America" by G.C. Brooke, "A Gazetteer of Towns and Places in America having a Literary or Historic Interest", "Contributions to the Literature of the United States" and an Index. As themes, Hopkins emphsizes the discoverers Cartier and Champlain, the explorers - fur traders Lasalle, and LaVerendrye, the roles of the Church, the martyrs, the early government administrators. They rubbed elbows with Jesuit priests, Indians, Scottish settlers, and English adversaries. Guided by Indians, they worked out canoe routes which eventually stretched nearly 4000 miles. They suffered portages and freeze-ups which today stagger the imagination. They lived on pemmican and wild rice, berries and fish, and risked losing their lives on every trip they made. Here are the stories of the epic fights between the Nor'west and the Hudson's Bay Company's men; the struggles between those living in a new land and their governors thousands of miles away; the feats of such great explorers as Radisson, Fraser, Simpson, and Mackenzie." CHATTANOOGA - A DEATH GRIP ON THE CONFEDERACY., McDonough, James Lee.
20 McDonough, James Lee. CHATTANOOGA - A DEATH GRIP ON THE CONFEDERACY.
Knoxville University of Tennessee Press 1984 0870494252 / 9780870494253 Hard Cover Very Good Very Good+
298 pp, large 8vo (9 1/4" H). B&w photographs, reproductions, maps/battle plans. "In the wake of the bloodshed at Chickamauga, the struggle for Chattanooga became a decisive engagement of the Civil War. McDonough reconstructs the siege and battles as they appeared to both Rebels and Yankees, giving the reader a front-row seat at one of the major dramas in American history. The tale culminates in the complex bid for Missionary Ridge, which ended with the collapse of the Confederate line at its center. Reversing their situation in one final, dramatic hour, Union forces emerged victorious. The Rebels forfeited the advantage offered by the triumph of Chickamauga and now found the tables turned. With Chattanooga in their grasp, the Federals stood in a position to carry the fight deep into the South. The river and railroads both made the city important as a natural passageway that provided the Union with a staging base for military operations. The Rebels, on the other hand, found their railway communications crippled. The Confederacy had earlier been split along the Mississippi River; now it was to be severed by a second line that passed from Nashville to Atlanta via Chattanooga." Very light edge wear, small bump at top edge of front board, minor wrinkling at top/bottom of spine. Dust jacket has minor wrinkling at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds.
