6 Armstrong, Keith, Editor. OUR VILLAGE: MEMORIES OF THE DURHAM MINING COMMUNITIES.
Seaham, Durham The People's History 2000 1902527321 / 9781902527321 First Edition Soft Cover Very Good
128 pp, 9 7/16" H. Profusely illustrated with b&w photographs. " 'Our Village' reflects the pains and joys of the people of the Durham Coalfield during a period of drastic change. It is a selection from a series of community publications the author has been involved in over the last 20 years. The general idea behind all these projects has been to let the people speak for themselves in conversation and in their songs and poems. Mixed with over 130 vivid photographs of their local communities, what comes across is a passionate, and often agonising, account of the social upheaval County Durham has experienced. The memories, poems and photographs will interest and enthuse young and old alike. There is gloom aplenty but also wit and vitality in what people have to say. From the banks of the Derwent to the Weardale hills, from the beaches of Easington to proud Westoe, they tell their tales and laugh and cry." 7 Ball, Edward. THE INVENTOR AND THE TYCOON: A GILDED AGE MURDER AND THE BIRTH OF MOVING PICTURES.
New York Doubleday 2013 0385525753 / 9780385525756 Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good+
447 pp, 9 1/2" H. B&w photographs, reproductions. "(T)he compelling saga of an artistic genius, a ruthless railroad tycoon, and a sordid crime of passion. In frontier California 130 years ago, English immigrant Eadweard Muybridge managed to capture time and play it back on a screen, inventing stop-motion photography and moving pictures, breakthrough technologies that ushered in our age of visual media. Bankrolling his endeavor was tycoon (and former California governor) Leland Stanford, who built the west half of the transcontinental railroad and personally drove in the last golden spike. Stanford's particular obsession was whether the four hooves of a running horse ever left the ground all at once, and with Muybridge he found an answer. But personal disaster overshadowed Muybridge's remarkable achievements. A visionary artist, and technically brilliant, he was also a murderer." Very light wrinkling at bottom of spine. Dust jacket has minor edge wrinkling at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, minor rubbing.

JUNO: CANADIANS AT D-DAY, JUNE 6, 1944., Barris, Ted. Foreword by John Keegan.
8 Barris, Ted. Foreword by John Keegan. JUNO: CANADIANS AT D-DAY, JUNE 6, 1944.
Thomas Allen, Toronto, 2004.
311 pp, large 8vo (9 1/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0887621333 Map endpapers, b&w photographs, maps/battle plans. "On June 6, 1944, nearly 15,000 Canadians - at sea, in the air, and on the ground - joined the long-anticipated D-Day inva sion of Nazi-occupied Europe on the Normandy beaches. The piece of ground on which the Canadian fought so hard against heavily armed and entrenched German troops was code-named 'Juno'. On that day, the Canadians fought their way farther inland t h a n any other Allied troops. For Canada, this was an extraordinary moment of bravery, sacrifice, and coming of age in the nation's history....(This book) tells the story of Juno in the voices of the men who were there - young farmers from Manit ob a an d Saskatchewan, fresh-faced high-school graduates from Ontario, workers from mines and factories in the Maritimes, and eager recruits from Quebec and Newfoundland....In what might be described as 'Canada's longest day', we join the action ho ur by ho ur, minute by minute. We take to the skies with the airmen who flew fighters and bombers over the beaches. We ply the Channel with the sailors who swept the waters of German mines and navigated landing craft to the French coast line . We go in wit h troops who leapt off those craft into waters bristling with booby-trapped obstacles and raked by machinegun fire to establish a foothold on Juno Beach. Ted Barris has interviewed hundreds of veterans to piece together one of Canada's pro udes t day s , and one of the most significant battles of our time." THE SMUG MINORITY., Berton, Pierre.
9 Berton, Pierre. THE SMUG MINORITY.
Toronto McClelland & Stewart 1968 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good-
160 pp, 8 3/4" H. "This is a book about freedom - and the lack of it - in Canada: freedom from useless and often degrading toil; freedom from want and freedom from ignorance. It is Berton's thesis, documented by public statments made over the past generation, that a smug minority of business and political leaders has conspired to inhibit that freedom. The author indicts his fellow countrymen for failing to invest in human beings in the same way that they invest in power plants, highways, and gold mines. His researches into poverty in Canada and into the inequalities of the education system will shock a good many readers just as his theories on work and leisure will enrage others raised in the Calvinist ethic. The book ranges over a wide variety of topics: the hippie movement in Toronto's Yorkville village - the author's personal experiences in a Yukon mining camp - the future of educational television in Canada - and the Chamber of Commerce's abortive 'Operation Freedom' campaign. But always Berton hammers on his central theme - that the nation has been held back by an inbred power-elite: 'Selfish, narrow, short-sighted men unable to grasp the vision of the future, imprisoned by a bookkeeping attitude to life, creeping silently and blindly along at the tag end of the parade of progress'." Small stamp mark on free front endpaper. Dust jacket has light wrinkling at top of spine, light to moderate rubbing - mostly on rear panel, one small edge tear archivally taped.

