A FOLK TALE JOURNEY THROUGH THE MARITIMES., Creighton, Helen. Edited with an introduction by Michael Taft and Ronald Caplan.
3 Creighton, Helen. Edited with an introduction by Michael Taft and Ronald Caplan. A FOLK TALE JOURNEY THROUGH THE MARITIMES.
Wreck Cove, Cape Breton Island Breton Books 1993 1895415284 / 9781895415285 Soft Cover Very Good
249 pp, 9" H. B&w photographs. "These are the folk tales from Dr. Helen Creighton's life journey through the Maritime Provinces, collecting songs and ghost stories and old cures - and folk tales. Helen serves as our guide, introducing us to storytellers, setting the scene of the telling - and then she lets the person tell it as they told it to her. The feel of the kitchen and the fish shed still cling to these stories. Some are long, really miraculous folk tales - miraculous in detail and in that they managed to survive. Others are the brief riddle or the tantalizing quick-telling that a folklorist can expect along the way. Helen kept it all. And read as a whole, the reality and intensity of those smaller pieces reveals their value in among the more finished, well-told tales. (This) is a Maritime treasure." Interior - crease at bottom corner of page leaf 89/90, otherwise clean and tight with no other ownership marks. Exterior - slight bump at top of spine, minor rubbing, minor soft crease at top corner of rear cover.

Toronto University of Toronto Press 1987 0802026303 / 9780802026309 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good+
449 pp, 9 1/4" H. "Northrop Frye was one of the most influential critics of the twentieth century. His output was prodigious: his publications include thirty-eight books and monographs, nearly 300 essays and articles, and some 15 reviews and miscellaneous pieces. His reputation is international: he has been the subject of numerous books, a forthcoming biography, and thirty doctoral dissertations from universities as far-flung as Freiburg, Oxford, and Texas. With this bibliography, the massive body of work by and about Frye is now made readily accessible for the first time. More than 2500 entries are included, organized in a practical and straightforward structure. Part One, covering works by Frye, is arranged in chronological order. Part Two, which deals with secondary sources, is presented in alphabetical order. (The author) has provided ample notation for the many hundreds of entries; with the primary sources, he has quoted from Frye's own words as far as possible to illuminate the tone as well as the content." Minor soiling to top/bottom edges of text block, one small and one tiny corner bump. Dust jacket has very light wrinkling at top/bottom of flap-folds, minor rubbing.

They are unanimous only in their concern that necessary changes be made and that study of the curriculum be continuous and objective." TAPESTRY OF WAR: A PRIVATE VIEW OF CANADIANS IN THE GREAT WAR., Gwyn, Sandra.
6 Gwyn, Sandra. TAPESTRY OF WAR: A PRIVATE VIEW OF CANADIANS IN THE GREAT WAR.
Toronto HarperCollins 1992 000215787X / 9780002157872 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good
552 pp, 9 1/2" H. B&w photographs, reproductions. "For some, like the aging man-about-town Agar Adamson, and the promising politician Talbot Papineau, the war was both the climax and the denouement of their careers. For others, like Harold Innis, just off an Ontario farm, the horror of the trenches changed the direction and purpose of their lives. For Vancouver secretary Grace MacPherson, war was a great adventure; for Ottawa socialite Ethel Chadwick, it was a wave that pushed her aside and left her stranded for life. For Max Aitken, better known as Lord Beaverbrook, it was an opportunity to be exploited. For Newfoundlander Owen Steele, it was an heroic duty that ended in a rain of bullets at Beaumont-Hamel. Sandra Gwyn has woven the intimate threads of these lives into a composite portrait that is overwhelming in its power." Minor wrinkle at top of hinges. Dust jacket has minor edge wrinkling, tiny scuff on front panel.

