OUR INTELLECTUAL STRENGTH AND WEAKNESS / 'ENGLISH-CANADIAN LITERATURE' / 'FRENCH-CANADIAN LITERATURE., Bourinot, John George; Marquis, Thomas Guthrie; Roy, Camille. Introduction by Clara Thomas.
2 Bourinot, John George; Marquis, Thomas Guthrie; Roy, Camille. Introduction by Clara Thomas. OUR INTELLECTUAL STRENGTH AND WEAKNESS / 'ENGLISH-CANADIAN LITERATURE' / 'FRENCH-CANADIAN LITERATURE.
University of Toronto Press, Toronto, 1973.
489 pp, 8vo (8 7/16" H), soft cover. "These three works, displaying marked differences in purpose, tone, and effect, are all classics of Canadian literary and cultural criticism. John George Bourinot was a man of letters, an Imperialist, and a bic ulturalist, who was confident of his knowledge of the Canadian identity and felt it to be his public mission to align reality with his own personal vision. Writing in 1893 to the elite represented by the members of the Royal Society, he d e s c r i b e d h is work as 'a monograph on the intellectual development of the Dominion', describing 'the progress of culture in a country still struggling with the difficulties of the material development of half a continent'. Two decades later , Th om as G ut hr ie Ma rquis and Camille Roy wrote what were, in contrast, specialized assignments, contributions to the compendium history, 'Canada and Its Provinces' (1913). Addressing a far larger audience, and treating a vastly enlarged bod y of Can adi an lit era tur e , t heir work comes much closer to contemporary scholarship, with greater clarity, organization, and sheer bulk of information, but with the loss of some of the charm and assurance of Bourinot's wide sweep. In further co ntr ast to B our inot 's d eter mi ned biculturalism and will to unity, Roy and Marquis' essays display vivid differences in the emotional allegiances and convictions of the founding cultures. Marquis starts by asking the question, 'Has Canada a vo ice of h er ow n in lite ratur e dis tin ct f rom that of England?'; Roy treats French-Canadian literature in its Roman Catholic contexts." 3 Browning, Reed. THE WAR OF THE AUSTRIAN SUCCESSION.

445 pp, 8 3/16" H. "The apparent vulnerability of the Habsburg Empire at the time of Maria Theresa's accession destabilized the whole of Europe and, with Frederick the Great's invasion of Silesia, a cycle of violence was initiated that lasted for eight years and ravaged much of the continent. The vast conflict, which involved almost all the European powers and their empires, is the subject of (this book). (It) provides a highly readable narrative of a complex period that fundamentally shaped the European state system. The author explores the often changing war aims of the major belligerents - Austria, France, Great Britain, Prussia, Piedmont-Sardinia, and Spain - and links diplomatic and military events to the political and social context from which they arose." Interior - a few pages with a tiny soft corner bump, otherwise clean and tight with no other ownership marks. Exterior - light edge wear, small coft crease at top rear corner.

5 Collard, Elizabeth. THE POTTERS' VIEW OF CANADA: CANADIAN SCENES ON NINETEENTH-CENTURY EARTHENWARE.
Kingston McGill-Queen's University Press 1983 0773504214 / 9780773504219 First Edition Hard Cover Near Fine Very Good
194 pp, large 8vo (9 3/4" H). B&w photographs, reproductions, marks. "This is the first book to be devoted exclusively to potters' views of Canada. The potters' views of Canada have a many-sided appeal, linking the world of artists, printmakers, and photographers to the ceramics industry. Covering the period from the beginning of the nineteenth century to the end of Queen Victoria's reign, this volume focuses chiefly on wares made for the dinner table or the washstand. All are earthenware, decorated by transfer printing, and produced by British potters. The scenes they depict range from the awesome falls at Niagara to early steamboats on the St Lawrence, from igloos in the Arctic to a governor's residence in New Brunswick. Elizabeth Collard traces the evolution of these wares, placing them in their historical setting and identifying the sources from which many of the views were derived. She also provides much detail on the English and Scottish potters and on the artists whose work they adapted to their own use." Very minor edge wear at top/bottom of spine. Dust jacket has very light edge wear/wrinkling - mainly at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, light rubbing to glossy surface.

