2 Cremony, John C. LIFE AMONG THE APACHES.
New York Indian Head Books 1991 0880296526 / 9780880296526 Facsimile Reprint. Hard Cover Near Fine Very Good+
322 pp, 8vo (8 1/2" H). Facsimile reprint of 1868 edition. From the Introduction: "We have never striven to make ourselves intelligently acquainted with (the various tribes occupying the vast region which extends from the Colorado river on the west, to the settlements of Texas on the east, and from Taos in New Mexico to Durango in the Mexican Republic). Nearly all that relates to them is quite as uncertain and indefinite to our comprehension as that which obtains in the center of Africa. Those who were best informed on the matter, and had given it the closest attention, were, at the time - most unfortunately - the least capable of imparting their information; while those who were ignorant of the subject have been the most forward to give the results of their fragmentary gleanings. If this volume shall have the effect of bettering our present deplorable Indian policy, by letting in some light, it will accomplish the author's object." The author was "Interpreter to the U.S. Boundary Commission, under the Hon. John R. Bartlett, in 1849, '50 and '51, and late Major of California Volunteer Cavalry, operating in Arizona, New Mexico, Texas, and Western Arkansas." Dust jacket has a few areas of very minor edge wrinkling.

"Heriot went to Quebec in 1792 as a civil servant and became deputy postmaster general of Canada in 1799. Until 1816 he remained in Canada, travelling at least as far west as Niagara Falls, perhaps Detroit, and to some extent in the United States, sketching along the way. His legacy - his water-colors and this book, an unsurpassed intimate history of 'the lakes, the rivers, and cataracts, the villages, farm-houses, and townships of Canada'. Although British reviewers of the day were unimpressed by richly detailed descriptions of a mere colony, the extent and precision of Heriot's account is a virtue one hundred and sixty years later. He wrote at length of each of the major waterways in Upper and Lower Canada which were, as James Talman points out in his introduction, 'of first importance in the life of the people as a means of travel and a source of water power'. And his sketches of buildings, particularly in Quebec, are invaluable since many of those buildings were already falling into ruin when Heriot saw them." Very minor wrinkling at top og spine. Dust jacket has very light wrinkling at top of spine and flap-folds, minor rubbing. Slipcase has very light edge wear/rubbing, tiny slight puncture on one side, slight bump at top of spine.

5 Tuchman, Barbara. Introduced by Margaret MacMillan. THE ZIMMERMANN TELEGRAM.
London Folio Society 2004 Hard Cover Very Good+
225 pp, large 8vo (9 1/2" H), bound in cloth and pictorial boards - in slipcase. B&w photographs. "In January 1917 the German Foreign Minister, Arthur Zimmermann, sent a cable to his Ambassador in Washington for transmission to the German Ambassador in Mexico. In it, (he) announced that Germany was going to start unrestricted submarine warfare against all shipping, Allied or neutral, in the Atlantic. He then made a startling and audacious proposal: the German Ambassador was to offer the Mexican government an alliance directed against the United States and, furthermore, to ask the Mexicans to contact the Japanese to see if they could be persuaded to switch sides (Japan was on the Allied side in the First World War). British Intelligence decoded the telegram and passed it on to the Americans, with momentous consquences." Very small printing ink mark on plain page 2. Small minor bump on slipcase.
