WEAPONS FREE. THE STORY OF A GULF WAR HELICOPTER PILOT., Boswell, Richard. Foreword by General Sir Peter de la Billiere.
1 Boswell, Richard. Foreword by General Sir Peter de la Billiere. WEAPONS FREE. THE STORY OF A GULF WAR HELICOPTER PILOT.
Crecy, (Manchester, 1998).
216 pp, large 8vo (9 7/8" H), hard cover in dust jacket. B&w and color photographs. "In September 1990 Richard Boswell was a newly qualified helicopter pilot in the Royal Navy, fresh out of flight school and flying one of the most potent fighting helicopters in the world - the Westland Lynx. The world was at his feet in every sense. Then, on the day he and his girlfriend decided to buy a house together, Saddam Hussein invaded Kuwait. With less than 24 hours notice, Richard Boswell was onboard HMS Manchester and en-route to the Gulf and impending war. Once in the Gulf, HMS Manchester prepared for the seaborne invasion that most thought was inevitalbe. Boswell saw action against Iraqi forces, protecting Allied ships and sinking a number of Iraqi gunboats. After the liberation of Kuwait, he flew extensively around the devastated country, when his duties included a spell as pilot for Sir Peter de la Billiere. But his story does not end there. After returning to the UK , Boswell became an instructor and also indulged his passion for flying home-built aircraft, a passion that led to the accident that nearly killed him and ended his days as a Navy pilot. The portrayal of the battle to rebuilt his shattered life is every bit as graphic as his wartime experiences in the Gulf." Minor wrinkling at top of spine - very light at bottom. Dust jacket has light wrinkling at bottom of spine. VG+/VG+

Only Skyla, the witch-girl, was left alive - at the mercy of her own rampant magic and a clan of vengeful enemies. The Dark Elves had triumphed. Old Eyjarr took the discouraging news calmly. Hadn't he seen defeat before, in other lives, in strand after strand of the Web of Life? But he knew that if he could thwart the curse of the Dark Elves even once, the infernal curse would finally disappear from all the strands, for all time. The trick, Eyjarr assured his astonished pupil, would be to learn from their mistakes - and to search again for the one, improbable strand where a couple of clever wizards could cheat an implacable fate...." 5 Heming, Arthur. THE DRAMA OF THE FORESTS: ROMANCE AND ADVENTURE.
Toronto S.B. Gundy 1924 First Canadian Edition. Hard Cover Good+ No Jacket Arthur Heming.
324 pp, 7 3/4" H. 14 colour plates, including frontispiece (collated). "(I) travelled twenty-three times through various parts of the vast northern woods, between Maine and Alaska, and covered thousands upon thousands of miles by canoe, pack-train, snowshoes, bateau, dog-train, buck-board, timber-raft, prairie-schooner, lumber-wagon, and 'alligator'. (B)ack again I went at all seasons of the year to encamp in that great timber-land that sweeps from the Atlantic to the Pacific. thus it has taken me thirty-three years to gather the information this volume contains - (but) I wish to explain that in compliance with the wishes of the leading actors - who actually lived their parts of this story - fictitious names have been given to the principal characters and to the principal trading posts, lakes, and rivers herein depicted. Furthermore, in order to give the reader a more interesting, complete, and faithful description of the daily and the yearly life of the forest dwellers as I have observed it, I have taken the liberty of weaving together the more interesting facts I have gathered - both first- and second-hand - into one continuous narrative as though it all happened in a single year. And in order to retain all the primitive local colour, the unique costumes, and the fascinating romance of the fur-trade days as I witnessed them in my twenties - though much of the life has already passed away - the scene is set to represent a certain year in the early (1890s)." Separation between some page gatherings (mainly at illustration locations) - pages are firm in binding, very slight bump at top corner of boards, wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, minor shelf soiling on bottom of text block, three very small stains on top of text block, minor rubbing on boards. Book is protected in a stiff mylar sleeve.

"Starting in present-day Holland, Poortvliet observes a nd illustrates, the many animals who inhabit this earth, in great detail. He may catch a rabbit, lynx, or partridge sauntering by, or admire a doe with her young right beneath him. He takes notice of foxes, deer, and wolves, and portrays them r e a l istically and convincingly. (He) continues on his journey to the sixteenth century, a time when humans coexisted with such predators as bears, lynx, and wolves, and other wild animals. His journey ends with the people and animals of the Ic e Ag e, a nd he imagines the now-extinct mammoth and other creatures in their natural habitat - the giant deer, the wooly rhinoceros, the wild horse, the auroch, and the cave lion. Exploring the boundaries of time travel and studying the wild anim al s a t c los e range, (he) documents their daily habits and rituals. STAR TALES., Ridpath, Ian.

Universe Books, New York, 1988, First American edition.
161 pp, large 8vo (9 1/2" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0876636946 B&w illustrations. "Every night a pageant of Greek mythology circles overhead. Perseus flies to the rescue of Andromeda, Orion faces the charge of the snorting Bull and the ship of the Argonauts sails in search of the Golden Fleece. Constellations are the invention of the human imagination, not of nature. They are an expression of the human desire to impress its own order upon the apparent chaos of the night s k y . T wentieth-century science has told us that these twinkling points of light are glowing balls of gas, but the ancient Greeks, to whom we owe many of our constellations, knew nothing of this. Ian Ridpath, well-known astronomy writer and br o ad ca st er , h as been intrigued by the myths of the stars for many years. 'Star Tales' is the first guide this century to combine all the fascinating myths in one books, illustrated with the beautiful and evocative engravings from two of the le adi ng sta r a tl a ses ; Johann Bode's 'Uranographia' of 1801 and John Flamsteed's 'Atlas Coelestis' of 1729. This is an excellent reference and the perfect gift for the armchair astronomer and those interested in classical mythology." Minor w rin klin g a t to p/bo tto m of s pine. THE GREAT FUR LAND OR SKETCHES FROM LIFE IN THE HUDSON'S BAY TERRITORY., Robinson, H.M.
13 Robinson, H.M. THE GREAT FUR LAND OR SKETCHES FROM LIFE IN THE HUDSON'S BAY TERRITORY.
Toronto Coles 1975 Facsimile Edition. Hard Cover Fine Very Good- Charles Gasche.
348 pp, 8 5/8" H. Burgundy cloth with black title block, gilt lettering/banding on spine, gilt lettering/banding on front board - one of the Coles Canadian Collection. B&w illustrations. A facsimile of the edition published by G.P. Putnam's Sons, New York, 1879. "In approximately 1870, one H.M. Robinson, writer and traveller, journeyed by dog sled to the Hudson's Bay Territory. The account of his months there is fascinating not only for its first-hand look at life in northern Canada, but also for this cultured man's view of it. The book includes excursions by dog sled and canoe, as well as hunting expeditions. It documents life in a Hudson's Bay Company fort, in a fur-hunters' camp, and in an Indian settlement. There are absorbing accounts of voyageurs, the Blackfeet Indians, 'nomadic' hunters, and medicine men, as well as breath-taking descriptions of the landscape. Since little knowledge of the North was generally available, Mr. Robinson's commentary helped to shape the attitudes of early Canadians, thus eventually influencing government policy. Through this book, modern readers can achieve a more complete idea of what it was like to be alive in the North in the 1870's. But more than that, we are able to trace the roots of the nation's successes and failures in dealing with people and the natural resources of the vast expanse once known as the Hudson's Bay Territory." Dust jacket has light wdge wear/wrinkling, two taped (inside) edge tears - one with creases, minor rubbing and soiling.
