FIGHTER SQUADRON AT GUADALCANAL., Brand, Max.
10 Brand, Max. FIGHTER SQUADRON AT GUADALCANAL.
Naval Institute Press, Annapolis, 1996.
231 pp, 8vo (8 1/2" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 1557500886 B&w photographs, maps. "(A)fter more than fifty years and a string of fortunate coincidences, Brand's stirring account of the 212th Marine Fighter Squadron's operations at Guadalc anal in 1942 has been set in print. Once of the very first examples of oral history, this treasure trove of personal and historical detail was the result of hundreds of hours of interviews with the pilots and ground crew of the 212th, as wel l a s w i th Marine infantrymen and Navy personnel, conducted soon after the events took place. Stories of thrilling, yet deadly, air-to-air combat are recounted in the words of the men who were there - who also share their innermost thoughts abo ut fe ar , c ou rage, and their resolve to defeat the Japanese. Lost when Brand was killed while covering the Italian campaign for Harper's magazine, this unique and important find wuld never have appeared in print except for a meeting of squadro n v e ter ans a nd the author's daughter. Graced with the poetic spirit and descriptive powers of his well-loved novels, Brand's account deserves a place among the classics of World War II literature for both its literary merit and its rich legac y of p erso nal ins igh ts i nto one of the pivotal campaigns of the Pacific War. In addition to being a revealing and informative historical bonanza, this work serves as a dramatic, inspirational testament to the men of an outstanding squadron wh o tri ump hed u nder dur ess, and to their legendary squadron commander, Lt. Col. Harold (Joe) Bauer, who was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor." Dust jacket has light rubbing. Very Good+/Very Good+

Osprey, London, 1991, first edition.
128 pp, 11 7/8" H, hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 1855321513 Profuesly illustrated with colour photographs. "The 'son' of the Northrop YF-17 Cobra, the Hornet grew both in weight and capability after being ordered by the Navy to replace the vene rable Vought A-7 Corsair II. Now an integral part of the modern carrier air wing, the F/A-18 has dramatically increased the capabilities of fighter and attack squadrons already embarked aboard the Navy's 15-strong carrier fleet. Not all Hornet s s p otted in American skies are Navy property though, the 'flying leathernecks' of the US Marine Corps having received their first F/A-18s at virtually the same time as the 'blue water' force. Over a dozen USMC squadrons are now equipped with th e v er sa tile Hornet. Travelling further afield, Canada, Australia, Spain and South Korea have all chosen the F/A-18 to fulfill the fighter/attack requirements of their respective air forces past the year 2000. (This book) takes you aboard ship w it h a f ron tline Navy squadron as they patrol the barren expanses of the Atlantic, or takes you on a scrub skimming attack sortie over the parched wastelands of the 'outback' with the Royal Australian Air Force." 15 Buker, George E. SWAMP SAILORS: RIVERINE WARFARE IN THE EVERGLADES 1835-1842.
University of Florida, Gainesville, 1975.
152 pp, large 8vo (9 1/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0813003520 Map endpapers, b&w illustrations. "Until the Second Seminole War the United States Navy had generally employed the Federalist doctrine (cruiser-commerce-raiding), but the un iqueness of this Indian conflict caused the navy to adopt a new offensive strategy. For the first time in history the American Navy was pitted against a nonmaritime foe. There were no single merchantmen to attack; there were no cruisers t o e n g a g e in single-ship combat; there were no enemy fleets to be repelled from the nation's harbors. Instead, there were Indians practicing guerilla tactics in a watery environment - the Everglades of Florida. Athough it was not apparent at t h e be gi nn in g o f the war, the navy's only hope for victory lay in the development of a strategy for riverine warfare. It was a kind of warfare that demanded specially trained combat groups, organized for sustained land/sea operations. I t r equ ir ed jo int ac tio n wi th the army. It called for a naval command familiar with setting up and directing complex operations and diverse forces to achieve an overall objective. In developing a strategy of riverine warfare, United States Nav y po lic y e volv ed f rom a de fe nsi ve to an offensive position, from a society of highly individualistic and inflexible sea captains into a well-meshed cooperative unit capable of working not only alone but also with the army. Between 1835 and 1842, the nav y cam e of age. Her e i s a dramatic account of that vital time, enhanced by an awesome setting, which will engage and enlighten both the scholar of naval history and the armchair sailor."
