London J.M. Dent & Sons Hard Cover Very Good Very Good
226 pp, 6 7/8" H. No publication date, but an early edition as there is no mention of the First World War. Map endpapers, decorated title page. Profusely illustrated with colour and b&w maps, plus 10 plates depicting coins. "(T)he present volume deals with the countries of Asia, whose history and geography, and whose possibilities great and grave, are alike reflected in the maps and charts that follow. When Queen Elizabeth (I) granted to certain merchants of London a charter that gave them a roving commission to trade in the East Indies, she could not foresee the immense developments that were to rise from that adventurous commerce between east and west. The successive maps of India with their frontier changes mark the gradual advance of an old world toward the new one knit by powerful mutual ties to the Isle of Britain; and recently we have seen what it is to be hoped will open a greater era for those regions, marked by a return to the old captial of Delhi, and a resuming of ancient rites which first gained their symbolism in those lands. But Asia, as Japan has taught us and as China will undoubtedly teach us again, has her own destiny to bear out, apart from our European interests and politics; and it is in that aspect we need to study her on the lines laid down and made clear and positive in this volume. It is not the military records, the charts of mutinies and battle-fields, interesting as they are, which are alone important; but those showing the conditions, physical and climatic, of the country; the dispersion of the tongues, the sites of the old religions, the wealth and tillage of the earth with its fruits, grain and minerals, its rice fields and tea plantations; the prevalance of rain, sun and trade-winds; and the course of the sea-roads that affect its human and industrial life...In this Asian Atlas, of small dimensions as it requires to be to fit its pocket, Irkutsk in the north, 'far Mandalay', the details of the East and West Indies, the route of Marco Polo, coasts like the Carnatic, towns like Lucknow and Cawnpore, Lhasa, 'the Forbidden City' of Tibet, and Matsuye, the old capital of Idzumo, which Lafcadio Hearn describes, all have their record." While Cambodian textiles may justifiably be regarded as works of art in Western terms, their cultural relevance and vitality, which defines their quintessential character, is only beginning to be be appreciated and understood. This is the first book to document and explain this rich textile and costume tradition. Written for collectors, curators, travellers, textile artists and aficionados, it identifies and explains the essential role textiles play in traditional Cambodian life, society and religious practices. Lavishly illustrated with over 300 colour images, the book includes images of antique textiles held in both private collections and major public institutions, historic images and specially-commissioned line drawings and diagrams. New York Walker 2010 0802717713 / 9780802717719 First American Edition Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good
330 pp, 9 1/2" H. B&w illustrations. "English has become the world's lingua franca - the most widely spoken in human history, (but the author argues that it) stands to be displaced as the world's language. The primary causes for the spread of lingua francas over time have been military empire-building, networks of commercial enterprise, and missionary religion. Ostler explores each of these inspirations through the lens of civilizations spanning the globe, from China and India to Persia, Africa, and Europe. Two long-term trends emerge that suggest the reasons for ultimate decline: Elites are the prime users of lingua francas, yet democratization in politics and rising equality in society tend to bring them down. At present, international English worldwide is spoken not by majorities, but by elites; and the countries where English is spoken natively are losing their command of the world's economic heights. Soon, the rising wealth of states such as Brazil, Russia, India, and China will shrink any international preference for English. These trends are now reinforced by a new development in modern technology. There will soon be instant translation among major languages, enhancing the global usefulness of mother tongues and lessening the necessity for any future lingua franca to be learned. Increasingly, each nation will speak as it pleases, and yet the world will understand." Minor wrinkling at top/bottom of spine. Dust jacket has minor edge wrinkling light at bottom of front flap, tiny tear at bottom of front flap-fold - archivally taped.

302 pp, large 8vo (9 7/8" H). B&w photographs, b&w and colour maps. "A forgotten air force in a forgotten war. This history finally addresses in detail the exploits of the Royal Air Force's youngest Corps, the RAF Regiment, in the campaign in South-East Asia. A dedicated and specialist ground force for active defence of airfields, the Regiment played a vital and significant role in the two major battles for Burma. The struggle at Imphal ranks alongside Stalingrad and Alamein in its significance for the defeat of the Axis. Here, the Regiment patrolled the airstrips and jungle hills and ensured they were clear of Japanese intruders. In March 1945 the Regiment participated in the masterstroke of the Burma campaign; the thrust for, and capture of Meiktila. That the Regiment was able to carry out its tasks so effectively and efficiently despite inadequate numbers, outdated equipment and often with a significant proportion of the unit debilitated with tropical ailments, is a tribute to the diligence, tenacity, persistence and professionalism of its officers and airmen. The book draws on the operations record books, diaries and recollections of the men who served inthe RAF Regiment in South-East Asia Command. It is strongly supported by maps and diagrams and is illustrated with many hitherto unpublished photographs. Small area of very faint line indentations on free front endpaper, small bump at bottom corner of front board. Dust jacket has light edge wrinkling - mainly at top/bottom of spine, very faint line indentations on front and rear panels.
