376 pp, large 8vo (9 3/4" H). Profusely illustrated with b&w drawings, color plates. "(N)ot only a military history of every regiment which was first formed in London, but also describes the uniforms they wore and the various changes and modifications introduced from time to time during more than three hundred years of service. The story of these many regiments is of absorbing interest, whether it is about volunteers, territorials or regular troops, and is enhanced by sixty-six full page illustrations in line in the text, eight in sepia, and twelve superb plates in full colour. There is also an exhaustive index to the many regiments, the date of their formation, colour of their uniforms, and many other details, such as how they got their names, and nicknames. DESPERATE SIEGE: THE BATTLE OF HONG KONG., Ferguson, Ted.
5 Ferguson, Ted. DESPERATE SIEGE: THE BATTLE OF HONG KONG.
Toronto Doubleday Canada 1980 0385146949 / 9780385146944 Hard Cover Very Good Good
252 pp, 8 1/2" H. B&w photographs, maps. "On Christmas Day 1941, Hong Kong, 'the Gibraltar of the Orient', crumbled under the massive onslaught of crack Japanese invasion troops. The Winnipeg Grenadiers and the Royal Rifles of Canada, ill equipped and unblooded, fought side by side with four other British Commonwealth units to defend the Crown colony. For eighteen days, the heavily outnumbered soldiers surpassed all expectations, winning lasting honour on the battlefield before being marched off to spend four and a half years in Japanese prison camps. They had endured constant air strikes, artillery barrages, vicious assaults, and hand-to-hand combat. Their heroic sacrifice is made all the more tragic when one realizes that, from the start, they were considered expendable. Base on interviews with survivors of the battle and the POW cages, (this) is a powerful tale of human courage in the face of impossible odds." Light wrinkling at bottom of spine. Dust jacket is price-clipped, has light to moderate edge wear at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, several small tears archivally taped, light water marks on lower inside of flap-folds, light fading to spine colour.

Then came chloroform, antiseptics and the reforms of Florence Nightingale; and with the twentieth century new achievements, and a bold new plan to weld the different hospitals into a comprehensive s y s t e m . . . .(Mr. Ives') book fills a gap in our social history. 10 Jackson, Robert. AT WAR WITH THE BOLSHEVIKS.
Tandem, London, (1974).
304 pp, mass market paperback. B&w photos, maps. "In March 1918, when the infant Soviet Government signed a separate peace treaty with Germany, the stage was set for the Allied War of Intervention against the Bolshevik regime. Men, many of whom h ad survived the bloody massacres of the Western Front, found themselves pitched into a dirty, cruel conflict they did not understand. This is the story of British, Japanese, American and French troops in Siberia, sweeping the Bolsheviks from t h e a p proaches to Vladivostock in a series of savage actions; of the Royal Scots and the 339th U.S. Infantry, fighting for their lives in the snow-clad forests of North Russia against a tenacious enemy; of No. 47 Squadron R.A.F., locked in bitt er c om b at w ith the embryo Red Air Force over the steppes of South Russia; of the Green Howards, the Royal Fusiliers, the Hampshire and Middlesex Regiments, the French Chasseurs and others, fighting step by step along the Dvina and Vaga Rivers and th e s tr ate gic railways of North Russia; of the little Royal Navy coastal motor boats that shattered the Red Fleet in Kronstadt. It is a story of great heroism, but also of mutiny and murder as White Russian troops turned on the Allies and def ecte d to th e Re ds i n ever-increasing numbers." London B.T. Batsford 1947 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good
184 pp, 9" H. B&w and colour plates, including frontispiece, b&w floor plans. "James Lees-Milne sets out to show of what the work of Robert Adam and his three brothers really consisted, from what sources it was derived, what contemporary architects were affected by it, and what its influence was overseas. Using information from letters, diariees and records of the times, some of it hitherto unpublished, (he) traces the biographies of the Brothers Adam from their beginnings in Scotland to their eventual position as the most fashionable and influential architects and designers in Britain. He then proceeds to a critical examination of their work in England, Scotland and Ireland - their town houses and country houses, squares and terraces, ceilings, furniture and monuments. Next, there is an assessment of the work of the Adam's contemporaires and rivals, among them Wyatt, Taylor, Holland and Leverton; and a succeeding section deals with the Adam influence as it spread to Ireland, America, Russia and Sweden. A final chapter gives a short account of the lives and individual contributions of the Adams' collaborators - artists and craftsmen such as Chippendale, Angelica Kauffmann, Zucchi, Joseph Rose and Biagio Rebecca. Very light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, three light edge/corner bumps. Dust jacket has browning at top edge of flaps, light edge wear/wrinkling at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, several very small tears at top of spine, very small red ink stain on front panel.