BRITISH REGULAR CAVALRY, 1644-1914., Cooper, Leonard.

London Chapman & Hall 1965 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good
216 pp, 8vo (8 3/4"). Pictorial endpapers, b&w plates. "Mr. Cooper takes up his story with the formation of Cromwell's New Model Army, which marked a significant change in cavalry tactics, and closes it with a chapter devoted to the South African War and the years up to the beginning of the 1914 War. In addition, he has written an epilogue to cover the period of cavalry's gradual surrender to mechanisation. Between these points lie nearly three hundred years of history and countless battles which depended for their outcome on the ability and efficiency of the cavalry arm. (He) does not attempt to describe each of these battles in detail; rather, he is concerned, by giving accounts of a series of battles typical of a campaign, or of aspects of the training and tactics of cavalry - Blenheim, Dettingen, Salamanca, Waterloo, Balaclava, etc. - to give a historical impression of the arm's growth and achievements." Short crease at top of pages 73 to 80 - causes some indentation on adjacent pages, minor edge wear, minor wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, minor soiling at bottom of spine. Dust jacket has very light edge wrinkling, soft creasing at top of rear panel, faint foxing and browning .

As a result, it is perhaps only natural that a most persistent call has come to me to record in a way that will be imperishable a few of the virtues of these honest and upright lives." Toronto Coles 1974 Facsimile Edition. Hard Cover Fine Very Good
431 pp, 8 5/8" H. Burgundy cloth with gilt lettering/banding on spine and front board - one of the Coles Canadian Collection.B&w illustrations. A facsimile of the edition published by John Winston Co., Philadelphia, 1913 - with a new introduction for the Coles Canadiana Collection. "After establishing the physical setting of French Canada and its natural splendor, Hopkins examines and describes the types - religious, social, psychological - who were responsible for the creation of French Canada, and French Canadian society. As themes, Hopkins emphsizes the discoverers Cartier and Champlain, the explorers - fur traders Lasalle, and LaVerendrye, the roles of the Church, the martyrs, the early government administrators. Hopkins' views and sentiments reflected the philosophies of many of his contemporaries, including John A. Macdonald, Wilfrid Laurier and Sir Thomas Chapais. Despite the strong and steady current of Imperial sentiment prevailing, an incipient Canadian nationalism was emerging, fostered by the creation of national heroes, villains and saints." University Press of New England, Hanover,
121 pp, 8vo (8 11/16" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0874518539 B&w cartoons. "In this second and final volume 'composed' by Archy, the literary cockroach, the wonderfully whimsical insect and his fractious feline friend Mehitabel, engage in misadventures large and small and comment with quirky accuracy on the common state of humanity. Previously unpublished in book form and literally recovered from a steamer trunk by editor Jeff Adams, these stories are the product of Don Ma r q u i s , a New York columnist and raconteur who was one of America's most popular humorists during the early 20th century. Ungrammatical as they may be, Archy's wry insights are a true delight, for, as he puts it, 'one advantage to being a coc kr oa ch i s th a t i see things from the under side'. From that unique perspective we follow the continuing saga of Archy, the Cockroach Detective, a spoof on the gumshoe genre in which the six-legged private eye encounters a raja, his chorus-gi rl har em, Bo ls hev is t tw ins, an Egyptologist, seven sister manicurists, and a set of bejeweled false teeth. Accompanied by the inspired drawings of cartoonist Ed Frascino, these new Archy tales are, Adams writes, 'classic American humor, as v ivi d an d am usin g t oday as t hey were decades ago'." Fore-edge of front board extends 1/8" further out than rear board. Dust jacket has very light wrinkling at top edge. Very Good+/Very Good+

