Brassey's (US), Washington, (1992), first edition.

ISBN: 0028810287 "The House of Representatives' official report on Operation Desert Storm, (this book) discloses what went right, what went wrong, and what was learned for tomorrow's defense planning and budgets. It is the first such congressional postwar analysis ever published. With responsiblity to go far beyond the media reports, the House Armed Services Committee interviewed nearly a thousand participants while thoroughly scrutinizing the coalition victory over Iraq. The culmination of that wide-ranging analysis, this book provides unique insights into such crucial topics as personnel, planning and deployment, the bombing and ground campaigns, the role of high technology, logicistics and communications, and intelligence. It is a tough, bipartisan evaluation that leads to provocative suggestions for future defense in a rapidly changing world." Very minor edge wear. THE STORY OF THE ROYAL TOURNAMENT., Binns, P.L., Lieutenant-Colonel.
3 Binns, P.L., Lieutenant-Colonel. THE STORY OF THE ROYAL TOURNAMENT.
Gale & Polden, Aldershot, 1952, Ist edition.
156 pp, 8vo (8 5/8" H), hard cover in dust jacket. Results of 1952 Royal Tournament laid-in. B&w photos, reproductions. "Fifty-three Tournaments have passed since the first 'Grand Assault-at-Arms' at Islington for the benefit of the volunteers of London and any Regular troops stationed 'within convenient range'. In 1883 the declared object was simply the promotion of skill-at-arms, but gradually the charitable side asserted itself until both aspects were recognized as being of equal importance. Both objects have been successfully achieved. This story tells of those early days when the sword, lance and bayonet were the main weapons of the Queen's soldiers, and describes the means by which the Tournament encouraged their skilful use. It traces the gradual decline of these weapons from the appearance of the early Maxim and Gatling guns which were diplayed in mimic warfare in the presence of enthusiastic audiences at Islington. In addition to showing development in arms and warfare, the Tournament has year by year demonstrated the progress made in the art of training the Service man in his profession..." 221 pp, large 8vo (9" H). B&w illustrations. "Throughout history and continuing to this day, occurrences have been reported that are so extraordinary there seem to be no possible natural explanations. Yet the credibility of the witnesses - often including thousands who have simultaneously observed the same mysterious event - and the consistency of these events across centuries of time and disparate parts of the earth indicate that they cannot be easily dismissed. (P)opular writer and aeronautics expert Martin Caidin reviews some of the most fascinating of these observations. Among the phenomena he discusses are: Careful tests by scientists showing that some people really can control objects at at distance; Reports from Vietnam combat marines of huge, glowing yellow 'semi-humans' impervious to machine-gun fire; Testimony from several different teams of Soviet cosmonauts citing encounters with 'giant angels'; Documented reports of people using divining rods to find rich deposits of ore, oil, and underground water sources that had gone undetected by scientific instruments; UFO sightings noted throughout recorded history - and their incredibly consistent similarity over three thousand years and many lands." Exterior - light edge wear, very small crease at bottom corners of covers, two creases at top corner of front cover and large soft crease at bottom corner, blank small label on rear cover.

342 pp, large 8vo, hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0771029292 B&w photographs. "It was probably the most important battle of the Second World War. The German attempt to stem the vital trans-Atlantic flow of men and supplies to Britian would cost the Allies more than 2,600 merchant ships, 30,000 merchant seamen's lives, 5,000 aircrew, and about 2,500 aircraft. The battle ranged across the ocean: from the waters of the St. Lawrence, throught the treacherous open sea of the North Atlantic, to the fjords of Norway and the Bay of Biscay. Spencer Dunmore traces the complete history of the Battle of the Atlantic, giving equal time to all aspects of the conflict: in the air, on the water, and below its surface...tells the story from the perspective of both sides, and includes the first-hand accounts of individual participants, both Allied and German..." 96 pp, small 4to (10" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0882544322 B&w photographs, reproductions, color and b&w uniform studies. "(This is) a survey of the uniforms worn by officers and men in the three combatant navies - Britain, France and S pain. John Fabb and Jack Cassin-Scott first set the uniforms in the context of life aboard a fighting ship during the Napoleonic wars - a severely disciplined, often brutal existence punctuated by battles, like Trafalgar, of terrifying blood i n e s s . They go on to describe the uniforms, rank by rank and nation by nation, from the splendour of the admiral in full dress, through each rank in full dress and undress versions until, at the bottom of the scale we find the starkly functio na l cl ot hi ng of the ordinary seaman. Particular care has been taken to present uniforms from original sources and Dress Regulations and, where appropriate, to show back views - so often neglected yet of much interest to, for example, modellers . In ad dit ion th e re is information on swords and decorations. In all cases the illustrations have been taken from contemporary sources." 122 pp, 8vo (8 3/4" H). B&w photographs, reproductions. "Since their formation in 1694 as Farrington's Regiment the Worcestershire Regiment (bearing the numbers 29 and 36) has achieved almost unique status, being one of the only four British regiments to have an English motto and one of the only two to bear the elongated garter star as a badge as well as having a naval crown above it. This last distinction was awarded to them for the part they played whilst serving as Marines in the British fleet at the action known as 'the Glorious First of June'. Subsequently they distinguished themselves in the Peninsular War and the Sikh Wars, and they are remembered in more recent times for their superb action at Gheluvelt in 1914 when by closing the gap in the British line they saved Ypres and halted the German advance to the Channel ports. Later they fought doggedly at Neuve Chappelle and in all gained nine V.C.s during the Great Wa r. In the 1939-1945 War they raised twelve battalions and fought, as their nickname 'Guards of the Line' suggests, with great gallantry and steadiness all over the world. Gazala-Point 187, Normandy, Kohima and Mandalay are but a few of the names familiar to the Worcesters. Now the Regiment is to be amalgamated with the Sherwood Foresters. On the cap-badge of the new Regiment the motto 'Firm' stands out, permanently signifying the intention to continue the traditions of loyalty and service. General Gale, one of the Regiment's most distinguished sons, has here written a colourful account of the history of one of our great County Regiments." Leo Cooper, London, 1970, first edition.
