1 Berton, Pierre. THE INVASION OF CANADA, 1812-1813.
Toronto McClelland & Stewart 1980 0771012357 / 9780771012358 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Good+ Inscribed By Author
363 pp, 9 3/4" H. Pictorial endpapers, maps/battle plans. Inscribed on title page: "Pierre Berton / To Leon with my best wishes / Aug '85". "To America's leaders in 1812, an invasion of Canada seemed the best way to bloody John Bull's nose. It would, as Thomas Jefferson confidently predicted, be 'a mere matter of marching'. How could a nation of eight million fail to subdue a struggling colony of 300,000? Yet, when the campaign of 1812 ended on the bloody banks of the River Raisin, the only Americans left on Canadian soil were prisoners of war. Three American armies had been forced to surrender, and the British were in control of all of Michigan Territory and much of Indiana and Ohio. Drawing on personal memoirs and diaries as well as official dispatches, the author has been able to get inside the characters of the men who fought the war - the common soldier as well as the generals. (C)owards and heroes, flawed generals and bumbling bureaucrats, traitors, loyalists, war profiteers, military incompetents and geniuses. (T)he War of 1812, or more properly the myth of the war, served to give the new settlers (of Upper Canada) a sense of community and set them on a different course from that of their neighbours. The Canadian way of life, says Berton, has its roots in the invasion of Canada." Light toning to fore-edge of text block. Dust jacket has very light edge wrinkling; two tiny edge tears archivally taped; light browning on spine, flap-folds, top 1" of panels and top edge of flaps; several tiny dents on front hinge.

2 Bowyer, Chaz. BOMBER BARONS.
Barnsley, South Yorkshire Leo Cooper 2001 085052802X / 9780850528022 Reprint Hard Cover Very Good Very Good+
222 pp, large 8vo (9 7/16" H). B&w photographs. "By the end of the Second World War, a grim total of 55,000 air crew of Bomber Command has lost their lives. This figure comprised no less than seventy per cent of RAF fatalities. Yet, unlike their more glamorous fighter pilot colleagues, very few bomber pilots or crewmen were familiar household names to the general public. However, within the ranks of the RAF itself, some individuals stood out gaining high reputations for their courage and leadership, a respect achieved regardless of the decorations they had won or the number of sorties flown. These were the 'Bomber Barons'. In this authoritative book, (the author) chooses a selection of these men. Some like Leonard Cheshire, Guy Gibson and Hughie Edwards, are today well known but others such as Nick Knilans, Syd Clayton and Jo Lancaster, are familiar only to those 'in the know'. For each, the author details their careers and relates episodes that reflect the qualities that made them outstanding. At the same time, the reader learns of the unfolding dramatic development of Bomber Command from the comparatively uncoordinated, non-cohesive raids of the early part of the war to the highly-trained and deadly offensive weapon it became under Sir Arthur Harris, from 1942 AOC-in-C of Bomber Command, and the Greatest Baron of them all." Small very light stain in margin of page 16. Dust jacket has very minor edge wrinkling, a few very tiny dints, very minor rubbing.

