NICHOLAS HILLIARD., Auerbach, Erna.
2 Auerbach, Erna. NICHOLAS HILLIARD.
Boston Boston Book & Art Shop 1964 Hard Cover Very Good Good+ Nicholas Hilliard.
352 pp, small 4to (10" H). Over 200 reproductions of Hilliard's work, mainly in b&w. "This is the first full-length monograph to be written on the life and work of Nicholas Hilliard who lived from 1547 to 1619. The first English-born painter to gain the status of an artist recognised by the English court, he was painter, limner, engraver and goldsmith to Queen Elizabeth I and later to James I, and is kown to have also painted portraits in oil, but it is difficult to attribute particular oil portraits to his hand. Hilliard's importance is not limited by his performance as a miniaturist, for the style of his miniatures had a major influence on the general trend of English painting, and dominated the manner of contemporary English portraiture, both life-size and miniature. (He) was equally eminent as a goldsmith and he practised this craft throughout his life. Much new biographical material has been found which establishes Hilliard as a great Elizabethan." Small bump to top corners of boards, minor browning to page edges. Dust jacket is moderately browned - mainly on inside surface, is price clipped, has light to moderate edge wear/wrinkling - mainly to top/bottom of spine and flap-folds.

86 pp, 10 1/4" H. Colour photographs. "Lucy Maud Montgomery, the world-famous author of 'Anne of Green Gables', had a deep and passionate affection for the pastoral serenity and tranquil beauty of her native Island. (This) is a pictorial study of the Prince Edward Island that Lucy Maud knew and loved. Passages from her autobiography and from her voluminous personal correspondence supply the text prepared by Francis W.P. Bolger, and the photographs have been taken specially to illustrate the landscape she described. Word and picture together portray the Island that was always Lucy Maud Montgomery's inspiration and strength." Light wear at top/bottom of spine and at corners. JOHN BUCHAN: A MEMOIR., Buchan, William. (John Buchan).
4 Buchan, William. (John Buchan). JOHN BUCHAN: A MEMOIR.
Griffin House, Toronto, 1982.
272 pp, large 8vo (9 1/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 887601081 B&w photographs. "John Buchan was a man of remarkably diverse achievements: writer, lawyer, politician, soldier, scholar and, finally, Governor-General of Canada. He was the friend of Roosevelt and of George V, of Henry James and T.E. Lawrence; indeed, there was scarcely a prominent figure of the twenties and thirties whom he did not know. His contemporaries are among the most successful men of their day; his n o v e l s , still widely read, dominated the market between the wars; his histories and biographies are much admired; his achievements in public office demonstrate a gift for government and a visionary wisdom. Yet through all his work there runs a t hr ea d sp un of the simple beliefs by which he stood - courage, truth, loyalty, honour, compassion. Such a creed made him kindly, gentle and much loved; his untimely death provoked an enviable outburst of sorrow and sense of loss. To his p ubl ic, ho wev er , a nd to succeeding generations, he is an enigma, often mistakenly accused of attitudes he never held. This book, by his son, shows John Buchan as he appeared to his family and close friends, an appealing and intimate portrait o f a man whos e fa me rest s - perhaps wrongly - on his skill as a novelist. Drawn from the author's own memories, and from privileged and unpublished sources, this is an elegant study of the private face behind the public mask, in the light of an extr aord inary care er. " Ti ny s oiling speck on top edge of rear board. Dust jacket has minor edge wrinking, a few tiny specks of soiling on inside, very slight fading to spine color. Very Good+/Very Good+

THE FRAGRANCE OF SWEET-GRASS: L.M. MONTGOMERY'S HEROINES AND THE PURSUIT OF ROMANCE., Epperly, Elizabeth Rollins. (Lucy Maud Montgomery. L.M.)
6 Epperly, Elizabeth Rollins. (Lucy Maud Montgomery. L.M.) THE FRAGRANCE OF SWEET-GRASS: L.M. MONTGOMERY'S HEROINES AND THE PURSUIT OF ROMANCE.
Toronto University of Toronto Press 1993 0802074618 / 9780802074614 First Paperback Edition. Soft Cover Very Good+
275 pp, 8vo (9" H). "Anne Shirley is the best known of a memorable group of heroines created by Lucy Maud Montgomery, a group that includes Emily Byrd Starr, Valancy Stirling, and Pat Gardiner. These characters are at the centre of Epperly's book, the first full-length critical study of all L.M. Montgomery's fiction. Epperly contends that Montgomery was a master of the romance genre, and through her use of literary allusions, repetitions, irony, and comic inversions she deftly manipulated the normal conventions of romance novels. By studying the fictional biographies of the heroines and their pursuit of romance, Epperly question the ways romance shapes what we consider valuable in our imaginings and experience. A book written for L.M. Montgomery fans and scholars." Interior - clean and tight with no previous ownership marks. Exterior - very minor edge wear, clean and bright.

"This major effort of a large group of scholars working in the field of Canadian literature provides a comprehensive, up-to-date reference work on the English literary history of Canada. It will be invaluable as a source of information on authors, genres, and literary trends and influences. It is also a fascinating account, lively and well written, of the ways in which writers have over the centuries striven to record reactions to a powerful natural environment and to their society against the background of other literary traditions in English. This volume represents a positive attempt to give a history of Canada in terms of writings which deserve attention because of significant thought, form, and use of language; it also aims to contribute to criticism by offering reasons for singling out those works regarded as the best."