London Weidenfeld & Nicolson 2001 0297646079 / 9780297646075 First Edition Hard Cover Near Fine Very Good+
350 pp, 9 1/2" H. B&w and colour illustrations, maps/battle plans. "At breakfast on the morning of the battle of Waterloo, the Emperor Napoleon declared that the Duke of Wellington was a bad general, the British were bad soldiers and that France could not fail to win an easy victory. Forever afterwards, historians have accused him of gross overconfidence and massively underestimating the calibre of the British commander opposed to him. Andrew Roberts presents an original, highly revisionist view of the relationship between the two greatest captains of their age. The fascinating, constantly changing relationship between these two historical giants forms the basis of (his) compelling study in pride, rivalry, propaganda, nostalgia and posthumous revenge." 424 pp, 9 1/4" H. B&w photographs, maps, genealogical chart. The first volume of 'The Selected Journals of L.M. Montgomery' "takes her to 1910, the year before her marriage, when she left Prince Edward Island. It recounts her schooldays in Cavendish, redolent with incidents, impressions, and romantic 'crushes' that found their way into her fiction; a year spent in Prince Albert, Saskatchewan, with her father and stepmother; a year of study at Prince of Wales College in Charlottetown, where she trained to be a teacher, and another at Dalhousie University; her teaching years; a powerful infatuation with the son of a family she lived with; a long and mostly unhappy period of keeping house for her grandmother; and the publication of 'Anne of Green Gables'. The autobiographical content will fasciant every devoted reader of the Anne books. But the Montgomery journals are especially interesting because they provide a unique social history and the privilege of viewing closely the life of a remarkable woman. Comprising perhaps the most vivid and detailed memoir in Canadian letters, the journals will join 'Anne of Green Gables' in ensuring Montgomery's lasting place in Canadian liter-ature." Very light browning to pages and edges of text block, minor wrinkling at top/bottom of spine. Dust jacket has minor soiling, light wrinkling and a few tiny tears at top of spine, some waviness on rear panel, protected in a mylar sleeve.

"To storm and take Quebec (William Pitt) chose thirty-two year old James Wolfe, the soldier so much admired by Nelson. On ly a few month earlier Wolfe had become secretly engaged, but as a professional soldier he embarked for North America with the utmost enthusiasm. His task was not made easier by the facts that he was opposed by the Marquis de Montcalm, outst a n d i n g for his courage and chivalry; the French had recently been reinforced and were making skilful use of savage Red Indian auxiliaries; and Wolfe's three brigadiers were highly critical and jealous of his promotion over their heads. Finall y, t he a pp ro a ch up the St. Lawrence was extraordinarily difficult owing to its complex shoals. On the other hand, Wolfe had been chosen for his superb handling of men; his expedition included one of the great navigators of history, James Coo ke; an d h elp fr om Ad miral Saunders proved a landmark in the development of combined operations. The advantages were therefore more or less equally divided between the opposing armies. With absorbing skill (the author) recounts the fluctuatio ns o f th e ac tion whi ch led to Wolfe's brilliant victory, death and apotheosis. To follow each stage of the engagement through the accounts of the men who were there - and through the remarkable illustrations collected in this book - is to exp erien ce pe rsona lly o ne of th e th ree great victories of the 'annus mirabilis'." "(T)ells the story of human violence from Peking Man to the Mafia, taking into account the calculated sadism of the Assyrians, the opportunism of the Greek pirates, the brutality that made Rome the 'razor king of the Mediterranean', the mindless destruction of the Vandals, the mass slaughter of Genghis Khan, Tamurlane, Ivan the Terrible, Vlad the Impaler - - . Each age has its own characteristic pattern of crime. In the past three centuries crime has changed and evolved until the sex killer and the mass murderer have become symbols of all that is worst about our civilization. But this is not just a study of human depravity: it is an attempt to place crime in perspective against human discovery, exploration and invention. The result is a completely new approach to the history and psychology of human violence."
