BRIDGES OF BATTLE: FAMOUS BATTLEFIELD ACTIONS AT BRIDGES AND RIVER CROSSINGS., Featherstone, Donald.
2 Featherstone, Donald. BRIDGES OF BATTLE: FAMOUS BATTLEFIELD ACTIONS AT BRIDGES AND RIVER CROSSINGS.
London Arms and Armour 1998 1854094491 / 9781854094490 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good+
256 pp, large 8vo (9 1/2" H). B&w plates. "From more than 2,000 years of military history, (the author) has selected some one hundred examples of battles centred on river crossings. They range in size fom small-scale actions such as the battle for Powick Bridge in the early months of the English Civil War to massive, army-scale operations including the final crossing of the Rhine at Remagen during the Second World War. One of the biggest battles during the Napoleonic Wars - indeed, the biggest battle to that date with more than 300,000 men in combat - was fought across the Danube in 1809, culminating in the battle of Wagram. Later, as Napoleon's fortunes began to ebb, there took place the desperate and tragic crossing of the Berezina in 1812 when Napoleon's depleted army, retreating from Moscow, fought to cross the freezing river to escape the pursuing and encirling Russians and the hell of a Russian winter. The American Civil War also provides many examples of battles for river crossings, such as First Bull Run, the opening engagement of the war, the fight for Burnside's Bridge at Antietam and the Battle of the Big Black River during the riverine campaign for Vicksburg. Other, often lesser-known, actions are also to be found in this book, including tales of desperate courage from the Indian Mutiny and other British colonial wars. The range of contributions, including expert analyses and eyewitness accounts often enables the reader to see both sides of the story - those of the defender and the attacker - and to compare battles fought in similar circumstances, but with very different weapons, across the centuries." A few faint scuffs on the front board. Dust jacket has very minor edge wrinkling, one small edge tear archivally taped.

ONE PILOT'S LOG: THE CAREER OF E.L. "SLONNIE" SLONIGER., Sloniger, Jerrold E.
4 Sloniger, Jerrold E. ONE PILOT'S LOG: THE CAREER OF E.L. "SLONNIE" SLONIGER.
Howell, Charlottesville, VA, 1997, first edition.
192 pp, oblong 8vo (8 3/4" H x 11 1/4" D), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 1574270486 B&w photographs. "From the days of landing in open corn fields with the wind at his face to blind insturment landings in a snowstorm, E.L. "Slonnie" Sloniger was behind the controls of an airplane, open cockpit or closed. Slonnie looped the loop over Nebraska, averted bandits to deliver payrolls in Mexico, and served as an aviation ambassador, inaugurating commercial flight in China. As a pursuit pilot , barnstormer, racer, test pilot, acrobatic pilot, and, ultimately, a commercial pilot, Slonnie grew with aviation. Slonnie learned to fly when he entered the heavier-than-air division of the army, because he 'just didn't want to walk', and s e r v e d in the Air Service in WWI. Upon his return to the U.S., Slonnie bought his own plane, a Curtiss JN-4 'Canuck', and became a barnstormer, selling rides in small towns across the Middle Western plains. He flew for early airlines when t h e bi gg es t cu s tomer was the U.S. mail and saw the beginnings of the major lines; Slonnie was the original senior pilot, Number One, for American Airlines and flew for them for twenty years. In his career he accumulated nearly 25,000 flying ho ur s - a nu mbe r mat ch ed by only a handful of his peers. (This) is Slonnie's story as told to his son during the last years of his life. Slonnie's words together with the Sloniger family's extensive photograph collection recall the details of the c aree r of a t ru e av iat ion pioneer, a pilot's pilot, during an exhilarating period in American aviation history." Very small bump at top edge of front board, several areas of light to moderate edge rubbing on boards. Dust jacket has lig ht e dge wrin kling - ma inl y at top of spine area. Very Good/Very Good
