NICHOLAS HILLIARD., Auerbach, Erna.
2 Auerbach, Erna. NICHOLAS HILLIARD.
Boston Boston Book & Art Shop 1964 Hard Cover Very Good Good+ Nicholas Hilliard.
352 pp, small 4to (10" H). Over 200 reproductions of Hilliard's work, mainly in b&w. "This is the first full-length monograph to be written on the life and work of Nicholas Hilliard who lived from 1547 to 1619. The first English-born painter to gain the status of an artist recognised by the English court, he was painter, limner, engraver and goldsmith to Queen Elizabeth I and later to James I, and is kown to have also painted portraits in oil, but it is difficult to attribute particular oil portraits to his hand. Hilliard's importance is not limited by his performance as a miniaturist, for the style of his miniatures had a major influence on the general trend of English painting, and dominated the manner of contemporary English portraiture, both life-size and miniature. (He) was equally eminent as a goldsmith and he practised this craft throughout his life. Much new biographical material has been found which establishes Hilliard as a great Elizabethan." Small bump to top corners of boards, minor browning to page edges. Dust jacket is moderately browned - mainly on inside surface, is price clipped, has light to moderate edge wear/wrinkling - mainly to top/bottom of spine and flap-folds.

4 Bennett, Ethel Hume. A TREASURE SHIP OF OLD QUEBEC.
Toronto Macmillan Company of Canada 1936 First Edition Hard Cover Good Hazel Boswell. Inscribed By Author
266 pp, 8 1/2" H. Blue cloth with black lettering on spine. Pictorial endpapers, b&w illustrations. Most of the front panel of the dust jacket has been laid in the front of the book, but the rest is missing. Signed on title page: "Ethel Hume Bennett, / Christmas 1936 / Toronto." "Good story of a group of young people who succeed in solving the mystery of the disappearance of a model ship, a seal, a miniature and a deed -- all keys to the future happiness of one of the group. Perhaps luck is with them to a surprising degree, but, none the less, the following down of clues is well developed and less left to chance than in the average juvenile mystery yarns. The period is today -- the place Quebec and environs, but a great deal of history is made an essential part of the unravelling of the mystery." Kirkus Review. Book is very slightly cocked, soft crease down spine, light fading/toning to spine and some edges of boards, light edge wear - a little heavier at top/bottom of spine and at corners, light browning to edges of text block, wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, small crease at top corner of pages 1to 6, small tear at bottom of page 3, several very small tears at bottom of page 1 and illustration list page - all tears are archivally taped.

Coteau, (Regina, SK, 1993).
103 pp, 8vo, soft cover. LARGE INSCRIPTION BY AUTHOR ON FREE FRONT ENDPAPER. "Hitler and Stalin stalk these poems. Mick Burrs examines the Fuehrer's love of King Kong. He probes Stalin's relationship with his washerwoman mother, who knew him as her little 'ZoZo'. He confronts the kind of mind that can reduce individuals to political symbols or mere numbers. But tyrants are not only found in political office. He sees a direct connection between the rise of the modern dictator and the phe onomenon of the multiple murderer. 'Every multiple murderer is a miniature tyrant,' Burrs writes; 'he only lacks an enormous arsenal, a loyal following, and a sacred cause'." Interior - clean and tight. Alfred A. Knopf, New York, 1929, Ist edition, no. 1442 of an edition limited to 2000 copies.
225 pp, small 8vo (7 11/16" H), hard cover - no dust jacket. No. 1442 of an limited edition of 2000 copies. "Henry Blake Fuller died on July 28, 1929, just on the eve of this book's publication. It seems almost foregone that he will take his place among those many artists to whom recognition comes too late. The man who wrote such miniature masterpieces as 'The Chevalier of Pensieri-Vani' and 'The Last Refuge' (which Carl Van Vechten has called a forerunner of 'South Wind') is unknown to the world at large. Only a few discerning critics are aware that from his pen came an unparalleled series of novels about Chicago (although this particular one has a European locale); that this quient man was possessed of one of the finest talents that America has known..." 19 Innes, Michael. LORD MULLION'S SECRET.
London Gollancz 1981 057502903X / 9780575029033 First British Edition Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good+
192 pp, 8vo (8" H). "Mullion Castle is a very Stately Home. When the paying customers aren't cluttering up the place, it's the home of the Earl and his family, who include his delightful daughters Patty and Boosie, and dotty Great-aunt Camilla. Also his wife, whose portrait he has now commissioned his old schoolfellow, Charles Honeybath R.A., to paint. Honeybath (is) an astute and inquisitive observer of events; and now he has another intriguing complex of puzzles to ponder over. For instance, who has removed a valuable Hilliard miniature, an ancestral portrait, and substituted an obvious print; and why? Who has removed two of Great-aunt Camilla's water-colours of Italian scenes, and substituted sketches made by her in France; and again, why? And how does it come about that a young undergardener, with the name of Swithin, should posses the family features so strikingly, and be such an attraction to Lady Patience - i.e., Patty? Honeybath addresses himself to these and other teasing problems, while Michael Innes goes his own witty, engaging, tongue-in-cheek way, following what may seem to be a predictable course but surprising us all, Honeybath included, at the finish." Tiny dint on top edge of front board. Dust jacket has minor edge wrinkling, soft crease at top of rear flap.
