NAPOLEON'S MARSHALS., Delderfield, R.F. (Ronald Frederic Delderfield.)
6 Delderfield, R.F. (Ronald Frederic Delderfield.) NAPOLEON'S MARSHALS.
Philadelphia Chilton 1966 Second Printing Hard Cover Very Good Very Good
242 pp, 9 1/4" H. B&w illustrations. "Napoleon, that master strategist, created twenty-six Marshals of France between the years 1804 and 1815. These men, who held the highest positions in the Empire after Napoleon himself, came from diverse, and often humble backgrounds. Among the twenty-six were officers, sergeant majors, rankers, apprentices, a farmer's boy, a brewer, a poet, a smuggler, an actor, a barber, and a prince. The two qualities they all had in common were courage and ambition. During the years when Napoleon was conqueror of most of Europe, the marshals acquired titles and great riches, and in the end there was only one who was not to some extent corrupted by greed or ambition, and who remained loyal to the man who had elevated them all to power. Through their stories, and the eyes of the author, the entire panorama of French history, from the first days of the French Revolution until the restoration of the Bourbons, is seen. The color and excitement of the great battles, the strategy, the roll of history is here in (this book), the first to follow the actual careers of the marshals from July, 1789, until their deaths." Light cigarette odor, a few pages with small a soft wrinkle at top corner, very light browning to top and fore-edge of text block, minor wrinkling at top/bottom of spine. Dust jacket has very light browning at top edge, very light edge wear/wrinkling, one small edge tear archivally taped.

THE HISTORY OF THE SUFFOLK REGIMENT 1946-1959., Godfrey, F.A., Major.
9 Godfrey, F.A., Major. THE HISTORY OF THE SUFFOLK REGIMENT 1946-1959.
Leo Cooper, London, (1988), Ist edition.
276 pp, large 8vo (9 3/16" H), hard cover in dust jacket. B&w photos, maps. "...covers the Regiment in action in Palestine, India, Malaya, Trieste and Cyprus, as well as when soldiering in Egypt, Greece, BAOR and at home. A complete chapter is devoted to the activities of the Suffolk and Cambridgeshire Territorial battalions...Each chapter describes a tour of duty of one battalion in a particular posting and is divided into two parts: the first paints a general picture of the role of the battalion showing why it was there and what it was like to be there with some mention of events of note. The second part of the chapter contains a detailed chonological account of the experiences of the battalion...In Malaya the Regiment won for itself between 1949 and 1953 a reputation unequalled throughout the whole 12-year Emergency there by any other British battalion. While the chapter devoted to Malaya provides the core of the book the other chapters reveal a continous thread of devotion to duty and the author is not exaggerating when he speaks in his preface of 'a quiet, grim determination in the face of extremely hostile conditions' to do a worthwhile job as being characteristic of the Suffolk Regiment until the very end." Minor browning to edges of text block. Dust jacket has small ghost sticker mark on inside of front flap, minor edge wrinkling. VG+/VG+

GALLANT GENTLEMEN: A PORTRAIT OF THE BRITISH OFFICER 1600-1956., Turner, E.S.
17 Turner, E.S. GALLANT GENTLEMEN: A PORTRAIT OF THE BRITISH OFFICER 1600-1956.
Michael Joseph, London, 1956, first edition.
345 pp, 8vo (8 3/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. Errata slip tipped in at title page. B&w illustrations. "(A) lively social study of the British officer and gentleman - naval and military - from the seventeenth century to the present day, when the Royal Air Force arrived to make its own charactestic contribution to the story. In late Stuart times he was a man with a personal stake in the country; in Georgian times he might well be a schoolboy (majors were flogged at Eton); and today he i s quite possibly a conscript. Here is a rounded study of the officer, with all his traditional virtues and foibles; of men who founded and defended an empire, often with small thanks from Parliament and less from the Treasury; of sprigs from t h e s c hools (and later from the crammers) who lorded it over beys and khans; of men who kept their own code of honour, worrying Parliament by their duelling and outraging 'The Times' with their practical jokes. The purchase system (with the a d ve rt is i ng o f regiments for sale in the 'Morning Post'), the jostling of captains and admirals for prize money, the rise of Sanhurst and 'The Shop', the oddities of mess etiquette, the determination of self-respecting officers never to be sen t to the St af f C oll ege, the collapse of the champagne standard, the snubbing of subalterns ('warts') and midshipmen by their seniors - these are some of the high spots in a rich history. Here, on parade, are the bluff 'tarpaulin' and the lispi ng ca valr yman , t he r anke r, the 'knut' and Colonel Blimp....down to the 'Two Types' of the Westen Desert." Christmas gift inscription on free front end paper, very light edge wear, very light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, book slightly co cke d, l ight brown ing to ed ges o f text block.
