168 pp, small 4to (10 1/4" H). B&w and colour photographs and reproductions. "This collection is based on the life's work of David Ashe, who while employed as a draftsperson with the Town of Oakville compiled a listing of legal survey plans and registry information on the streets of Oakville. Being a researcher at heart, he went further and spent countless hours of his spare time gathering the history behind Oakville's streets. Joyce Burnell has picked a selection of Ashe's street histories and has added several Oakville landmarks - some of which are not longer here. Add to this, interesting archival images - some never before seen - combined with newer colour photographs and you have an intriguing reflection of Oakville's unique history. With close to 100 street name histories and over 40 landmarks featured, these interesting vignettes make for an easy, enjoyable read. This book links Oakville's street names to local, regional, national and international people, places and things. With such a diverse selection and varied inspirations, you may be surprised!" For Ordinary Signalman Ludd - inevitably dubbed 'Lobby' - it is his first trip and li k e l y t o be a tough one. The convoy must run the gauntlet of U-boats, aircraft - there is even the threat that enemy battleships will put to sea; finally there is the other enemy - the bitterest weather, the cruelest seas in the world...Seen f ro m th e p er sp ectives of both wardroom and lower deck, (although a work of fiction, this book) gives an entirely authentic account of the experience of sailors on Arctic convoys during World War II. From the final shore leave in Liverpool to th e a rr iva l at an in hospitable Russian port, through tragedy and much suffering, the men in the cramped messdecks maintain their unflagging humour to the end. Old sailors will relive every minute of these days, and in the characters recognise t hems elv es 3 5 yea rs a go; others will be gripped by a compelling story." 8 Boissery, Beverley. A DEEP SENSE OF WRONG: THE TREASON, TRIALS, AND TRANSPORTATION TO NEW SOUTH WALES OF LOWER CANADIAN REBELS AFTER THE 1838 REBELLION.
Dundurn, Toronto, 1995.
367 pp, large 8vo (9 1/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 1550022423 B&w maps, illustrations. "In 1839 fifty-eight men left Montreal for the penal colony of New South Wales. They were unimportant men outside their own parishes, ordinary people who had been caught up in the political whirlwind of the 1838 rebellion. Even though they were all civilians, they had been tried by court martial. Convicted of treason, their properties forfeited to the crown, they paid a heavy price for rebellion. And as convicts in Australia, they were considered the lowest of a bad lot. During their years there, however, they earned the respect of Sydney's citizens. (This) is an intimate, grass-roots history, based largely on surviving legal records and on the writings of some of the individuals who lived the story. We follow the men from the confusion of battle, to the court martial, and then to lonely exile in a land half a world away. Their anguish and dignity will resonate today." 17 Colville, Robert. LONDON: THE NORTHERN REACHES. THE COUNTY BOOK SERIES.
Robert Hale, London, 1951, first edition.
268 pp, 8vo (8 9/16" H), hard cover in dust jacket. B&w plates, fold-out map at rear. "The area which is the subject of this book is one of great variety and contrast. From Highgate Woods and Hampstead Heath the land slopes away to busy and conge sted Camden Town; in Somers Town vast building schemes are carried out beside quiet old squares; historic houses stand near to new and prosperous residential quarters. There is an astonishing variety of institutions, from the Zoo and Holl o w a y a n d P entonville prisons to University colleges and other places of learning and research, from the Caledonian Market to the ancient foundation of Queen Matilda. Over the whole scene hangs the atmosphere both of accomplished and pending c ha ng e. T he g r ea t railway companies, four of whose termini profoundly affect the life of parts of the area, are nationalised; the well-run private house, once the hall mark of the Northern Heights, is giving way to blocks of flats. Mr Co lvi lle de scr i bes th is ch ang ing scene and its implications in an objective and impartial manner. Although the time is the present, the past is used to explain developments and tendancies, and a clear picture of an area in transition appears ." JACK'S WAR: LOWER-DECK RECOLLECTIONS FROM WORLD WAR II., Connell, G.G.
18 Connell, G.G. JACK'S WAR: LOWER-DECK RECOLLECTIONS FROM WORLD WAR II.
Crecy 1995 0947554556 / 9780947554552 Revised Edition Hard Cover Near Fine Very Good
236 pp, large 8vo (9 1/2" H). B&w photographs. "Ordinary seamen far outnumber their officers, yet most naval books are written from the officers' standpoint. In a wide variety of reminiscences the author reconstructs the matelot's life, whether in corvette, battleship or destroyer, or whether as Royal Navy, Reservist, RNVR or Hostilities Only; he writes both of the pleasures of shipboard life and of the often harsh discipline meted out for lapses from the strict naval code. There were happy ships and unhappy ships, lucky ships and unlucky ships, and he instances experiences from them. Throughout the book he links the experiences of the seamen to the great actions of the war taking place around them, which are thus seen not from the viewpoint of the captain or admiral but the men who fired the guns, the engineers, etc. Thus we get new perspectives on the Battle of the River Plate, Convoy PQ17, the invasion of Sicily, the Battle of Sirte, and many other actions." Includes a Glossary of Lower-deck words and phrases and Appendix: Extracts from King's Rules and Admiralty Regulations 1939 and 1943. JACK'S WAR: LOWER-DECK RECOLLECTIONS FROM WORLD WAR II., Connell, G.G.
19 Connell, G.G. JACK'S WAR: LOWER-DECK RECOLLECTIONS FROM WORLD WAR II.
Crecy 1995 0947554556 / 9780947554552 Revised Edition Hard Cover Fine Very Good+
236 pp, large 8vo (9 1/2" H). Book is Fine. Dust jacket has minor rubbing, very minor wear or wrinkling at top/bottom of front flap-fold, tiny scuff from sticker removal on front panel title.

A FOLK TALE JOURNEY THROUGH THE MARITIMES., Creighton, Helen. Edited with an introduction by Michael Taft and Ronald Caplan.
20 Creighton, Helen. Edited with an introduction by Michael Taft and Ronald Caplan. A FOLK TALE JOURNEY THROUGH THE MARITIMES.
Wreck Cove, Cape Breton Island Breton Books 1993 1895415284 / 9781895415285 Soft Cover Very Good
249 pp, 9" H. B&w photographs. "These are the folk tales from Dr. Helen Creighton's life journey through the Maritime Provinces, collecting songs and ghost stories and old cures - and folk tales. Helen serves as our guide, introducing us to storytellers, setting the scene of the telling - and then she lets the person tell it as they told it to her. The feel of the kitchen and the fish shed still cling to these stories. Some are long, really miraculous folk tales - miraculous in detail and in that they managed to survive. Others are the brief riddle or the tantalizing quick-telling that a folklorist can expect along the way. Helen kept it all. And read as a whole, the reality and intensity of those smaller pieces reveals their value in among the more finished, well-told tales. (This) is a Maritime treasure." Interior - crease at bottom corner of page leaf 89/90, otherwise clean and tight with no other ownership marks. Exterior - slight bump at top of spine, minor rubbing, minor soft crease at top corner of rear cover.
