SPLENDOUR AT COURT: DRESSING FOR ROYAL OCCASIONS SINCE 1700., Arch, Nigel and Marschner, Joanna.
1 Arch, Nigel and Marschner, Joanna. SPLENDOUR AT COURT: DRESSING FOR ROYAL OCCASIONS SINCE 1700.
London Unwin Hyman, London, (1987), Ist edition. 1987 0713526610 / 9780713526615 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good
128 pp, 10 1/2" H. Profusely illustrated in b&w and colour with photographs, reproductions, drawings. "(P)rovides a lively picture of contrasting courtly scenes through the ages. It takes us from the paralysingly formal Court of Queen Anne to the outlandish ostentation of fifty years later when the Prince of Wales's dancing feet twinkled with 30,000 Pounds worth of diamonds attached to his shoe buckles. It conjures up the social butterflies of the Victorian age and a young debutante in the 1920's having difficulty tucking the essential three white feathers into her fashionably bobbed hair style. The fairy tale dresses and gold encrusted uniforms described and illustrated in this book have echoed or defied the fashions of the world right up to the present day. The last debutante to be presented at Court left Buckingham Palace in 1958, but in ceremonies such as the State Opening of Parliament courtly costume and tradition still linger with us." Spine is slightly twisted, minor toning on pastedowns. Dust jacket has light wear at bottom of front flap-fold, light edge wrinkling - mainly at top of rear panel, very soft crease down rear panel.

VENICE AND NORTH-EASTERN ITALY., Whelpton, Eric.
2 Whelpton, Eric. VENICE AND NORTH-EASTERN ITALY.
Robert Hale, London, 1965, first edition.
190 pp, 8vo (8 3/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. B&w plates, maps. "Eric Whelpton, who has been living in, or wandering through, Italy for a large part of his life, believes that even Venice itself, outside the tourist area, still remains to be discovered. To the north-east and to the south of Venice there stretch long sandy beaches where the sea is clear and buoyant. Further along the plain, within a few miles of Trieste, are rocky bays and pineclad slopes. To the south, outside the bo undaries of Venetia, there are the popular resorts of Rimini and Cattolica; but on the way there is Ravenna with its works of art from a civilization that existed thirteen centuries ago. Inland again is Mantua, one of the loveliest of art c i t i e s a n d probably the least known. To the north is Verona, a town of Palladian palaces; and Asolo, built by a queen of Cyprus, and beloved of the Brownings. Lake Garda is described too, and the Dolomites, the rose-coloured mountains that g ua rd t he n o rt h- eastern frontiers of Italy. Eric Whelpton can be relied upon to give practical advice to would-be travellers to Venice and its delightful surroundings, and he may even tempt the armchair traveller to book a passage to this ci ty of can als ." S mal l c rease at top edge of preliminary pages, small bump at top/bottom of spine. Dust jacket has light edge wear, wrinkling at bottom of spine - less at top of spine and at top/bottom of flap-folds, light rubbing, light fa ding on sp ine. Ve ry Goo d/Ve ry G ood-