FATAL DECISION: ANZIO AND THE BATTLE FOR ROME., D'Este, Carlo.
4 D'Este, Carlo. FATAL DECISION: ANZIO AND THE BATTLE FOR ROME.
HarperCollins, New York, 1991, book club edition.
566 pp, 8vo (8 1/2" H), hard cover in dust jacket. Map endpapers, b&w photographs, maps/battle plans. "By taking advantage of Allied command of the sea and air to effect complete surprise, infantry and armored forces landing at Anzio on January 22 were expected to secure a beachhead and then push inland to cut the two main highways and railroads supplying the German armies to the south, either trapping and annihilating them or forcing them to withdraw north and opening the way to R o m e . S u c h was the plan. What really happened, brilliantly told by Carlo D'Este, was a near disaster for the Allies and the unfortunate soldiers involved. Doomed by uncertain leadership at the highest levels, including Churchill's pressure an d me dd l in g, G en eral Sir Harold Alexander's lack of firm directives, and General Mark Clark's unwillingness to risk defeat or push a tired General John Lucas, the Anzio beachhead became a death trap, with Allied troops forced to fight for the ir li ves f o r f ive dr ead ful months in a throwback to the trench warfare of World War I. Even the enventual Allied victory, when the Germans finally gave way in May 1944, was tarnished by Clark's ambition to be first in Rome instead of a ttem pti ng t o cu t o ff and des troy or capture fleeing German troops...." 300 pp, large 8vo. B&w photos, maps. "Renato Beluche played many roles in the turbulent world of the nineteenth-century Caribbean. He was a merchant sea captain as well as a successful privateer. He was Simon Bolivar's favorite admiral as well as an active partner in the affairs of the Laffite brothers. He fought both as a revolutionary and as a defender against revolt. He was a patriot in the eyes of eight American nations and a brigand in the eyes of England and France. In tracing the course of Beluche's chameleonlike career, this biography...gives us a panoramic view of the complex affairs of the Caribbean during one of the most volatile periods in its history..." 6 Douglas-Hamilton, James. Introduction by Laddie Lucas. THE AIR BATTLE FOR MALTA: THE DIARIES OF A FIGHTER PILOT.
Wrens Park, n.p., 2000, reprint.
150 pp, large 8vo (9 11/16" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0905778456 Profusely illustrated with b&w photographs. "For both the Axis and Allied Powers, Malta was a vital key to victory - not only in the Mediterranean, but in North Africa and the Middle East as well. In this new edition of his highly-praised book....(the author) provides one of the most intriguing and realistic accounts of the struggle for possession of the island, a fight to the death which lasted two-and-a-ha l f y e a r s , during which time 14,000 tons of bombs were dropped on a defiant population. The book is largely based on the diaries of Lord David Douglas-Hamiton, the author's uncle, who was sent out to Malta as a Spitfire Squadron Leader at a ti me wh en t he i sl and was sustaining heavier bombing than London at the height of the Blitz, and the Axis forces were preparing for invasion. The author's scrupulous research, combined with his uncle's uniquely authoritative viewpoint, vivid ly rec r eat es the pe rio d, the comradeship and the grimness of life on the beleaguered island. The air battle, which was the second largest of the entire war, involved some of the most famous fighter aces of World War II, including 'Screwball' Beu rlin g and Lad die Luca s. The y all played a vital part in what proved to be one of the greatest defensive and strategic operations of all time, and their exploits, along with those of many others, are recorded here, a reminder of their indomit able spir it in the face of a ppa llin g odds." 179 pp, large 8vo (9 7/16" H). B&w photographs, Spitfire profiles. "Robert 'Buck' McNair came from Nova Scotia, the second of three sons born of a mix of Scottish and German parents. As a young man he became interested in flight, and was lucky enough to be able to fly floatplanes off the Canadian lakes. When war came, he went through flight training in Canada, sailed to England, and in the summer of 1941 found himself in the newly formed 411 Squadron RCAF. Eventually this unit began flying sweeps over Northern France and he saw his first combat actions during that autumn. An aggressive fighter pilot, he was chosen by his Canadian CO to accompany him to the besieged island of Malta in the spring of 1942, to coincide with the arrival on that island of the first Spitfires." McNair went on to win three DFCs and a DSO among other awards and although he was twice wounded, his score of victories reached 16, "with others probably destroyed and damaged. This is a remarkable story of courage and heroism by one of the Second World War's top-scoring fighter pilots who inspired his men and fellow pilots in actions above the skies of France and Malta, and who, despite being almost blind in one eye, continued to lead and spur his men onto greater actions." Born and brought up in London's East End, the future War Correspondent and Radio Critic started his career on a local paper and worked his way up. Since those early days he has visited more than thirty countries and met many famous men and women. His assignments have given him an 'inside slant' on some of the biggest stories of recent times, and in several instances he is now able to disclose information which was hitherto suppressed by the censor. (He) witnessed the much criticised campaign in Southern France, the sensational capture of Leros, the Airborne drop across the Rhine and the liberation of Rome, Athens and Amster-dam. Since the war he has toured America from coast to coast and has much to say of recent radio and television developments. There are personal anecdotes of President Truman, the Pope, Bernard Shaw, H.G. Wells, George Lansbury, of famous soldiers like Montgomery and Alexander, and many others." 15 Karamanski, Theodore J. FUR TRADE AND EXPLORATION: OPENING THE FAR NORTHWEST, 1821-1852.
Vancouver University of British Columbia Press 1983 0774801441 / 9780774801447 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good+
330 pp, 8 3/4" H. B&w photographs, reproductions, maps. "For profit more than fame the (fur) traders risked dangerous rapids in summer, starvation in winter, and hostile Indian tribes year round to discover new river routes 'westward of the mountains'. In pursuit of the Northwest Passage or a Great River to the West, successive expeditions were dispatched to the Far North by Sir George Simpson, the viceroylike governor of the Hudson's Bay Company. Exploration was profitable and necessary because more furs could be traded for fewer goods in the virgin lands where the white man had never been. The extraordinary achievements of the trader-adventurers - such men as Samuel Black, John Bell, and Robert Campbell - have been overlooked by previous historians because their way was so difficult and their successes so meager. Isolated at the end of 3,000 miles of canoe trails, in fierce competition with Russian and Indian traders, they always worked against the odds while at every turn the Bay Company withheld its support in order to conserve profits. This lively account of the unsung heroes of the Hudson's Bay Company provides new information about the traders who tested the mapmakers' misconceptions of the Far Northwest." Very light wrinkling at top of spine. Dust jacket has minor edge wrinkling at bottom of front panel and front flap.

"The bulk of the world's cruising fleet emanates from non-coral areas and carries out most of its crui sing within coral waters.