Toronto Ryerson Press 1949 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Good-
289 pp, 8 3/4" H. B&w plates. "(T)he story of Southwestern Ontario as reflected in the columns of 'The London Free Press' for the last hundred years. By its very nature a newspaper is a diary of the times, a mirror held to the contemporary scene in its various aspects - local, national and international. Orlo Miller, a former staff member of (the paper), having spent several years in research, here presents a lively and readable account of what has taken place in the last ten decades. Here is no collection of dry statistical data but rather real, living, flesh-and-blood people taking part in historic incidents as reavealed in the yellowed columns. The growth of London from a struggling backwoods village to the metropolis of the smiling countryside of Western Ontario and the parallel expansion of 'The London Free Press' from a tiny weekly, struggling for survival, to one of Canada's leading daily newspapers form the twin themes from which Orlo Miller has skilfully spun a single story." Light wrinkling and light fading (1/4") at bottom of spine, very light fading to spine color. Dust jacket has light to moderate edge wear/wrinkling, small piece missing at top of spine, a few tiny and small edge chips, light rubbing/soiling, old tape at inside top/bottom edges, faint water stain at bottom of spine.

(This book) chronicles that little army, the British Regular Army of 1914: how it came to be in France at all, the long years of intrigue and preparation that preceded its departure, and what happened to it in four short months of total war. ALLIED INTERVENTION IN RUSSIA 1918-1919 AND THE PART PLAYED BY CANADA., Swettenham, John.
19 Swettenham, John. ALLIED INTERVENTION IN RUSSIA 1918-1919 AND THE PART PLAYED BY CANADA.
Toronto Ryerson Press 1967 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good
315 pp, 8 3/4" H. B&w photographs, maps. "Allied intervention (in the Russian Civil War) took place in three main theatres; Northern and Southern Russia as well as Siberia. Canadians served in all these places - in fact Canada was the major Commonwealth contributor to the intervention in Siberia - and a superficial account of the events and their political implications is contained in the official history of the Canadian Army in the First World War. John Swettenham, who drafted the Canadian account, now treats the subject in depth and in international perspective. Official British records for the period (were at the time of printing) still witheld from scholars; those in Ottawa, however, are not and these have been consulted to throw new light on the motives and actions of the intervening powers. In this critical assessment the story of the Allied operations in Russia has been written against the double background of the issues and events of the Russian Civil War itself and of the international intrigues and rivalries of the erstwhile Allies; thus the inverventionists' role can be seen in a broad perspective. The reasons for failure - so that Bolshevik Russia emerged 'thoroughly militarised - bitterly hostile' are plainly given." Minor wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, minor edge wear. Dust jacket has light edge wear/wrinkling, minor soiling/rubbing, a few tiny scratches on front panel.

Under the heading of its parent regiment, each battalion formed under the Territorial system is recorded, together with its lineage and details of w a r s e r vice. As a pictorial history of the Territorial infantryman, the book is superbly illustrated with, in the most part, hitherto unpublished material. The numerous uniforms worn in the early days are shown in great detail, also much of th e eq u ip me nt used throughout a period covering 126 years of service."
