BEYOND THE MYTH: THE STORY OF JOAN OF ARC., Brooks, Polly Schoyer.
3 Brooks, Polly Schoyer. BEYOND THE MYTH: THE STORY OF JOAN OF ARC.
New York J.B. Lippincott 1990 03973242257 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good- Signed by Author
176 pp, 9 1/4" H. B&w illustrations. Signed by author on half title page. "Inspired by her love for France, by her determination to see the rightful king rule, and especially by her private visions and voices, Joan (of Arc) overcame the doubts of everyone from her parents to the king himself. Within a year Joan led the French to a resounding victory at Orleans and made possible the coronation of Charles VII in the cathedral of Reims. But after her glorious triumph, conflicts in the French camp, bad advice, and perhaps Joan's own headstrong nature brought her to defeat and finally to imprisonment and trial for heresy and witchcraft. Burned as a witch by the English after what was largely a political trial, she was later cleared of heresy, and eventually canonized. She is now the most popular French heroine and saint. (The author) has sifted through the records of Joan's trial, examined the studies of major historians, and roamed the streets of Domremy to find out who Joan really was. Neither a cardboard saint nor - as few still think - a witch, Joan emerges as a lively, emotional, determined person who believed so strongly in her cause that she overcame every obstacle she faced. Here is a new Joan for a new generation ready to question old legends and to marvel again at her courage and faith." Part of a series of history books aimed at the teenage reader. Light wrinkling at top of spine, previous owner's signed bookplate on front pastedown. Dust jacket has very light wrinkling at top/bottom of hinges and flap-folds, a few small light line indentations on front panel and on rear flap, slight fading to spine color.

She was everywhere, attending costume balls, visiting an aging Sir John A. Macdonald, interviewing the fiery suffragette Susan B. Anthony, covering sensational murder trials. 111 pp, 8 7/8" H. B&w drawings. "Howard Dundas casts an irreverent eye on many of the sacred cows of yesteryear. With humorous insights, he lays bare many of the underlying assumptions so dear to our forefathers. He touches on many issues which are still current in the West: colonial attitudes, male chauvinism, the French fact in Manitoba, the revolution in social and sexual mores. Mentioned in passing are the deals past governments made with the CPR and the HBC, to say nothing of the exploitation of Westerners for Eastern interests. Whether Dundas stretches the truth or not, what matters is that he expresses the feelings of the average intelligent Winnipeg citizen growing up and learning in the most lively and witty of Canadian cities." 318 pp, 9 1/4" H. "(T)he culmination of the writing career of a man who has struggled all his life against social injustice and irrelevant religious orthodoxies. This book is more than the ecumenical discuss-ion of sex-related issues from a minister's point of view; it is a candid commentary on our time - a time of sexual revolution and human turmoil when old values are questioned and new answers must be found. By analyzing the historical and social aspects of sex, sexuality and sexism and the role of the clergy within the framework of the Judeo-Christian tradition, the author has woven his thoughts into a colorful fabric; his wisdom, wit and candor, combined with his superb literary skills, shine through on every page. The autobiographical data and references are an added bonus, providing insight into the nature of this visionary philosopher and lover of humankind. Regardless of your faith, and whether you attend church or synagogue regularly, sometimes or never, you will not be indifferent or bored when you read what the rabbi has to say." Book is cery clean. 15 Frank, Barbara E. MANDE POTTERS & LEATHERWORKERS: ART AND HERITAGE IN WEST AFRICA.
Smithsonian Institution Press, Washington, (1998), Ist printing.
