New York Philosophical Library 1953 Second Impression. Hard Cover Good Good J.W. Wood and R.A. Smith.
205 pp, 8 3/4" H. B&w photographs, drawings, tables. "Here, described with enthusiasm and authority, is not only the whole history of rocket development from the days of the first discovery of an explosive mixture before the birth of Christ, but also the latest information on the harnessing of the tremendous new propellants available today, which may soon make journeys into space a commonplace of human life. Both (authors) are technical experts in their own fields. While their working hours are concerned with terrestrial problems, their scientific curiosity and knowledge are also beamed into the outer reaches of the Ether. They have accordingly produced a series of blueprints for the construction of an artificial satellite freely revolving in its own orbit around the Earth, and for the great liners which will take off from it on their flashing journeys to starry destinations in our own solar system and even, perhaps, beyond. There are nearly 100 (illustrations): historical records of early experiments, magnificent modern photographs of the latest achievements, and in addition a series of exciting drawings, specially made for the book, of space stations and space ships, which not only fire the imagination, but are precise in every detail." ISBN 189633203X "Gemma Johnstone's intimate charms have earned her just about every material comfort a woman about town could wish for. But when her latest admirer expires in full flight of physical affection, she must suddenly face the realities of being middle-aged, single, and without further material prospects. Temporary solace appars in the form of Helen Chisholm, a bed-ridden older woman who is in need of care and companionship while her redoubtable daughter goes away on a two-week Caribbean cruise. The prospect of tending an old lady tucked away in the tower of a sp r a w l i n g V ictorian mansion is hardly a tantalising one for a woman of Gemma's worldly charms. But as Gemma and Helen get to know each other, they form an unlikely bond and discover to their mutual surprise that their lives will never again b e th e sa me . A n yo ne familiar with the works of British writer E.F. Benson will immediately find themselves on familiar literary ground, probing the oft-fragile veneer of morality that separates respectability from the scandalous. Only here, t he se tt ing is a co nt emp orary one - Westmount, the genteel hillside environs of English-speaking Montreal's upper middle class. 'The Mice Will Play' is a deft comedy of contemporary manners (and the lack thereof). Written in Edward O. Phil lip s' f ast -pac ed, urb ane sty le, it paints an often hilarious picture of what happens when we surrender ourselves to the unpredictable twists of fate and human nature." IN MY GRANDFATHER'S HOUSE., Poortvliet, Rien. Calligraphy by Diane Lynch.
17 Poortvliet, Rien. Calligraphy by Diane Lynch. IN MY GRANDFATHER'S HOUSE.
Harry N. Abrams, New York, 1988, first American edition.
240 pp, oblong (10 1/4" H x 12 1/8" D) hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0810911264 Beautifully illustrated in colour throughout. "(T)he fascinating saga, told with pen and brush, of a rural family in old Holland - the Poortvliets - going back ten generations to Cornelis Adriaensz, who died in 1649. Characteristically evocative, Poortvliet's work is remarkable in its ability to touch us. With equal skill he conveys the coziness of a comfortable house set in a bleak and brooding snowy landsc ape and the light-hearted revelry of a winter carnival. (This book) does not conjure up a romantic vision of the past - the Dutch countryside was not all tulips and windmills. There was hardship and hard work, like that of the young cowherd se e n h ere - an eight-year-old boy whose long and lonely day began at four o'clock in the morning and only ended when he returned home at six o'clock in the evening. We learn of the many Dutch families in the early days who endured the deaths of fi ve , t en , or more babies, and of their joy in those that survived. We even learn of such nocturnal annoyances as the families of noisy mice that shared the straw mattresses of the country folk. (The author's) colorful heritage, traced back to th e 1 60 0s , w hile it does not include rich and famous people, does include characters and stories to rival those of a soap opera in their intricacy and human interest. Those accounts are based on ancient documents such as birth and death certifica tes and ch urch records, some of which are reproduced. Exploring his own roots, Poortvliet captures the beauty in the faces and in the lives of the country people of Holland as he illuminates their odyssey into modern times." Light edge wear wit h a few tiny dint s on edges of boards, previous owner's signed bookplate on freont free endpaper, minor rubbing on boards. 176 pp, 9" H. B&w illustrations. "Was little Jack Horner a squatter? 'Baa, baa, Black Sheep' a bleat about taxation? What did Jack and Jill do on that hill? Who was Mary? And why was she contrary? This witty and ingenious book delves into the hidden meanings of the most innocuous-sounding nursery rhymes, revealing a seething subtext of sexual innuendo, religious hatred and political subversion. (It) provides a fascinating history lesson, teases out some alarming Freudian interpretations, and makes entertaining connections to contemporary political and popular culture." 200 pp, 11 1/8" H. Profusely illustrated in colour. "Before Shrek made it big on the silver screen, there was William Steig's 'SHREK!', a book about an ordinary ogre who leaves his swampy childhood home to go out and see the world. Ordinary, that is, if a foul and hideous being who ends up marrying the most stunningly ugly princess on the surface of the planet is what you consider ordinary. 'SHREK!' can be found in this collection of six modern picture-books classics by Steig, along with stories concerning creatures ordinary and extraordinary - from Irene, a brave and loving little girl who must battle a howling blizzard, to Spinky, a boy who is so completely annoyed by his family that he no longer has any use for the human race. Gathered together here for the first time, these entertaining stories will delight fans of Steig, both old and new." Unpaginated, 10" H, hardcover with pictorial front board - no dust jacket. "H.L. Stephens (1824-1882, originally from Philadelphia, later working in New York) was a very good illustrator who has been accorded faint praise by the critics. The reaso n is largely the result of the poor reproductions in which his work appeared. That is why this edition of 'A Frog he Would A-Wooing Go' uses the original drawings by Stephens, which are at the moment in private hands at Harvard University, r a t h e r t han the reproductive lithographs of 1865 which were made from them. The difference is striking; for these drawings compare with the works of Stephens' far more celebrated contemporary John Tenniel, whose 'Alice in Wonderland', Londo n , 19 65 , fi rs t s aw the light of day in the same twelve months." 15 full page monotone illustrations with verses underneath.
