CHINA REVISITED, AFTER FORTY-TWO YEARS., Chiang Yee. (The Silent Traveller.)
2 Chiang Yee. (The Silent Traveller.) CHINA REVISITED, AFTER FORTY-TWO YEARS.
New York W.W. Norton 1977 03930879143 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good- Chiang Yee.
180 pp, 9 1/2" H. Illustrated throughout with the author's b&w drawings & calligraphy. "In 1933, Chiang Yee, then the governor of a district in China, was forced to leave his homeland after an argument with a warlord. The China he left was an unhealthy country: a weak central government unable to control the power of the warlords; a deteriorating economic condition; a reputation for corruption based on an ill-defined and unsatisfactory land-tax system; widespread illiteracy and famine. In 1975, after an absence of forty-two years, he returned to China. In this book he tells of his travels and records his impressions of the new China as compared to the China he left. In addition, his two grown daughters, who, along with their mother, remained in China, provide another perspective on China's progress. As Mr. Chiang travels through China, he tells of his visits to both well-known and less familiar landmarks; he describes the communes and factories of light industry which have been built in the last twenty-five years. He attends the May First celebration - the important festival of labor. But, above all, he contrasts the backwards country he left with the brand-new independent nation that has been emerging over the last twenty-five years. He points with pride to the accomplishments: 800 million Chinese living and working together in a united spirit; the feeling of peace and prosperity; no unemployment; sufficient food for all; great technical, scientific, and educational advances; increased literacy; universal medicare; and vast improvements in the status of women." Dust jacket is price clipped, has light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, some light waviness on front panel, very light browning - mainly at edges, small light stain at top edge of spine, two line indentations across spine, protected in a mylar sleeve.

University of Chicago Press, Chicago, 1985, first edition.
343 pp, large 8vo (9 1/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0226135799 "Combining literary criticsm with psychology, sociology, and the history of ideas, (this book) offers a fresh approach to the often-asserted connection between Puritanism and the rise of the English novel. Its premise is that the Christian myth, far from serving as a simple, unified background to fiction, was paradoxical and full of potential conflicts, and that these were particularly vivid in the Puritan ima g i n a t i o n . The extraordinary power of Puritan psychology rests in the control it granted Providence over the individual. Yet as a basis for fiction, Puritanism confronted a paradox that is the central theme of Damrosch's study - the tensio n be tw ee n fi ct io ns that confess themselves to be fictional and the Puritan faith in human life as a narrative invented by God....Damrosch holds that the eighteenth-century novel was preeminently a novel of ideas, not simply illustrating or al lu din g t o i de as but te sti ng them and fighting with them. As such, individual masterpieces found unique solutions to shared cultural problems. They demand to be understood from within, even while an attempt is made to trace their historical de velo pmen t. Acc ord ingl y, D amro sch examines a series of major works in detail. After surveying Puritan ideas about the self, time, and language, he considers two very different modes of Puritan narrative: Milton's 'Paradise Lost' and Bunya n's autob iogra phy and all egori es. Damro sch then explores the transition to secular narrative in eloquent discussions of Defoe's 'Robinson Crusoe', Richardson's 'Clarissa', and Fielding's 'Tom Jones'. A glance at Sterne's 'Tristram Shandy' co nclu des th e book , wi th re flect ions o n th e futu re of the novel in an age when providential pattern could no longer be asserted as synonymous with literary design." 1" faint line indentation on fore-edge of textblock. 266 pp, small 4to (10 1/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 1550133551 Illustrated in colour and b&w with photographs, reproductions, maps/battle plans. "Canada's military history consists of more than participation in the two world wars. Fro m the Riel Rebellions and the Boer War, to the Korean War, the United Nations peacekeeping missions and the recent Gulf War, Canadians have fought and died on our own frontiers and on distant continents. (This book), a richly documented his t o r y o f Canada's other wars, portrays the gradual evolution of our fighting forces. The raw militia of a young country and the patriotic recruits who marched to Pretoria would, after the crucible of two great wars, develop into seasoned troop s wh o co u ld h o ld the line in the bitter trench battles of the Korean War or maintain the peace in political hotspots such as Cyprus and the Congo. When, at the end of the Second World War, the United Nations established an international army t o kee p the p eac e, Ca nada began to assume a major role as peacekeeper to the world. Today, Canadian men and women continue to serve wherever peace is threatened, in crises requiring not only military expertise but patience