10 Chidsey, Donald Barr. VALLEY FORGE.
Crown, New York, 1959.
190 pp, 8vo (8 1/2" H), hard cover in dust jacket. B&w illustrations. "A vividly exciting, on-the-scene account of the most crucial winter of the American Revolution. You accompany the ragged, hungry American troops as they leave Philadelphia to spend the winter at Valley Forge. You struggle up the hill, help clear the underbrush, and fell the trees to build huts and fortifications. You endure the cold and the hunger, the sickness and the boredom, the lack of the most rudimentary convenie nces, and you marvel at the spirit that keeps your fellow Americans from deserting. In contrast, you see the relative luxury of the circumstances enjoyed by the British troops in Philadelphia. Then you see the start of the moves that wil l u l t i m a t e ly result in victory: the near disruption of the British fleet at Philadelphia by the world's first submarine and floating mines; experienced foreign officers joining the American cause; the drilling of troops for effective comba t, an d th e de cl ar at ion of war by France. Finally, you share in the long awaited triumph when camp is disbanded and the American army chases the British across New Jersey...." 12 Cremony, John C. LIFE AMONG THE APACHES.
New York Indian Head Books 1991 0880296526 / 9780880296526 Facsimile Reprint. Hard Cover Near Fine Very Good+
322 pp, 8vo (8 1/2" H). Facsimile reprint of 1868 edition. From the Introduction: "We have never striven to make ourselves intelligently acquainted with (the various tribes occupying the vast region which extends from the Colorado river on the west, to the settlements of Texas on the east, and from Taos in New Mexico to Durango in the Mexican Republic). Nearly all that relates to them is quite as uncertain and indefinite to our comprehension as that which obtains in the center of Africa. Those who were best informed on the matter, and had given it the closest attention, were, at the time - most unfortunately - the least capable of imparting their information; while those who were ignorant of the subject have been the most forward to give the results of their fragmentary gleanings. If this volume shall have the effect of bettering our present deplorable Indian policy, by letting in some light, it will accomplish the author's object." The author was "Interpreter to the U.S. Boundary Commission, under the Hon. John R. Bartlett, in 1849, '50 and '51, and late Major of California Volunteer Cavalry, operating in Arizona, New Mexico, Texas, and Western Arkansas." Dust jacket has a few areas of very minor edge wrinkling.

STEAM NAVIGATION AND ITS RELATION TO THE COMMERCE OF CANADA AND THE UNITED STATES., Croil, James.
13 Croil, James. STEAM NAVIGATION AND ITS RELATION TO THE COMMERCE OF CANADA AND THE UNITED STATES.
Toronto Coles 1973 Facsimile Edition. Hard Cover Fine Very Good
381 pp, 8 5/8" H. Burgundy cloth with black title block, gilt lettering/banding on spine, gilt lettering/banding on front board - one of the Coles Canadian Collection. B&w photographs, drawings, reproductions, maps. A facsimile of the edition published by William Briggs, Toronto, 1898. "(This) is an exciting study of the development of steam navigation in Canada. In tracing the transition from sailing ships to the paddle-steamer, and from the paddle-steamer to the revolutionary screw-propeller, the author writes with the kind of imaginative insight that brings back to life a past age of challenge. One of the delightful features of this book is the vivid study of shipping on the Great Lakes. Croil's account of the lake ships catches the imagination with its comprehensive study of past glories: LaSalle's schooner of ten tons, whose journey was halted by the Niagara Falls; the first lake steamer, the 'Frontenac' (1816), said to be the best example of naval architecture in North America; the 'Queen Charlotte' (1818), which carried passengers from Prescott to the stage-coach station at the head of the Bay of Quinte; the 'Gore', built at Niagara in 1838, which was one of the earliest passenger steamers on Georgian Bay; and the 'Bruce Mines', which carried copper ore on Lake Huron. The reader will be equally delighted by the large number of illustrations Croil provides. (They) present a glorious pictorial record of early shipping, showing the curious Miller Twin-Boat of 1788, C.P.R.'s astonishingly modern 'Empress' line of 1891, the Ottawa river steamer, the 'Sovereign', and the 'Passport', a mail paddle-steamer which sailed from Lake Ontario to Montreal." Dust jacket has minor edge rubbing, very tiny tear at bottom of spine.