122 pp, 8vo (8 3/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0850520363 B&w photographs, reproductions. "In (this volume) we have a regiment that began life as Marines at the time when the Royal Navy first penetrated into the Mediterranean; we have an other regiment, quite separate at that time from the first, taking part as the only complete unit in the otherwise best forgotten foray into the Highlands after Bonny Prince Charlie that ended disastrously at Prestonpans; and we have the crow n i n g g l ory of the defence of the Residency at Lucknow during the Indian Mutiny. This in addition to participation in the American War of Independence, a reminder of which is still worn by all light infantrymen in their cap badge; the Peninsul ar W ar a n d Wa terloo and the wars in the Crimea, in Egypt and in South Africa. The story goes into two world wars and in the exploits here recorded it was west country men who, particularly in the second of them, provided the backbone of the D .C. L.I .'s ba tt al ion s. A regimental history would be a dull affair were it not for the records and diaries that past members have left behind them. The D.C.L.I. is particularly fortunate in its 'other rank' chroniclers and Privates Waterfiel d an d Me tcal fe, Cor por al R yder and Sergeant Philip are a quartet the interest and pungency of whose anecdotes it would be hard to beat...." From the dust jacket of 'The Bombay Marines': "Newly returned from a successful assignment to rid the Arabian Se a of pirates, Captain Adam Horne of the frigate 'Eclipse' is summoned to the presence of his commading officer, Commodore Watson, head of the East India Company's private fighting unit, the much derided Bombay Marines. It is 1761, and Pond i c h e r r y , last stronghold of the French in the Indian subcontinent, has just fallen to the British. Now Captain Horne is given a strange and secret mission: to capture the defeated French commander Thomas Lally, from his prison at Fort St. G eo rg e in M ad ra s - or the unit will be disbanded for failure. Due to the deployment of most of the Marines on the east coast of India, Horne's force is seriously undermanned. He is left with only one choice: to take his pick of the motley co lle cti on of th iev es, r ap ists and murderers held in the prisons of Bombay Castle and subject them to intensive training for the most closely guarded campaign of the Seven Years' War. Drawing on a wealth of historical characters and events, and on l itt le-s tudi ed d ocum ent s o f the East India Company's early history, the action moves from sea to land, from the colourful waterfront of Bombay to the sadistic penal colony of Bull Island and the final, cataclysmic denouement within th e wa lls o f Fo rt St . Geo rge. In C apta in A dam Horne Porter Hill has created a character as vivid as Hornblower and Ramage, a man who has rejected the prestige of service in the Royal Navy or the East India Company's Maritime Service for the d ashin g, dar e-dev il lif e of h istor y's fi rst c omman do-style unit, operating amid the exotic dangers of Britain's most coveted oriental territories...." "During the air campaign of Operation Desert Storm, the only thing more incessant than the bombing was the technically inaccurate reporting of the news media. This unfo rtunate dissemination of erroneous information led to misconceptions about what was happening in the most unique chapter in the history of aerial combat. Here, for the first time, is an accurate, close-up, and detailed look at the high-tech war f a r e played out in the skies over Iraq and Kuwait. Using terminology anyone can understand, (the author) explains the concepts and strategies that were used to plan and execute the most successful air campaign in history. Kinzey provides a wea lt h of i nformation, including: How the air campaign was actually planned and carried out; All of the major types of aircraft used by the U.S. Air Force, Navy, Marines, and Army; Aircraft armament, with a detailed look at the missiles and precisio n-g ui ded mu nitions or 'smart bombs' that were used with such effectiveness; The Tomahawk, or TLAM cruise missile; Each of the eight aircraft carriers that participated in Operation Desert Shield and Desert Storm; The tactics used to find and des troy th e Sc ud m issiles; The air-to-air victories by the coalition aircraft (including a complete list of confirmed kills); Why the Iraqi Air Force 'ran for the border' instead of posing a threat to coalition forces; Why the news media made so ma ny te chni cal m istak es while trying to report on the war effort; The real reason why the B-1 bomber and other combat aircraft were not used in Operation Desert Storm."