and diplomacy. Lavis hl y il lu stra ted wit h p hot ographs, engravings, and paintings drawn from many collections, 'War and Peacekeeping' tells the often neglected story of the 'little' wars which have contributed much to our military tradition." Yet his call is so urgent that Mary sets off alone across the ocean to find him, braving the sea-voyage to Quebec, and makin g h e r w a y up the St. Lawrence until she finally comes to Hawthorn Bay on Lake Ontario - only to discover that Duncan is dead, and that her aunt and uncle have moved on. 226 pp, large 8vo (9" H), soft cover. ISBN 0968986307 "Jainism is an ancient Indian religion, one with historical wisdom surprisingly relevant for the 21st century. This book is intended for two audiences: for those who want to understand the bas ic ideas and story of Jainism and also for those who seek ethical principles that may help society meet current challenges. The book begins with Professor Parikh's own search for meaning, starting from a career as a scientist where religion a n d r e l ated philosophy were seen as somewhat secondary pursuits. The struggle to understand the many problems of the 20th century led the author to rediscover for himself key Jain teachings. He found that the logic of the Jain worldview, and i ts d o ct ri ne s....would resonate well with the rational mindset of the modern generations, and would, thereby assist them in their struggle to resolve many issues currently facing our planet. The book explains key Jain principles and practic es in a s im ple lu cid language and reconciles these with current topics that might be understood as 'new spirituality' - the widespread attempts to reassert human rights, recognize the interdependence of humans and the environment, and achieve b oth pe rson al fulf illm ent and social justice." ( Philip) calls on testimony from prostitutes, clients and reformers from the last three centuries, in Britain, America and continental Europe, to build a revealing account of this complex and many-sided phenomenon. The emphasis is on the hu m a n s t o r y behind the bare commercial transaction. The author's non-judgemental stance allows us to see prostitutes as they see themselves: as working girls. The text is amplified and illuminated by over sixty illustrations, many in colour, i nc lu d in g wo rk s by artists such as Toulouse-Lautrec, Degas, Picasso, Grosz and Kitaj, and master photographers such as Brassai and E.J. 13 Soong, Stephen C., editor. SONG WITHOUT MUSIC: CHINESE TZ'U POETRY.
Renditions / Chinese University Press, Hong Kong, (1980).
282 pp, small 4to (10 5/8" H), hard cover in dust jacket. Chinese calligraphy, music examples, 2 color plates. "Tz'u originally was written to music to be sung; the word itself means 'song words' in Chinese. While the literary aspect of tz'u is derived from the five and seven-syllable lines of regulated verse or shih, its musical element can be traced back to the triumph, in the early T'ang dynasty, of popular foreign songs over native ones. Tz'u, in fact, is an overflow of shih. When T'ang poetry could no longer express adequately man's more refined and delicate feelings, and when the simple quatrains could not longer contain the spirit of song, it was natural for a new genre to emerge...The approach of the present volume of essays and translations of tz'u is an intimate rather than a pedantic one, for its purpose is to take the poetry-loving reader, as it were, by the hand, and welcome him into a new world. It is an attempt to present a comprehensive view of tz'u poetry, its intrinsic qualities as well as the achievements of individual writers. Through the nine interpretive essays and the eight translations of individual tz'u poets in the present anthology, the reader will gain a deeper in sight in to tz'u poetry and see its continuity in the history of Chinese literature." Wrens Park, n.p., 1999, reprint.
156 pp, 8vo (8 5/8" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0905778413 B&w photographs. "Douglas Bader, the indomitable legless air ace, became a legend in his own lifetime, and is today remembered as one of the greatest combatants to emerge during W orld War II. But less is known about the Bader Wing and its crucial contribution to the Battle of Britain. For the first time, this book reveals the fascinating story of the charismatic Wing Commander and the five squadrons which he led: th e B a d e r Wing, consisting of some sixty pilots in all. The book highlights the dramatic aerial action of the Canadian aces in Baders's own 242 Squadron - Stan Turner, Willis McKnight and G E Ball. It describes in absorbing detail their many s uc c es se s, a nd also the inevitable moments of disaster and death. Moreover, the story is set against the broader canvas and controversy of the Big Wing. The tactics and strategy favouring the Wing are forcibly argued by the author, who comes do wn he avi ly on the side of Douglas Bader, the man whose outspoken views and forceful personality made the Wing possible. In 'The Bader Wing', some of the greatest names of World War II testify to Bader's leadership qualities, including Johnn ie J ohn son, Lad die Lu cas, Sholto Douglas, Hugh Dundas and Alan Deere. Their opinions lend great weight to a book which blends the best of aviation action with a cool reappraisal of the Battle of Britain."
