THE BRITISH SOLDIER IN AMERICA: A SOCIAL HISTORY OF MILITARY LIFE IN THE REVOLUTIONARY PERIOD., Frey, Sylvia R.
10 Frey, Sylvia R. THE BRITISH SOLDIER IN AMERICA: A SOCIAL HISTORY OF MILITARY LIFE IN THE REVOLUTIONARY PERIOD.
University of Texas Press, Austin, 1981.
211 pp, large 8vo (9 1/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0292780400 Tables. "In her investigation of the social history of the common British soldier in the era of the American Revolution, Sylvia Frey has extensively surveyed recruiting reco rds, contemporary training manuals, statutes, and memoirs in an attempt to provide insight into the soldier's 'life and mind'. In the process she has discovered more about the common soldier than anyone thought possible: his size, age, an d g e n e r a l physical condition, his personal economics and daily existence. Her findings dispel the traditional assumpution that the army was made up largely of criminals and social misfits. Special attention is given to soldiering as an occ up a ti on . F oc us in g on two of the major campaigns of the war....Frey describes the human face of war, with particular emphasis on the physical and psychic strains of campaigning in the eighteenth century. Perhaps the most important part of the w ork is t he ana lys is of the moral and material factors which induced men to accept the high risks of soldiering. Frey rejects the traditional assumption that soldiers were motivated to fight exclusively by fear and force and argues inst ead tha t th e pr ima ry moti vati on to battle was generated by regimental esprit, which in the eighteenth century substituted for patriotism. After analyzing the sources of esprit, she concludes that it was the sustaining force for morale in a lo ng a nd d iscou ragin g wa r. This book is a contribution to our understanding of the eighteenth century and should appeal not only to military historians but also to social and economic historians and to those interested in the history of medic ine." "The English Civil Wars represent the most vital watershed in British history, effectively extinguishing the vestiges of feudalism and originating the concepts of constitutional monarchy and standing army. This history concentrates upon the military aspects (of the three distinct wars of the period). In addition to a detailed and chronological account of the campaigning, and insights into the characters of the military and political leades, the book includes an important section on a subject frequently neglected: on how an army was formed, how its members were recruited (or impressed), how regiments were raised, trained and equipped, how an army was provisioned, marshalled in the field, how its infantry and cavalry were employed, how its artillery was managed, and ultimately how it fought, advance d o r r e treated. In all these matters, as in the chronological account of the war which follows, most extensive use has been made of contemporary drill-books, manuals, accounts by military theorists and practical soldiers, eye-witness accoounts a n d me m oi rs ." Compendium, London, n.d.
64 pp, 10 7/16" H, soft cover. ISBN 1902579070 Profusely illustrated in colour. "A large part of the appeal of AFVs in general is the enormous scope for presenting a highly individual interpretation of a military vehicle subject. The way the mod eller chooses to pile the necessary guns, ammunition, ropes, chains, tools, radio aerials and so on onto a tank will remain a singular, highly personal contribution to the modelling hobby. In this series of books we attempt to show you how to g e t t he best out of plastic models of AFVs and offer some tips on construction, customising and finishing. We have not specified any particular brand of paint, adhesive or materials simply because models and accessory ranges change their trade na me s, ar e constantly added to - or, occasionally, are withdrawn from the market altogether. And of course general availability in certain countries varies to a considerable degree so we are leaving it to the modeller, wherever he or she may be lo cat ed t o s earch out the tools of the trade according to local supply." from the Introduction.
