Conway Maritime Press, London, 1999, first edition.
286 pp, small 8vo (7 7/8" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0851777694 B&w illustrations, colour plates. "Six centuries before the birth of Christ, people began to imagine an immense land at the bottom of the world, a land of marvels, of enormo us wealth and mystery. 'Discovery' is the story of the quest which compelled men in small ships to traverse unknown seas, to endure extraordinary hardships, to slowly unveil the sixth continent. The story begins among Greek philosophers on the s h o res of the Mediterranean. It ends two millenia later in the vast Southern Ocean. Lucidly and concisely, Miriam Estensen tells an absorbing tale of mapmakers and lonely caravels, Spanish hidalgos and Dutch merchants, remote coasts and castawa ys , bu ccaneers and dreamers. At the heart of 'Discovery' is the power of a myth and the adventures and sacrifices of those who pursued it, for this is the story of how an imagined place was made real, how the speculations of visionaries became Te rra I nco gnita and then Australia." Simon and Schuster, New York, 1971, first American edition.
136 pp, small 4to (10 1/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. B&w and colour photographs, floor plans. "The reputation of Richard Neutra (1892-1970) is founded on his finely executed and superbly landscaped domestic buildings. Born and educated in Vi enna, where he was influenced by the leading European architects, notably Adolph Loos, Neutra developed the intense dislike of ornament that was to characterize his work. He emigrated to the United States in 1923 and in 1926 established a pract i c e in California where the majority of his buildings are to be found. His highly individual style is characterized by the adoption of plate glass for exterior walls, combined with overhanging eaves, outrigged columns and integrated pools, and b y th e e xploitation of the subtropical California vegetation to create privacy." Slight browning to edges of textblock, two very small light stains on bottom of text block, tiny light foxing marks on top of text block, slight waviness at top edge of pi ct ur e pages. Dust jacket has very light browning on spine and along top edge, light edge wrinkling along top edge, tiny hole at top of front flap-fold, light rubbing, small corner crease on front flap.
