3 Garrison, Webb. FRIENDLY FIRE IN THE CIVIL WAR; MORE THAN 100 TRUE STORIES OF COMRADE KILLING COMRADE.
Rutledge Hill, Nashville, Tennessee, 1999.
229 pp, 9" H, soft cover. ISBN 1558537368 B&w photographs, maps/battle plans, reproductions. "On May 2, 1863, Stonewall Jackson was on the verge of the greatest victory of his career. Shortly before 10 p.m. he rode through the woods near Chancel lorsville, Virginia, to find where the Federals had established their line. As he returned, his own men, in the noise and confusion, opened fire, wounding Jackson several times. One of the Civil War's first heroes died eight days later. St o n e w a l l Jackson's death is but one example of Confederate killing Confederte or Yankee killing Yankee. No war was as intense and chaotic as the American Civil War. (The author) has brought together Jackson's story and 150 other instances of f ri en dl y fi re in this unique book that strips away the romanticism of the Civil War." Interior - clean and tight with no previous ownership marks. Exterior - very light edge wear - mainly on spine, tiny scuff on front cover. Very Good

4 Judd, David W. Illustrations from drawings by Lieut. L.C. Mix. THE STORY OF THE THIRTY-THIRD N.Y.S. VOLS: OR TWO YEARS CAMPAIGNING IN VIRGINIA AND MARYLAND.
mBenton & Andrews, Rochester, 1864, Ist edition.
349 pp, + 76 pp. (Appendices) + ads, small 8vo, hard cover (dark green boards with embossed floral design at corners, gilt decoration - sabre, rifle and wreath - on front cover, repeated on rear cover without gilt) - no dust jacket. B&w illustrations, including tissue-covered frontispiece. "This volume does not propose to review the causes, rise and progress of the unhappy civil strife, which for more than two years has rent our land; neither is it designed to describe all the operations which have marked the war in the single department of Virginia and Maryland. It aims merely, as the title page indicates, at giving a narrative of one of the many Regiments which the Empire State has sent into the field, together with a description of the various campaigns in which it participated...The plan, as will readily be seen, comprises separate sketches of each company until merged into the Regiment; the regimental history from the period of its organization at Elmira in May, 1861, until its return from the war, May, 1863; brief biographies of the various officers, and muster rolls of the men...A double interest attaches to the numerous engravings which embellish the volume, from the fact that instead of being gotten up to ordr, they were 'drawn on the spot' by a skilful artist - an officer of the Regiment - who participated in all the scenes through which it passed. They constitute in themselves a pictorial history of the first two years of the Eastern campaign." The Regiment participated in the battles of Williamsburg, Mechanicsville, Golden's Farm, Second Mechanicsville, Gaines' Farm, Malvern, Antietam, Fredericksburg and Salem Heights among others. Interior - pages browning lightly, free front endpaper missing, ghost signature on preliminary, light scattered foxing on rear endpapers, erased pencil numbers on rear pastedown, otherwise clean and tight with no other ownership marks. Exterior - wear at corners, cloth missing from top edge of spine, bottom edge is fraying but basically all there, slight fading to spine color, protected in mylar sleeve. G+

MEDIAEVAL FLOOR TILES., Wight, Jane A.
12 Wight, Jane A. MEDIAEVAL FLOOR TILES.
St. Martin's Press, New York, 1975, first American edition.
179 pp, large 8vo (9 3/8" H), hard cover in dust jacket. B&w and colour illustrations. "Mediaeval floor tiles have been unjustly neglected both in print and in situ, and (this) book, is, astonishingly, the first full-scale appreciation of the subj ect since 1858. The tiles themselves have been maltreated over the centuries and it is only comparatively recently that their great variety - and often beauty - and the sophistication of some of the methods of production have been appreciated. S o m e Victorian ceramic firms faultlessly and relentlessly copied a number of mediaeval designs - a compliment that Miss Wight shows the originals could well have done without as they were likely to be prised up to make way for the glossy nineteen th -c en tury copies. The book described the methods of manufacture of the various types of mediaeval tile from the earliest mosaic to the elaboration of the later inlaid varieties, and traces the development of design in the main areas of tile ma k ing . Mis s Wight has drawn many examples herself and the groups of illustrations in the book show clearly how a particular subject or symbol - for instance the fleur-de-lis of the Virgin Mary - was used and developed in an incredibly wide variety o f wa ys . F or the first time the mass of tiles is approached with an enthusiasm for their artistic achievement as well as their technical categorization, and the Gazetteer lists a comforting number of places where - if we take the trouble to lo ok downw ard as w ell as upward - we can still see examples of most of the types of mediaeval tile." Very small light stain on bottom of text block. Dust jacket has two very small edge tears archivally taped, minor edge wrinkling, faint soft crea se down f ront panel . Very Good+/Very Good
