London Brassey's (UK) 1992 1857530403 / 9781857530407 First English Edition Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good
235 pp, large 8vo (9 1/4" H). "While the 'traditional' threat of East-West military confrontation appears much reduced, events in Yugoslavia have removed any complacency about the stability of the new Europe unfolding around us. New threats - territorial quarrels, nationalism, and the demise of the Soviet Union as a unitary state - require a radically new approach to European security. The creation of an effective security system will be highly dependent on the trust and co-operation between the former Warsaw Treaty Organisation countries and their new-found NATO allies. As their title suggests, the Vienna Negotiations on Confidence- and Security-Building Measures aimed to do exactly this, by fostering greater openness about military organisation and activity. John Borawski's history of the negotiations provides a detailed analysis of the issues involved, indicating the likely direction of future talks following the watershed March-July 1992 CSCE follow-up meeting in Helsinki, and highlighting their extreme relevance to the problems confronting European policy-makers today. As they continue to seek an alternative to the limited, hardware-based negotiations of the past, 'Security for a New Europe' grows in importance as a source of ideas for problems old and new." Dust jacket has very light edge wrinkling, light rubbing.

The famous Good Friday processions at Seville, the great Prado museum, the caves of Altamira, the gipsies, the appearance of a land still recovering from the ravages of civil war - all these are subjects for Frank Clune's vivid description. He writes, too, of Spain's great past; of the Christian Reconquest after the period of Moorish domination; of Ferdinand and Isabella, the 'Catholic Sovereigns'; of Magellan and Columbus; of Cervantes and El Greco. THE REAL FIGARO: THE EXTRAORDINARY CAREER OF CARON DE BEAUMARCHAIS., Cox, Cynthia.
6 Cox, Cynthia. THE REAL FIGARO: THE EXTRAORDINARY CAREER OF CARON DE BEAUMARCHAIS.
Coward-McCann, New York, 1963, first American edition.
212 pp, 8vo (8 3/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. B&w plates. "(A) biography of a brilliant and impudent man living in eighteenth-century France: Caron de Beaumarchais. It was a life of fantastic adventure. Inventor, secret agent, politician, c ourtier, publisher and supplier of arms to the American colonies, Beaumarchais also wrote plays. Music lovers enchanted by Mozart's 'The Marriage of Figaro" and Rossini's 'The Barber of Seville' remember that they are based on the brillian t c o m e d i e s of Beaumarchais. Born Pierre Caron in 1732, Beaumarchais was the son of a prosperous Parisian clockmaker. As a child, he was apprenticed to his father, became fairly famous in the field of watchmaking and invented several new an d c om pl ic at ed d ev ices. He soon found wider scope by buying an appointment at the Court of Louis XV, where he swiftly rose to the highest favor. The King sent him on a secret mission to Madrid, and he returned to find himself accused of for ge ry an d e mbe zzl eme nt. H e became emeshed in a series of legal actions in which he fought vigorously to maintain his honor. Louis XV, meanwhile, sent him secretly to London to stop a blackmailer from publishing scandal about the royal mist res s, Mada me d u Ba rry. Th e ne xt K ing, Louis XVI, gave him two similar missions; the first, to smother a scurrilous attempt to libel Marie-Antoinette, took him to London, Amsterdam and Vienna; the second, to recover some papers of the late K ing whi ch we re of expl osive impo rtanc e, in volved him in London with the extraordinary Chevalier d'Eon, a secret agent who, on occasion, wore female dress and was widely (but wrongly) believed to be a woman. While in England, Beaumarchais al lied him self w ith th e caus e of t he Ame rican coloni es; and when Louis XVI refused to aid the rebels openly, Beaumarchais organized a private firm to supply them with arms and munitions as well as ships, with astonishing results. Meanwhile, h is pl ay 'T he Barb er of S eville' had be en accl aimed and its sequel, 'The Marriage of Figaro', so audaciously mocked the Government that for five years the King forbade its performance. But when public readings spread its fame, and when the b an was reluc tantly l ifted, a ll Paris fought to see i t. Wh en the R evolution broke out, Beaumarchais witnessed the storming of the Bastille. In 1792 false rumors caused an hysterical mob to invade his ostentatious mansion; he escaped to a fr iend's house. Later he was arre sted, rel eased th rough inf luence of a woma n, and after further adventures he found himself a proscribed refugee in Hamburg. He returned to France in 1796 and died there three years later." A few small faint fo xing ma rks on free endpa pers, ligh t wrinklin g at top/ bottom of spine, very small dint at top edge of front board, tiny foxint marks at edges of illustration pages. Dust jacket has been price clipped, has light edge wear/wrinkling/creasing - m ainly at top/bo ttom of spi ne and flap -folds, tin y closed t ears at bo ttom of spine and on rear hinge, minor foxing on edges of flaps. LOVE AND THE SPANISH., Epton, Nina.
