1 Aiken, Conrad. SELECTED POEMS.
New York Charles Scribner's Sons 1929 First, limited edition. Hard Cover Fair Signed by Author
361 pp, 8 1/2" H. Green cloth spine with gilt lettering/decorative banding, patterned paper-covered boards. *Lacking the publisher's slipcase.* No. 3 of 210 copies, numbered and signed by Conrad Aiken on the limitation page. Aiken was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for Poetry for 'Selected Poems' in 1930. Inscribed on the front free endpaper: "For Adrianne / on the way to / Hollywood / from / Philip Merivale / March : 1932". Philip Merivale was born in India, began his acting and screenwriting career in England, later moving to Los Angeles. This book is from the library of the actor Raymond Massey and we presume the 'Adrianne' of the dedication was Massey's first wife, Adrianne Allen (m.1929-1939). Ms. Allen is perhaps best known for her role in Noel Coward's 'Private Lives'. Following her divorce from Massey, Ms. Allen married American lawyer, William Dwight Whitney (and Massey married Whitney's ex-wife). In 1957 she joined her daughter, Anna Massey and Philip Merivale's son, John Merivale, in the Broadway production "The Reluctant Debutante", playing Sheila Broadbent, mother of the character played by Anna. Many pages have not been opened and others have rough edges from opening, several edge tears (archivally taped) or pieces missing from margins/corners between pages 329 & 336 - no text missing, age darkening to edges of text block - especially top of text block, moderate to heavy edge wear to boards - more at corners, browning to spine, light browning and some thin brown stains on boards, very light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, line dent across bottom of text block, small bump at top edge of rear board.

4 Brockhouse, Robert. THE ROYAL ALEXANDRA THEATRE: A CELEBRATION OF 100 YEARS.
Toronto McArthur 2007 155278648X / 9781552786482 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good+ Edward Burtynsky, photographer.
346 pp, 11 1/4" H. Profusely illustrated in colour, b&w and sepiatone with photographs/reproductions. "It was one of those grand civic gestures so loved by the aristocracy of the Gilded Age: a gift to Toronto meant to call the world's attention to its blossoming as a great city. The giver was Cawthra Mulock, 'the boy millionaire', one of the wealthiest men in Canada. The gift was the Royal Alexandra, a magnificent new theatre built - with no regard to cost - to equal the most splendid houses of London, Paris and New York. It was to be the lodestar of North American theatres, attracting the finest performers and the very best in dramatic art to a city that still smarted under the nickname 'Hogtown'. If Cawthra Mulock had known what obstacles lay in the way, he might never have broken ground. He could not have foreseen the cut-throat rivals who would seek to bankrupt him; nor the two World Wars; nor the coming of the movies, radio and television; nor the Great Depression that would close every other theatre in the country. This book tells the story of a Canadian national landmark and beloved Toronto institution, and of the remarkable, dogged and devoted champions - from Mulock to Mirvish - who have kept it alive, thriving and triumphant over 100 years." Small crease at top edge of pages 193 to 204., light waviness to edges og text block, very light wrinking at bottom of spine. Dust jacket very minor edge wrinkling, very minor rubbing, very soft wrinkle on rear panel.

"Canada's declaration of war against Germany in 1939 marked the beginning of the most significant eighteen-year period in the history of this nation. By the end of the Liberal regime in 1957 the country had undergone immense growth in human and material resources. The experience of the Second World War had been followed by participation in the Korean War and ten years of the Cold War. The Great Depression had given way to a boom which had continued through the exchange crisis, serious inflation and minor recessions. In addition, new life had been generated in the arts. The new road which Canada chose to follow led directly to a new world of planning and management, of economic controls and social equalization." Very light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine. Dust jacket is price-clipped, has wrinkling at top/bottom of spine - light elsewhere, rubbing and scratch to glossy front panel, a few tiny tears archivally taped, tiny scuff and tiny dent on rear panel, minor soiling.

Toronto Royal Ontario Museum 1986 0888543263 / 9780888543264 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Near Fine
214 pp, 9 3/4" H. B&w photographs, reproductions. "Mummies, dinosaurs, Persian textiles, exotic fishes, European bronzes, fossils, early Canadian furniture, artifacts of the Native peoples of Canada, rare Chinese ceramics, and a Ming tomb with its guardian figures - all these and much more are to be found in the galleries of the Royal Ontario Museum. (This book) gives a vivid account of the origins and growth of this impressive institution, which each year touches the lives of hundreds of thousands, from researchers to school classes thronging the galleries, to senior citizens involved in special programs. (The author) uses a biographical framework for the story of this exciting institution. First on the scene are the founders, such memorable figures as Sir Edmund Walker and Charles Trick Currelly. Then come the early directors, curators, and technicians, whose research and discoveries in every branch of the natural sciences and art and archaeology contributed to the Royal Ontario Museum's growing international reputation. In the aftermath of World War II a new generation of museum men and women took up the challenge of keeping the Royal Ontario Musuem one of the last combined science and art and archaeology musuems of first rank in the world. The unfolding story, with accomplishements, stresses, and strains interwoven, is captivating." One tiny corner bump, tiny bump at top/bottom of spine, tiny dent on front board. 13 Granatstein, J.L. CANADA 1957-1967: THE YEARS OF UNCERTAINTY AND INNOVATION. THE CANADIAN CENTENARY SERIES NO. 19.
Toronto McClelland & Stewart 1986 0771035152 / 9780771035159 First Edition Hard Cover Near Fine Very Good Signed by Author
375 pp, 9 1/4" H. B&w photographs, political cartoons. Signed by author on title page. "In the tenth decade of Canada's confederation, the expansive and unifying post-war boom gave way to rapid change and conflicting choices. These were the years of John Diefenbaker and Lester Pearson, years when Canada's culture, economy, and politics took new directions and the foundations of today's political and social realities were laid. Beginning with a survey of the country in 1957, poised to grasp Diefenbaker's grand 'Vision', the author vividly describes how the Progressive Conservative promise won the nation - and later could not be fulfilled. In these critical years Canada joined NORAD and scrapped the Avro Arrow jet fighter; the Diefenbaker Cabinet tore itself apart over the nuclear arms question. At the same time, the economic crisis of the early sixties gave the Liberals a much-needed political weapon as the government faced soaring budget deficits, a declining dollar, and a severe recession. Politics mirrored public feelings in the mid-1960s as governments federal and provincial addressed new kinds of problems. Unification of the armed forces, medicare, and bilingualism in the public services, especially in the context of the growing political and cultural ferment in Quebec, proved divisive as well as innovative." Minor wrinkle at bottom of spine. Dust jackat has very small tear and creases at top of spine - archivally taped, some very light edge wear/wrinkling with one tiny tear archivally taped.

We meet Hart Almerrin Massey, the family patriarch who bankrolled the Hall and dedicated it to the memory of Charles Albert, one of his sons. And we encounter the genius of Dr. Augustus Vogt, the founder of the Mendelssohn, and witness the mastery and merriment of the Toronto Symphony's Sir Ernest MacMillan, a man Roberston Davies has said 'set new standards of taste, purged the repertoire, and demanded a new quality of attention'.
