1 SO MANY: A FOLIO DEDICATED TO ALL WHO SERVED WITH RAF BOMBER COMMAND, 1939-45.
Macmillan, [Toronto], (1995).
276 pp, folio, HC. "The central theme is the courage of thousands of men - most of them from ordinary backgrounds in Britain and the Empire, but including important groups from countries overrun by Germany - who survived one of the most severe and prolonged periods of physical danger and mental strain any group of people has ever been asked to bear. Over 55,500 of them were killed. The principal content allocates ten pages to each of 25 aircrew, who, often straight from school, served as pi lots, navigators, bomb-aimers, signallers, flight engineers and air gunners in Bomber Command in World War 2. Each has a biography, a photograph of his memorabilia, a handwritten reminiscence and a painted silhouette showing him as he i s i n 1 9 9 4 . Thus he will make his mark in history, and you, the reader, will be able to judge what manner of man he was. You will also be able to decide how much you owe to men like him for the fact that today Europe is entirely free, and no t e ns la v ed u nd er a single master-race." Ribbon marker. THE GOLDEN PRINCESS., Baron, Alexander.
5 Baron, Alexander. THE GOLDEN PRINCESS.
Cape, London, 1954, first edition.
402 pp, 8vo (8" H), hard cover in dust jacket. "When Hernan Cortez landed in Mexico in 1519 he met an Indian slave girl, Marina, whose beauty and intelligence destined her to a remarkable career. Few records of her life exist, but she is still a l egendary figure among the people of Mexico. The background of her story is one of the most astonishing adventures in history, the conquest of the mighty Aztec empire by four hundred white men; an episode replete with the ingredients of roman c e - N a ture's barriers surmounted, feats of arms, fantastic stratagems, enemies overcome. In this novel, Alexander Baron sees Marina and Cortes not only as lovers but as adversaries in a terrible struggle. Cortes, one of history's classical h er oe s , i s de picted in all his power and glory, but the flaw in him, the seed of human weakness in the 'man of destiny', is laid bare. Against him stands Marina, primitive and untaught, but growing, with experience, in mental and moral stature; aw ake ni ng t o som ething to which her lover is blind - the human search for good - so that a conflict between them becomes inevitable. (The author's) approach to his theme is avowedly romantic. He believes that some aspects of the nature and dest iny of man ar e most truthfully revealed by the romantic vision. His novel abounds with big, vivid characters; but each of them is examined with insight, and is a unique, complex human being." Small bump to fore-edge of front board, one ver y sma ll c orn er b ump, v ery l ight edge wear and slight fading at top/bottom edge of spine. Dust jacket has fading to spine color small closed tear with crease at top of front panel - archivally taped, light edge wear/wrinkling - mainly at top/ bottom of s pine , ver y sma ll water/ dye stain at front bottom/inside edge, one tiny scuff on front panel, minor soiling. Cambridge Worth Press 2011 1849310262 / 9781849310260 First Edition Hard Cover Fine Very Good+ Louis Wain.
256 pp, square small 10to (10 1/4" H x 10 1/4" D). Profusely illustrated with colour and b&w reproductions of Wain's art. "During their heyday, in the time before the First World War, Louis Wain's cats, dressed as humans, portrayed (the) stylish Edwardian world having fun; at restaurants and tea parties, going to the Races and the Seaside, celebrating Christmas and Birthdays, and disporting themselves with exuberant games of tennis, bowls, cricket and football. This is a titillating world of cats at play, uninhibited and slightly dangerous, with most group activities likely to turn into mishap, mayhem and catastrophe. This is Wain's world, funny, edgy and animated; a whole cat world. The first comprehensive exhibition of Wain's work was held at the Victoria and Albert Museum in London in 1972 and, since then, Louis Wain has steadily become more fashionable and collected worldwide. This new biography will show many images for the first time ever, amongst 300 plates of richness and variety, all of which are reproduced faithfully from the original artwork." Dust jacket has tiny wrinkles at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, a few slight wrinkles on front flap

In this book you will find brief biographies and selections from the writings of twenty-eight Saints who have become widely known or who represent the characteristic mentalities of various bands of Christian brot h e r s . T h e se famous saints are all strikingly individual. They differ in temperament, race and education. But among the things they have in common is that they are teachers par excellence. 14 Dillon, Richard. WE HAVE MET THE ENEMY. OLIVER HAZARD PERRY: WILDERNESS COMMODORE.
