" 'If there is no objection, I will take my Division tomorrow and go to Gettysburg.' With these words Major- General Henry Heth set in train the course of events culminating in the titanic clash around the small Pennsylvania town of Gettysburg. On 1 July two Confederate Corps swept towards this strategic crossroads as Federal troops fought a desper a t e d e l aying action. The men of the Army of Northern Virginia were the best in the Confederacy. Under Robert E. Lee they had whipped every Federal force sent against them, and they were confident this time would be no exception. As the firs t at ta c ks s we pt forward full of confidence they were met by a storm of fire. Judging from the determination of their bluecoated adversaries this was going to be no ordinary fight." HOPE IS THE THING WITH FEATHERS: A PERSONAL CHRONICLE OF VANISHED BIRDS., Cokinos, Christopher.
6 Cokinos, Christopher. HOPE IS THE THING WITH FEATHERS: A PERSONAL CHRONICLE OF VANISHED BIRDS.
New York Jeremy P. Tarcher / Putnam 2000 1585420069 / 9781585420063 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good+
359 pp, 9 1/4" H. B&w photographs, reproductions. "There was a time when massive flocks of Passenger Pigeons blotted out the sun, and bright green Carolina Parakeets were so numerous that they looked, according to an early American pioneer, 'like an atmosphere of gems.' But these birds - as well as the Labrador Duck, the Ivory-billed Woodpecker, the Heath Hen, and the Great Auk - now live only as tantalizing but hazy legends. Driven by a desire to understand how and why this came to be, (the author) embarked on ten years of extraordinary detective work. Traveling from Bird Rock in the Gulf of St. Lawrence to Louisiana's tangled bayous in search of those who stalked these birds and those who tried to save them, he discovered strange stories and glorious quests, tales of scientific heroism and political stupidity, of inconceivable apathy and equally astonishing personal devotion. A compelling blend of science, history, politics, and memoir, (this) is a richly detailed and ultimately uplifting narrative of dedication, discovery, and wonder." Light wrinkling at bottom of spine. Dust jacket has minor wrinkle at top of rear panel.

New York SMITHMARK 1996 0765197332 / 9780765197337 Hard Cover Very Good Near Fine Enrico Arno.
618 pp, large 8vo (9 1/4" H). B&w decorations by Enrico Arno, b&w photographs, musical notations. "(A) notable milestone in the collection and presentation of oral literature and traditions from black communities in the Western Hemisphere. It demonstrates the powerful cultural influence of Africa on this side of the Atlantic. (I)ncludes a wide array of orally transmitted traditions of the numerous, sometimes disparate, African-American cultures of the New World. Among these traditions are tales of scoundrels, heroes, rollicking adventures, friendship, and much more: songs, myths, myth-legends, epic-like narrations, and recollections of historical happenings. There are descriptions of cult life, around which many traditions and beliefs flow; of music and dance, which have an integral connection with traditional ways; and of the social scene in places where Africans and Europeans, or white and black ideas intermingled and became Afro-American. (This book) perceives the interconnections of cultural inheritances throughout the Afro-American region and the local divergences as well. Early sections of the book survey the traditions and oral literature of Spanish, French, and English-speaking islands of the Caribbean, and of areas of Central and South America inhabited by people of African descent. There follows an extensive section devoted to the tales, beliefs, recollections, songs, religious epics, and a wide variety of oral creations of blacks in the United States. The Appendixes include a number of African stories and descriptions that point up the impact of African traditions on the cultures of Afro-America. Very light browning to edges of text block, light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, Dust jacket has very minor edge wrinkling.

15 Prucha, Francis Paul. THE SWORD OF THE REPUBLIC: THE UNITED STATES ARMY ON THE FRONTIER, 1783-1846.
Macmillan, (Toronto, 1969).
442 pp, large 8vo (9 9/16" H), hard cover in dust jacket. Map endpapers, b&w maps, plates. "....the story of federal troops called up to enforce paper possession with physical occupation when treaty and purchase opened up the region from the Appalachians west to the Mississippi and the vast new frontiers in the Louisiana Territory. The duties of these soldiers were to protect the settlers and to establish a military presence that maintained American rights with honor in the face of Indian intransigence and British and Spanish scheming. These soldiers, in accomplishing their mission, became farmers, roadbuilders, scientists, and lumbermen: pioneers of the new West. At Fallen Timbers, Tippecanoe, and the Thames, the federal military forces met the early challenge from the Indian nations and their British allies. Military control of strategic points on the Great Lakes and western rivers enforced American control of the fur trade. Army endeavors shored up crumbling territorial edges where Spanish and British officials or traders weakened American power. (This book) recounts vividly the Blackhawk War and the Florida War. It details the construction of western forts and tells the tragic story of the removal of Indians from the East. It is a chronicle of the transition from wilderness to hard-core settlement." Two imprints of previous owners stamp on free front endpaper, light browning to fore-edge of textblock, light wrink ling at top/bottom of spine, light waviness in cloth at top edge of rear board. Dust jacket is price clipped, has very light edge wear, light to moderate edge wrinkling, small tear with creases at top of rear panel, tiny tear at top of spine, small closed puncture on front hinge, crease down rear flap, light rubbing. In general, the book is sound and except for the front free endpaper, complete, but has considerable browning/foxing (particularly noticeable on the tissues) and marks from where plants (ferns, leaves, etc.) have been pressed in the past. The map is in very good condition, the coloring is bright, although there is some creasing & small tears at the edges and a few areas of discoloration. The blank page preceding the rear free endpaper is missing the top corner (approx. 2 1/4" x 4 3/4") and there are a few pencil & ink notations on the blank pages. Light waviness and darkening to edges of text block, moderate edge wear to boards and leather - heavier at top/bottom of spine, rubbing to marbled paper-covered boards. Additional pictures of this book are available on request.