8 Epton, Nina. LOVE AND THE SPANISH.
London Cassell 1961 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good- B.S. Biro, dust jacket illustration.
216 pp, 8 3/4" H. B&w illustrations. "Spain is a country of Magdalenes and repentant Don Juans as well as of gay sinners. This sums up concisely and colourfully - as far as love can ever be summed up - what must be considered as the Spanish attitude to love both in the past and indeed at the present time, for it has changed remarkably little over the centuries, and only now has enlightened thought to some extent begun to free love from strangling conventions and taboos. This country has produced Don Juan the greatest lover of all time, one of the most passionate and violent of all love stories in 'Carmen', the Inquisition with its scenes of extreme punishment and tortured flesh, the charming court-ship rites like the Fiesta de San Antonio, and the tragic genius of Lorca, preoccupied with beauty and death. How is it possible to reconcile the passionate guitar-playing majo with the cold, unyielding figure of the Inquisitor? Miss Epton gives us the answer - no easy achievement, for the Spaniards have never been inclined to communicate personal feelings about love either in their art or in their literature, and this reticence and pride still persists. She has met every type of Spaniard, from intellectuals to prostitutes, from students to doctors, and she has questioned them tactfully but ruthlessly. As a result, she has laid bare the myth of Romantic Spain, revealing the fundamental difference between Galicia, more tolerant of human weakness, and the severer South, which is one of the most striking character-istics of love in Spain." Light fading to top/bottom edges of spine. Dust jacket has some very light edge wrinkling, light browning on spine and very light on flap-folds, very light soiling on rear panel.

10 Gates, David. THE SPANISH ULCER: A HISTORY OF THE PENINSULAR WAR.
George Allen & Unwin, London, (1986), Ist edition.
557 pp, 8vo, hard cover in dust jacket. Over 100 maps and nearly 50 contemporary illustrations. "Napoleon considered the war in the Peninsula so insignificant that he rarely bothered to bring to it his military genius, relying on his marshals instead, and simulteaneously launching his disastrous Russian campaign in 1812. In late 1813 Wellington's army crossed the Pyrennes into the mainland of France. The 'Spanish Ulcer' had helped to kill its host...a war of unexpected savagery, of carnage at times so great as to be comparable to the First World War. But it was also a guerilla war, fought on beautiful but difficult terrain, where problems of supply loomed large. The British Navy, dominant at sea after Trafalgar, was able to provide crucial support to the hard-pressed, ill-equipped and often outnumbered forces fighting the French...a serious assessment of the opposing generals and their troops...analyzing in detail the social and political background." 11 Glover, Michael. WELLINGTON'S PENINSULAR VICTORIES: BUSACO - SALAMANCA - VITORIA - NIVELLE. BRITISH BATTLE SERIES.
London B. T. Batsford 1963 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good - Good+
192 pp, 8vo (8 15/16" H). "In the course of the Peninsular War, Wellington became the most celebrated general in British history. When he landed in Lisbon in April 1809, however, there seemed little reason to suppose that the British could maintain their foothold in Portugal, still less to imagine that the French could be driven out of the Peninsula and across the Pyrenees. Since 1793 the British army had experienced a long succession of defeats and reverses. Before Wellington could take the field he had first to overhaul the entire organization of his forces. His allies' troops were ill-led, ill-trained and ill-equipped. His atttempts to co-operate with his Spanish colleagues were stultified by rivalry and distrust. Michael Glover has written a lucid narrative of the difficulties and set-backs of the five years' campaigning that brought the allies to Toulouse in April 1814. Against this background are full-scale accounts of the four battles - Busaco, Salamanca, Vitoria and the Nivelle - in which Wellington defeated his principal opponents of the War - Massena, Marmont, Jourdan and Soult. The officers and men who served in the Peninsula left behind them many absorbing and often moving eyewitness descriptions, and it is on these, no less than on his long acquaintance with the secondary sources of the history of the War, that (he) has based his study of the battles. The numerous illustrations, taken from the supreme period of military art, are themselves of outstanding interest and, with the six maps and plans in the text, complement a perceptive account of Wellington and his army." Light edge wear, previous owner's name stamp on front pastedown, light wrinkling at bottom of spine. Dust jacket is price clipped, has browning to the spine and edges, light to moderate edge wear/wrinkling, a few very small edge tears.

