5 Collard, Elizabeth. THE POTTERS' VIEW OF CANADA: CANADIAN SCENES ON NINETEENTH-CENTURY EARTHENWARE.
Kingston McGill-Queen's University Press 1983 0773504214 / 9780773504219 First Edition Hard Cover Near Fine Very Good
194 pp, large 8vo (9 3/4" H). B&w photographs, reproductions, marks. "This is the first book to be devoted exclusively to potters' views of Canada. The potters' views of Canada have a many-sided appeal, linking the world of artists, printmakers, and photographers to the ceramics industry. Covering the period from the beginning of the nineteenth century to the end of Queen Victoria's reign, this volume focuses chiefly on wares made for the dinner table or the washstand. All are earthenware, decorated by transfer printing, and produced by British potters. The scenes they depict range from the awesome falls at Niagara to early steamboats on the St Lawrence, from igloos in the Arctic to a governor's residence in New Brunswick. Elizabeth Collard traces the evolution of these wares, placing them in their historical setting and identifying the sources from which many of the views were derived. She also provides much detail on the English and Scottish potters and on the artists whose work they adapted to their own use." Very minor edge wear at top/bottom of spine. Dust jacket has very light edge wear/wrinkling - mainly at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, light rubbing to glossy surface.

THE INHERITOR'S POWDER: A TALE OF ARSENIC, MURDER, AND THE NEW FORENSIC SCIENCE., Hempel, Sandra.
10 Hempel, Sandra. THE INHERITOR'S POWDER: A TALE OF ARSENIC, MURDER, AND THE NEW FORENSIC SCIENCE.
New York W.W. Norton 2013 0393239713 / 9780393239713 First American Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good
278 pp, 9 1/2" H. "In the first half of the nineteenth century, an epidemic swept Europe: arsenic poisoning. Available at any corner shop for a few pence, arsenic was so frequently used by potential beneficiaries of wills that it was nicknamed 'the inheritor's powder'. But it was difficult to prove that a victim had been poisoned, let alone to identify the contaminated food or drink since arsenic was tasteless. Then came a riveting case. (When, after three days of agony) wealthy George Bodle died, (he left) behind several heirs, including a son and grandson - both of whom were not on the best of terms with the family patriarch. The investigation brought together a colorful cast of characters: bickering relatives; a drunken, bumbling policeman; and James Marsh, an unknown but brilliant chemist who, assigned the Bodle case, attempted to create a test that could accurately pinpoint the presence of arsenic. In doing so, however, he would cause as many problems as he solved. Were innocent men and women now going to the gallows? And would George Bodle's killer be found? Incisive and wryly entertaining, science writer Sandra Hempel brings to life a gripping story of domestic infighting, wayward police behavior, a slice of Victorian history, stories of poisonings, and an unforgettable foray into the origins of forensic science." MITCHELL: PIONEER OF AIR POWER., Levine, Isaac Don. Foreword by Lt. General D.C. Strother.
16 Levine, Isaac Don. Foreword by Lt. General D.C. Strother. MITCHELL: PIONEER OF AIR POWER.
New York Duell, Sloan and Pearce 1958 Revised Edition Hard Cover Very Good Good
420 pp, 8 1/2" H. B&w photographs. "The life of Billy Mitchell epitomizes the story of the development of air power, and the author presents this life against the background of an age that was revolutionized by the rise of the flying machine. Like Teddy Roosevelt, Billy Mitchell was the scion of a dynastic fam-ily, grandson of an empire builder, son of a United States Senator. At eighteen, he enlisted in the Spanish-American War. From that moment on his story belongs to the annals of his age. Mr. Levine has had access to the private files of General Mitchell, to the archives of the Mitchell family, and has also had the co-operation of many of Mitchell's closest friends and associates. The result is a fact-filled chronicle, with astonishing anecdotes, exceptional personal material, unknown pages of aviation lore, a story that brings to light striking facts and dramatic personalities. Franklin D. Roosevelt, Douglas MacArthur, Fiorello LaGuardia, General Arnold, and scores of others appear in new or little-known roles. Mitchell himself cuts a heroic national figure, the indomitable crusader, the pioneer as well as the prophet of air power." THE AVRO LANCASTER., Mason, Francis K.