JOHN PRINCE: A COLLECTION OF DOCUMENTS., Douglas, R. Alan, edited and with introduction by. Foreword by William G. Davis.
15 Douglas, R. Alan, edited and with introduction by. Foreword by William G. Davis. JOHN PRINCE: A COLLECTION OF DOCUMENTS.
Toronto The Champlain Society 1980 Limited Edition Hard Cover Very Good+
229 pp, large 8vo (9 3/4" H) - red cloth with gilt lettering/crest on spine. No. 844 of Twelve Hundred and Fifty Copies of this Volume prnted for the Champlain Society. B&w photographs, maps, reproductions. "John Prince was undoubtedly one of the most colourful individuals to reside in Upper Canada during the half century that preceded Confederation. (The mythology that had grown up around his memory in southwestern Ontario identified him as the product of an illegal marriage between George IV and Maria Anne Fitzherbert.) His eventful career as an attorney, politician, soldier, entrepreneur, and jurist caused him to become a legend in his own lifetime both in Essex County, where he resided at Sandwich from his arrival in 1833 until 1860, and in Sault Ste Marie where he spent the last ten years of his life as Judge of the Algoma District. In the legislature his independence and erratic individualism soon earned him the reputation of a political maverick. Business interests and entrepreneurial instincts attracted him to railway and banking ventures as early as the 1830s. Individualist and eccentric though he was, John Prince was still very much a man of his age." Minor wear at corners.

THROUGH GERMAN EYES: THE BRITISH AND THE SOMME 1916., Duffy, Christopher.
16 Duffy, Christopher. THROUGH GERMAN EYES: THE BRITISH AND THE SOMME 1916.
London Weidenfeld & Nicolson 2006 0297846892 / 9780297846895 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good
383 pp, large 8vo (9 7/16" H). B&w photographs, maps, drawings. ""The Battle of the Somme has an enduring legacy, the image of 'lions led by donkeys' established by Alan Clark; of brave British soldiers sent to their deaths by incompetent generals. but, as Duffy reveals in this groundbreaking study, this was never the German view; indeed, the Germans had great respect for the British forces. The evidence for this is both copious and unfamiliar, discovered in archived official papers, histories, memoirs and letters, and most revealingly of all in the results of the interrogation of British prisoners of war. The picture that emerges is a far cry from 'Blackadder'. The questioning by German intelligence officers was more systematic and detailed than that employed by their British counterparts. It was also more open-ended, encouraging those captured to speak freely and at length whilst still in shock from combat and capture. Their recollections are of unique interest because of their immediacy, separated from the event by a matter of hours or a few days at most, rather than being contaminated by the passing of time and outside opinion. This is not another of the number of comprehensive histories of the Battle of the Somme. Instead it looks at aspects of the battle from the German point of view, showing in particular the Germans' perception of the British performance and mentality in the course of that long struggle. From the German point of view, the battle was a disaster. And the fact that every British soldier taken prisoner still believed Britian would win the war gave German intelligence teams a fair indication that their empire would go down to defeat." Minor cigarette odor, very light browning to edges of textblock, faint thumb print at fore-edge of free front endpaper. Dust jacket has light edge wrinkling - mainly at top of spine.

145 pp, 4to (11 1/4" H). Profusely illustrated with b&w photographs, maps, diagrams. SIGNED BY AUTHOR ON TITLE PAGE. "Silver Centre was one of Canada's celebrated mining camps. It discovered millions of dollars in silver ore (when silver's price averaged 50 cents an ounce) and probably has as much mineral wealth today in its unexamined Keewatin ground for some future economic development. But most importantly, in terms of Ontario's social history , this Silver Centre story represents the way of life for many of the people living in northern Ontario during the early years of (the twenieth) century. The story follows in detail the mining prospectors of 1907 - their silver discoveries; the early mines - their success and failures; the depressing World War I years; then rebirth with the mother lode discovery in 1920 and its climactic decade of phenomenal silver treasure; finally, the inevitable exhaustion of known deposits. Falling metal prices discourage continued searches. Mines close - sudden abandonment. This particular drama of prospectors and developers struggling with the Precambrian rocks is a constant, unifying theme. (This) is the story of a mining community and its people, of fellowship and stubborn pleasure." Very light edge wear, previous owner's name/date in ink on free front endpaper and embossed blind stamp on half-title page. A previous owner has amended the map of Silver Centre, 1924, adding the location of two rinks and a ball park, extending the left side of the map to show the rail yard, railway station and loading ramp, and filling in some squares indicating the location of buildings with red ink. Very light browning to edges of text block. Dust jacket has a few small tears (archivally taped) and chips; moderate wrinkling along top edge; light browning - moderate on spine; light soiling and rubbing; small light stain, partial cup mark on front panel; small area of tiny perforations on rear panel; book color offset on inside surface; now in a mylar sleeve.