WHALERS NO MORE: A HISTORY OF WHALING ON THE WEST COAST., Hagelund, W.A.
7 Hagelund, W.A. WHALERS NO MORE: A HISTORY OF WHALING ON THE WEST COAST.
Madeira Park, BC Harbour 1987 0920080022 / 9780920080023 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good
211 pp, 9 1/4" H. B&w photographs, drawings, maps. "Over 30,000 whales were killed in the Pacific Northwest between 1905 and 1972, and the business of capturing and processing them created its own mythology. Here are tales of the monsters that almost got away, of whales that rammed the ships trying to capture them, and of the whalers themselves, who lived always on the edge of danger, risking life and limb in pursuit of the biggest animals in the world. Many of the old whalers were avid collectors of maritime lore, and their stories of whales and of the life in the sea - the sperm whale's ambergris, freaks of enormous size or those with legs, and giant octopus and sea monsters - create a vivid background to William Hagelund's very personal history of whaling on the west coast." Light wrinkling at bottom of spine, small ink mark at top edge of rear board. Dust jacket has very light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, minor rubbing on rear panel.

Toronto Samuel Stevens, Hakkert, 1975 0888665660 / 9780888665669 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good-
116 pp, large 8vo (9 5/8" H). Profusely illustrated with b&w photographs. "Canada provided the third largest allied navy in the Second World War. The Royal Canadian Navy, born amidst controversy over its very existence just before the First World War grew from small beginnings with the acquisition of the cruisers Rainbow and Niobe to radical expansion in the 1940's to fight the battle of the Atlantic. The RCN has always been a wartime service: its first submarines were bought, not by Ottawa, but by British Columbia, in the tumultuous days immediately preceding the outbreak of war in 1914. Its last aircraft carrier, the Bonaventure, left commission despite a costly refit as the tensions of the Cold War receded. (This) is the story of the ships of the RCN giving a brief history of their active service and presenting a visual account of Canada's Navy in dramatic pictures of Canada's own ships." Slight browning in margins of pages, light browning to edges of text block, light waviness to top/bottom edges of text block. 14 Rubio, Mary & Waterston, Elizabeth, editors. (L.M. Montgomery - Lucy Maud Montgomery.) THE SELECTED JOURNALS OF L.M. MONTGOMERY. VOLUME IV: 1929-1935.
Toronto Oxford University Press 1998 0195413814 / 9780195413816 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good
439 pp, 9 1/4" H. B&w photographs, maps. The fourth volume of 'The Selected Journals of L.M. Montgomery' "covers a tumultuous period in the writer's life. By 1929 she was 54 years old and known world-wide as the author of 'Anne of Green Gables' and many other books, yet this was also a time of numerous setbacks: the stock market crash, a drop in royalties from her many books, the need to provide her two sons with a university education while her husband's modest church salary was often in arrears, and the fact that many loans she made to friends and family were not repaid. She faced personal crises in relations with her sons and her husband and there was furious controvery in her husband's parish, Norval Presbyterian Church. She also felt concerns over her own mental state and she became the unwilling object of a young woman's declarations of passionate love. Yet this was not a period without joy: the volume opens with happy travels to Prince Edward Island and western Canada and ends with her looking forward with great excitement to a new life in Toronto. Besides providing an intimate look into the daily life of one of the world's best-loved authors, these journals can also be read as a fascinating social history of the early twentieth century. For example, Montgomery's health concerns provide intriguing insights into the state of medical practices. Readers may shudder slightly when a bout of asthma is treated with strychnine tablets or a 'bad chill' brings out a compound of arsenic." Minor wrinkling at top of spine. Dust jacket has light wrinkling at top of spine.

138 pp, 8 1/2" H. "(S)hows Canada in an unfamiliar light - the light of an energetic and sometimes savage self-criticism. The stately pine (one of those symbolic vegetables that grow like weeds in the Canadian climate) is here blasted and eaten away by the native fires of satire and invective. But though the light is unfamiliar it has burnt steadily since the mid-nineteenth century. Almost as soon as Canadian poets appeared they were sounding a disrespectful note - a loud raspberry which echoes rudely down the corridors of history to our own day." Preface by David L. Thomson. Arranged under the headings: Prologue; True Patriot Love; Solid Citizens; Snow, Dust, Hail and Rust; The Purse-Proud Prelate; Indigenous Throstles; We Stand on Guard; Private Hells.