12 H.R.H. Princess Pilar of Bavaria and Major Desmond Chapman-Huston. Introuction by Aubrey F.G. Bell. DON ALFONSO XIII: A STUDY OF MONARCHY.
John Murray, London, 1931, first edition.
436 pp, 8vo (8 11/16" H), hard cover in dust jacket. Family tree, b&w plates. "King Alfonso is one of the most outstanding figures now alive, in contemporary political history, in sport, and in social life. He is much beloved and equally disliked , as recent events in Spain have proved. This study, written by a very near relation, in collaboration with a well-known English author, shows the King as he really is, in public and in private life; it shows what his aims are, and how he h a s t r i e d to carry them out; and explains the present difficulties in Spain and the collapse of the monarchy. The authors, in writing this book, have had privileges and sources of information which have been given to no one else, and they h av e ha d p er so na l experience of the revolution. It is, therefore, essentially an authoritative work, as well as being immensely interesting both from the historic and the human points of view." A GENTLEMAN VOLUNTEER: THE LETTERS OF GEORGE HENNELL FROM THE PENINSULAR WAR, 1812-1813., Hennell, George. Edited by Michael Glover.
13 Hennell, George. Edited by Michael Glover. A GENTLEMAN VOLUNTEER: THE LETTERS OF GEORGE HENNELL FROM THE PENINSULAR WAR, 1812-1813.
Heinemann, London, (1979), first edition.
181 pp, large 8vo (9 1/2" H), hard cover in dust jacket. B&w reproductions, maps, battle plans. "George Hennell, born about 1785 the son of a Coventry ribbon manufacturer and tradesman, joined Wellington's army in the Peninsula as a Volunteer, was commissioned in the field in the Forty-third Light Infantry, and served through the campaigns of 1812-13. Of his letters home twenty-six (all but two of them unpublished) survive, and these have been edited by the historian Michael Glover with a ge neral introduction, summaries of the events in the campaign covered by the letters, notes and appendices. The discovery of the letters represents a considerable find. Hennell is particularly good at conveying the detail of everyday life i n t h e f i e ld and camp and from his vivid pen the reader can gain a first-hand impression of what it was like to be a young officer on active service more than a century and a half ago. He is exceptional as a reporter because he not only rec ou nt s e ve nt s a s th ey happen but tries to analyse his own reactions to the dangers and horrors through which he is passing. He sometimes illustrated his letters with diagrams and fluent sketches, several of which are reproduced in this book . Hen ne ll' s s tor y beg in s d ramatically in the thick of the action when as a raw recruit armed only with a letter of introduction to General Picton he joins the British camp just two days before the bloody storming of the citadel of Badajoz. It end s w ith the vict or ious ar my d escending the Pyrenees to invade the soil of France shortly before the fall of Napoleon." London B.T. Batsford 1961 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good -
216 pp, 9" H. B&w plates, drawings, maps. Wraparound jacket art reproduces an aquatint of the death of Sir John Moore by T. Sutherland. "(The first book) to be devoted exclusively to the Battle of Corunna and to the short campaign which preceded it. Mr Hibbert has made extensive use of the many eye-witness accounts which survive in the form of official despatches, histories, diaries, memoirs and letters. With the aid of these, he not only shows a remarkable understanding of Sir John Moore and his fellow-officers, of their conflicting characters and views, but he also provides, through the eyes of officers and men alike, a horrifying picture of the hardships of this brief and bitter campaign. The narra-tive is made the more vivid by the numerous illustrations from contemporary paintings and engravings, and by the five specially prepared maps." This was only the first of many incidents in an adventurous career, in which he figured in almost every kind of treachery and desperate exploit. Stucley lived - and died - furiously.