McGraw-Hill, New York, 1978.
231 pp, large 8vo (9 1/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0070169870 Map. "Perry fought perhaps the most perfect single battle in American naval history. More - he insured the success of William Henry Harrison's Northwest Territory campaign, in which he soldiered as a volunteer aide to General Harrison. He ended Tecumseh's plans for an Indian Confederation. He dashed forever Britain's dream of blocking the United States in its westward march. In 1811 Perry was named to create a f l e e t on Lake Erie. He chose Presque Ile Bay as the one harbor safe from the existing British lake fleet. Perry spent the spring and summer of 1813 doing the impossible - building first a shipyard, then a fleet of ten vessels in the frontie r o ut po st o f Erie, Pennsylvania. The bar at Erie was not deep enough to pass Perry's ships out into the lake. (But neither could the British enter the bay over the shallows; hence his choice of harbor.) He bided his time till his opponent Ca pt ai n R obe rt Bar clay sailed away for a brief respite. Then his men, in a fenzy of activity, emptied their ships of all guns and heavy gear and buoyed them with pontoons until they could be boosted across the sandbar. Perry got them safely int o d eep wat er i n t he n ick of time. And when Barclay's fleet came up to resume the blockade of Erie, Perry bluffed them away with his still undermanned and almost unarmed flotilla. Once reinforced by a unit under the command of Jesse D. Elliot t, P erry atta cked the Briti sh fleet in his flagship 'Lawrence'; Elliott was to bring the 'Niagara' into action beside him. Elliott, unaccountably, hung back, and the 'Lawrence' was shot to pieces by the three strongest Britishers. How Perry tu rned certa in def eat i nto a monu mental victory is one of the greatest naval achievements of all time." 307 pp, large 8vo (9 1/2" H). "On average, people squander forty days annually compensating for things they've forgotten. Joshua Foer used to be one of those people. But after a year of memory training, he found himself in the finals of the U.S. Memory Championship. Even more important, he found a vital truth we too often forget: In every way that matters, we are the sum of our memories. (This book) draws on cutting-edge research, a surprising cultural history of memory, and venerable tricks of the mentalist's trade to transform our understanding of human remembering. Under the tutelage of top 'mental athletes', Foer learns ancient techniques once employed by Cicero to memorize his speeches and by medieval scholars to memorize entire books. Using methods that have been largely forgotten, he discovers that we can all dramatically improve our memories." Light wrinkling at bottom of spine. 195 pp, large 8vo (9 1/8" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0091569109 "Volume Two of Janet Frame's autobiography begins with her train journey from Oamaru to Dunedin to begin life as a student at Teachers' Training College and Otago University. Her shyness and insecurity made her 'different' and this, coupled with a clumsy suicide attempt, led to the first of her incarcerations in a mental hospital....Her initial meeting with Charles Brasch, the declaration of her sanity and mos t i m p o r t a ntly, the support of Frank Sargeson, bring a change of mood from one of 'a doomed eternity, all hope abandoned', to a pervading though tentative optimism. Through Frank Sargeson's acceptance of her as a person, his interest in her wr i ti ng a nd t he s upport of Karl and Kay Stead, begins her emergence into a normal lifestyle and her growing sense of the freedom to be herself. When with Frank Sargeson's help she receives a grant from the Literary Fund, she is able to 'tr ave l ove rse as and br oad en my experience'. It is this slow release from the past, this taking of a deep breath, figuratively speaking, along with Janet Frame's intense interest in the physical nature of her surroundings, that the reader will r ecal l rath er t han her des crip tio ns of 'forced submissions to custodial capture'." "This bookwork, produced by Oakville Galleries, represents the third and final version of a photographic work begun two years ago at the Domaine de Kerguehennec in Brittany, France, where it took the form of a work in situ: a 'fonds photographic' that was placed in the drawers of the castle's library to become a permanent installation. The work represents a monument to a fictional woman photographer who lived in the castle sometime in the late 19th century, and who wandered the park - especially the area around the lake - obsessively taking pictures of the landscape. Her mental health slowly deterioriated and eventually she killed herself. Her decline is illustrated in the photographs placed in the drawers in porfolio folders or boxes - ."
