THE MARRIAGE BED., Beresford-Howe, Constance.
1 Beresford-Howe, Constance. THE MARRIAGE BED.
Macmillan of Canada, Toronto, 1981, first edition.
232 pp, 8vo (8 3/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0771595549 "Meet Anne Graham, mother of three-year-old Martha and one-year-old Hugh, young, attractive, heavily pregnant - and alone. Things have not worked out at all the way Anne intended. Her teenage plans of marrying a rich Older Man who would put her through university were thwarted when Max, the first suitable candidate to come along, married Anne's mother, Billie, instead. Then her promising academic career was cut sh o r t w h e n her first real romance led to an unexpected pregnancy and an early marriage. Finally, and much more recently, her stable home life crumbled with her husband's announcement that he was leaving her to move into a commune with his secr et ar y. N ow s he is a housebound single mother of two and three-quarter children, whose intellectual life has shrunk to stolen moments of bedtime reading....The solution to her problem is clear to her friends and neighbours. She must find som eon e t o m i nd the ch ild r en and then go back to school or get at job. It's obvious. Or is it? Once again, Constance Beresford-Howe has approached a common theme from an uncommon point of view, with her own blend of perceptiveness and ironic hum our. Th e res ult is a boo k that is gritty, entertaining, and, ultimately, optimistic - just like its heroine." Minor edge wear, a few tiny foxing marks on top of textblock, slight wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, tiny faint scuff on fron t boa rd. Dust ja cket has ligh t edg e wear/wrinkling, a few tiny edge tears, minor rubbing/soiling, tiny scuff on front panel. Very Good/Very Good

359 pp, 9 1/4" H. B&w photographs, reproductions. "There was a time when massive flocks of Passenger Pigeons blotted out the sun, and bright green Carolina Parakeets were so numerous that they looked, according to an early American pioneer, 'like an atmosphere of gems.' But these birds - as well as the Labrador Duck, the Ivory-billed Woodpecker, the Heath Hen, and the Great Auk - now live only as tantalizing but hazy legends. Driven by a desire to understand how and why this came to be, (the author) embarked on ten years of extraordinary detective work. Traveling from Bird Rock in the Gulf of St. Lawrence to Louisiana's tangled bayous in search of those who stalked these birds and those who tried to save them, he discovered strange stories and glorious quests, tales of scientific heroism and political stupidity, of inconceivable apathy and equally astonishing personal devotion. A compelling blend of science, history, politics, and memoir, (this) is a richly detailed and ultimately uplifting narrative of dedication, discovery, and wonder." Light wrinkling at bottom of spine. Dust jacket has minor wrinkle at top of rear panel.

352 pp, large 8vo (9 1/4" H). B&w photographs. "Toller Cranston is: six-time Canadian figure-skating champion, celebrity, costume designer, artist extraordinaire, broadcaster, choreographer of skating routines, raconteur, bon vivant, coach, world traveller, art collector, legend and enigma. In 1976 he won Olympic bronze (so why did it feel like defeat?). This book tells the story of his life after those fateful games at Innsbruck. The rise and fall of Toller's first professional ice show is described in soul-searing detail. His subsequent triumphant tour of Europe as the Skater of the Century is recounted, in contrast, with wicked humour. There are vignettes here of his encounters with the rich and famous from Leonard Bernstein to Pierre Cardin and of his life among Europe's aristocrats and bohemians. Toller has experienced the high life and the low. He has stayed in the most luxurious hotels, held court in palatial houses, sought seclusion in beautiful estates. But the hard times took their toll. In the early 1990s a combination of circumstances, including a disastrous professional association with out-of-control American skater Christopher Bowman and a lawsuit that dragged on for years (ending in complete victory for Toller), led to a personal crisis from which recovery came slowly. But even in the blackest hours, Toller's humour and creative powers never deserted him - an extraordinary self -portrait written by a uniquely gifted individual. Toller's wit, insight, and delicious way with words will entertain and astound readers whether they are skating fans or not." Dust jacket has very minor edge wrinkling.

9 Hunt, Peter, editor. Associate editors: Dennis Butts, Ethel Heins, Margaret Kinnell, Tony Watkins. With Gillian Avery, Anne Scott MacLeod, Julia Briggs, Zena Sutherland, Peter Hollindale, Michael Stone, Roderick McGillis & Beth Gilderdale. CHILDREN'S LITERATURE: AN ILLUSTRATED HISTORY.
Oxford Oxford University Press 1995 0192123203 / 9780192123206 First Edition Hard Cover Fine Very Good
378 pp, large 8vo (9 7/8" H). Pictorial endpapers, many b&w and color photographs and reproductions. "(T)races the history of children's books in Britain, the USA, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand from the very first printed books through to the present day. (This book) takes 'children's literature' to mean books designed for children as well as books for childhood, and so embraces everything from religious tracts to multi-media comics, from the 'classic' to the unashamedly popular. Written by leading experts, this survey shows that children's literature reflects how childhood has been defined, controlled, and appreciated at different times. It reveals how adults have explored questions of power, entertainment, sexuality, and equality through their writing for children, and demonstrates how the borders between what is adult and what children's fiction are routinely blurred. A series of chronological chapters charts the 'history' which begins in the sixteenth century with grammars and ABCs. We move from books of instruction through to fables and fantasies in the eighteenth century, from reward books and romance to school stories in the nineteenth, and on to comics, colour picture-books, and science fiction in (the twentieth century). Throughout the text, books, authors, illustrators, publishers, and children readers are discussed within their wider social, political, and economic environment. Richly illustrated in black and white and colour, and with a section on further reading, a full index, and a chronology which places books for children in their literary and political context, this is a fascinating study which will delight all readers, young and old." Dust jacket has minor edge wear and light edge wrinkling; tiny dent on front hinge; slight fading to color on front panel, spine, top edge and flap-folds.

James Lorimer, Toronto, 1977.
95 pp, 8 3/8" H, soft cover. B&w photographs. ISBN 0888621493 "Mennonites are among the earliest settlers of nineteenth-century Ontario. A law-abiding, deeply religious and pacifist people, they travelled from Pennsylvania by wagon and foot to s ettle in the Niagara area around Kitchener-Waterloo and in York County north of Toronto. To Canada the Mennonites brought a long rural tradition of architecture, furniture-making and folk art. These ideas inspired the houses and farms the y b u i l t , and the production of a great variety of furniture, in a style rooted in Germany and Pennsyvania and modified with the Ontario experience. Authors Musson and Nykor concentrate on the furniture of the York County area, and draw paral le l s an d co nt ra s ts with the predominant styles in other Ontario communities. Also discussed are the homes, farms and churches of the Mennonite community. These too are distinctive in style while unmistakeably part of the larger nineteenth-c ent ur y Ont ar io tra dit io n."