19 Mason, Francis K. THE AVRO LANCASTER.
Aston, (Bourne End, Bucks, 1989).
437 pp, small 4to (10 7/8" H), hard cover in dust jacket. Profusely illustrated with b&w photos (some aerial), maps, reproductions, fold-out color cutaway. "...the most extensive chronicle of a British bomber ever undertaken - of more than half a million words - describes how the Lancaster came into being and how it fulfilled the faith placed in it by those who planned it. From the consuming belief, espoused by Trenchard between the Wars, that the heavy bomber was the raison d'etre of the R oyal Air Force, to the realisation that Britain, faced in 1936 with the likelihood of war with Germany, was still without an aircraft that could hit the enemy capital with worthwhile bombs. Thus was developed the famous trio of true heavy bombers, the Stirling, Halifax and Lancaster. And by the end of that war, the Lancaster equipped 60 out of Bomber Command's 80 heavy bomber squadrons; more than 1,3000 out of 1,850 British heavy bombers were Lancasters...the Author has made reference to all the outstanding raids undertaken in an extraordinary compendium of individual 'histories' of every Lancaster built (over 7,000 of them), and mention is made of several thousand individual crew members - separately indexed for ease of reference. Th e book contains hundreds of photographs (many from previously untapped sources) as well as maps and diagrams, and a separate Chapter - including cutaway and general arrangements drawings, executed by the Author in colour-describesthe Lancaster in considerable detail." Contents: Towards a Strategic Bombing Force; The Reluctant Transition: Farewell to Biplanes; Heavyweights - With Two Engines; Odds Too Great; The Lancaster is Born; The First Lancaster Squadrons; The Coming of the Pathfinders; No Corner of the Reich; Special People for a Special Job; The Battle of the Ruhr; The Battle of Hamburg; The Battle of Berlin; Nuremburg and Overlord; More Special Operations; In Support of the Armies; The Last Six Months; The Transition from War ; Lancasters in the Laboratory; In Other Air Forces; They Also Served; The Lancaster Described; Appendices - Deployment of Manchester and Lancaster Units; Awards of the Victoria Cross and the Conspicuous Gallantry Medal; Lancaster and Manchester Production, Allocation and Service; Lancasters with High Raid Tallies; Glossary; Bibliography. "Presents the full, authoritative story of that 'brave band of brothers' who were the first Americans to fight in World War I. Patriots, adventurers, even soldiers of fortune, they came from all walks of life, burning with a kind of idealism which has now all but disappeared. They began their fight against the Hun in the trenches - as members of the Foreign Legion they kept their U.S. cit i z e n s h ip - but turned naturally and enthusiastically to the new war that was being waged high in the sky. They flew French planes and at first were scattered among various French squadrons. Then a special 'escadrille' was formed for the Amer ic an s, a nd s oon its reputation spread far beyond the front. While the United States was sending obsolete 'Jenny' training planes against Pancho Villa in Mexico, the Lafayette Escadrille - and Americans like Norman Prince, Raoul Lufbery, Victo r C hap man , B ill Th aw, Kiffin Rockwell and Jim McConnell - was meeting in deadly dogfights the best pilots Germany had to offer. (This book) is based on years of research in Europe and in America, including interviews with survivors of the Esc adri lle. It is ther efor e not only the definitive story of the Escadrille but also a unique portrayal of the first war in the air. It reveals the full spectrum of their existence - in the air as well as on the ground. It tells of pet lion cub s (na med W hiske y an d Sod a) as well as ambitious air raids; of dogfights as well as highjinks in Paris. More than any other book, this dramatic narrative tells honestly and in depth what it was like to be an American pursuit pilot in the Great War." Mino r wrin kling at to p/bott om of front hinge.