192 pp, 4to (11 1/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 1560987944 Profusely illustrated with b&w and color photos and drawings. "Among the Mande-speaking groups dispersed throughout much of West Africa, certain artists - including potters and l eatherworkers - form a spiritually powerful social class in which gender determines craft specialization. Ceramic water jars and cooking pots are made only by the wives and female relatives of blacksmiths. Leather objects such as knife shea t h s , a m ulet cases, and, more recently, western-style shoes and bags are produced by male leatherworkers. While these objects display features common to those of other West African groups, the manner in which they are produced has remained dis ti nc tl y M an de . Analyzing the work of Mande potters and leatherworkers, (the author) argues that studying craft technologies in addition to object styles is essential to reconstructing the art heritage of an ethnically complex region. Drawing on ar cha eo lo gic al and historical evidence as well as her field research in Mali, she shows how tools and practices such as potters' use of convex molds and leatherworkers' adherence to specific knife blade shapes serve to distinguish the good s ma de b y Ma nde ar tist s f rom those of neighboring groups. She also discusses the pride the potters take in their healing and spiritual knowledge, and the sense of difference between craftsmen who specialize exclusively in leatherworking and those who doubl e as bar ds an d mu sicians. Examining the roles of Mande leatherworkers and potters in the rise and fall of empires, the development of trans-Saharan trade networks, and the spread of Islam, Frank questions the 'one-tribe, one-st yle' i nterp retati ons t hat h ave do minat ed studies of West African art. Focusing on two traditions that have been little studied, (this book) explores the complex, shifting relationships among the identities of Mande craftspeople, the objects they cr eate, and the techn ologie s they use." By comparison, their male counterparts have invariably been accorded most attention and given the status of innovators. (This book) is the first comprehensive study of the subject, and makes a significant contribution towards redressing the balance. 18 Lampe, David. THE LAST DITCH. THE SECRETS OF THE NATIONWIDE BRITISH RESISTANCE ORGANIZATION AND THE NAZI PLANS FOR THE OCCUPATION OF BRITAIN 1940-1944.
Cassell, London, 1968, first edition.
219 pp, 8vo (8 1/2" H), hard cover in dust jacket. B&w photographs, drawings, maps. "(T)he first detailed study of what is known to have been the intentions on both sides (if the Germans had occupied Britian in 1940). Based largely on newly resea rched material and years of persistent detective work, it investigates the German plans for Occupied Britain and, much more startling, the British answer. It would have been a harsh occupation, harsher perhaps than the Nazi rule in Eastern Europ e , as the stark content of the German draft orders and decrees show only too plainly. Mass deportation of the able-bodied male population, wholesale appropriations of the country's agriculture, mineral and industrial produce, these and more would h av e reduced Britain to a starved and barren land. Few could have escaped oppression, and the notorious Gestapo Arrest List for Great Britain, here published in full for the first time since its distribution to senior Gestapo officers in 1940, sho ws ho w wide the Nazi net was to be spread. What would Britain have done? Mr. Lampe has been made privy to the secrets of Europe's first and best-trained Resistance movement. All over Britain its members went quietly about their daily jobs, b ut, by nig ht, they moved in stealth about a darkened Britain, training, practising, testing their ability to sabotage, to spy and to kill. They took 'holidays' at a country house in Berkshire to acquire murderous skills they then taught on their o wn h ome gro und. Caches of arms and explosives, skilfully constructed hide-outs were established in ever-growing numbers. A Resistance wireless network - never detected by the powerful German monitoring service - was set up and manned. (This) i s a s tory with out a climax, for although the vaguely named 'Auxiliary Units' reached an unparalleled peak of efficiency, they never went into action. The important thing is that the Resistance was ready and waiting. It was the last ditch of Bri tain's defe nce in 1940, and before it was crossed it meant the Germans to pay dearly." 20 Loudan, Jack. THE HELL-RAKES.
Books For You, London, 1967, first edition.
192 pp, 8vo (8" H), hard cover in dust jacket. B&w plates. "It has been said that the two most fascinating subjects in the world are sex and the eighteenth century. The story of eighteenth century British rakery is certainly fascinating; it is al so shocking. London had numerous secret clubs for depravity and debauchery; the notorious Hell Fire Club organised elaborate ritualistic orgies in which leading politicians and public figures of the day took part; roistering aristocrats vi e d a s t o the number of young girls they could seduce; 'Madams' produced child virgins for the dissolute gentry; the London Stock Exchange had its private 'harem' of prostitutes; beautiful young courtesans were exchanged or given as presents by t he i r no b le p r otectors. Satirical prints and broadsheets depicted the moral disorder of the times. The politicians were, in the main, corrupt. The Georgian king were themselves licentious. Highwaymen infested the countryside, and being rob bed b y foo tp ads wa s the least of one's dangers in the towns and cities where gangs of young 'Mohocks' inflicted terrible injuries and humiliations on their victims, male and female, for what would now be called 'kicks'. Yet, in the main, the rake s w er e me n o f gr eat in tellect, wit and culture who brought to their libertinism the stylised elegance of the Georgians. And there can be no doubt that the period has an infectious vitality...." Bump to bottom corner of front board - sma ll bu mp t o t op ed ge o f fro nt b oar d.
