DEFENDERS OF PAKISTAN., Amin, Mohamed; Quraishy, Masud; Willetts, Duncan; Tetley, Brian.
1 Amin, Mohamed; Quraishy, Masud; Willetts, Duncan; Tetley, Brian. DEFENDERS OF PAKISTAN.
Midland Counties, (Leicester, 1988).
200 pp, 4to (12 3/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. Profusely illustrated with color photographs. "Few nations in history came into the world so empty-handed as Pakistan. Born at the stroke of midnight on 14 August 1947, it's bounded in the east by India, in the north by China and the Soviet Union and in the west by Afghanistan and in the south-west by Iran. More recently a simmering war - perhaps the most astonishing one of all - goes on at heights of more than 20,000 feet, in the great H imalayan and Karakoram mountain ranges of northern Pakistan. On its North-West Frontier, the Afghans of the Soviet puppet-regime in Kabul raid and harass Pakistan border posts and villages in the Hindu Kush and the mountains of the famous Khyber Pass. They meet indomitable defence. Yet all it had at the start was courage - and the formidable legacy of the martial Muslims of Asia: pride, discipline, efficiency and unquenchable faith. Out of this came inspired performance. This is the full, remarkable story of the bravest of the brave...the story of how a frail young nation, born amid tumult and bloodshed, threatened on all sides, transformed itself into a major fighting machine." Faint cigarette odor. Dust jacket has mino rrubbing, light edge creasing along top edge, tiny tear and light wear at top of spine. VG+/VG

3 Bailey, Catherine. THE SECRET ROOMS: A TRUE GOTHIC MYSTERY.
London Viking 2012 0670917559 / 9780670917556 Hard Cover Near Fine Very Good+
466 pp, 9 1/2" H. B&w photographs, floor plans, map, family tree. "At 6 a.m. on 21 April 1940 John, the 9th Duke of Rutland, and one of Britain's wealthiest men, ended his days, virtually alone, lying on a makeshift bed in a dank, cramped suite of rooms in the servants' quarters of his own home, Belvoir Castle. For weeks, as his health deteriorated, his family, his servants - even the King's doctor - had pleaded with him to come out, but he had refused. After his death, his son and heir, Charles, the 10th Duke of Rutland, ordered that the rooms be locked up and they remained untouched for sixty years. What lay behind this extraordinary set of circumstances? (The author) unravels a complex and compelling tale of love, honour and betrayal, played out in the grand salons of Britain's stately homes at the turn of the twentieth century, and on the battlefields of the Western Front." Dust jacket has minor edge wrinkling, minor rubbing on rear panel.

THE RAILWAYS PAINTINGS OF DON BRECKON., Breckon, Don. Introduction by Roger Malone.
6 Breckon, Don. Introduction by Roger Malone. THE RAILWAYS PAINTINGS OF DON BRECKON.
Greenwich Editions, London, 1995.
80 pp, oblong 8vo (8 7/16" H x 10 1/2" D), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0862880505 Profusely illustrated with colour reproductions, b&w drawings. "Admirers of Don Breckon's unerring blend of a faultless eye for detail and an irresistible nosta lgia for the era of steam will need no prompting to acquire and treasure this beautifully produced book. It is all here: the shapely majesty of the locomotives (with the emphasis on the Great Western, but with all the Big Four well repres e n t e d ) , s e t in landscapes of a 'classical Constable calmness'; the stations, accurate in every evocative period detail; the hidden rituals of the engine shed; the porters, signalmen and passengers who were privileged to play their part in t hi s gl or io us p a no ra ma. The artist himself has provided the commentary, and Roger Malone has written an introduction full of delightful revelations of the life and work of a painter who, he says, 'reminds us of what we are missing in a worl d t ha t h as dis mis sed c har act er and individuality in favour of streamlined efficiency'." Previous owner's small stamp on front pastedown. Dust jacket has very minor rubbing, small area of delamination at bottom edge of front panel. Very G ood+ /Ve ry G ood

There never was a time, before or since, when so many Americans danced. They were times when, no matter where you lived, there was a vast, cavernous ballroom nearby, its ubiquitous ceiling fixture a gigantic rotating sphere whose fragments of mirror splashed the ballroom with shifting, moving splinters of softly - colored lights. And those great bands! Who can forget them? Glenn Miller...Tommy Dorsey...Benny Goodman...Chick Webb...Jimmy Lunceford...Jan Savitt...Artie Shaw...and all the others! It's all here, inside these covers: The true stories of those great bands, with real photos of the men who shaped the sounds, who blazed the trails for all the big bands of today...assembled and recorded so they may not be lost to posterity. Nowhere, up until now, could the American reader find, in one volume, the warm, wonderful, exciting stories of the big dance bands...told by a musician-scholar. Open this book and you are with the men who were part of 'the golden age of the bands' - at a time when ALL America danced !" 144 pp, large 8vo (9 1/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. B&w photographs, drawings, tables. "Despite considerable parental disapproval (M.F. Higson) achieved his ambition to become a Fireman.
