640 pp, large 8vo (9 1/2" H), hard cover in dust jacket. Volume IV only. ISBN 0674403738 B&w illustrations. "With its Declaration of the Rights of Man and Citizen, the French Revolution opened a whole new stage in the history of women, despite t heir conspicous absence from the playbill. The coming century would see women put in their place as never before, their subordination to men codified in all manner of new laws and rules; and yet the period would also witness the birth of fem i n i s m , the unprecedented emergence of women as a collective force in the political arena. The fourth volume in this world-acclaimed series covers the distance between these two poles. It gives us a vibrant picture of a bourgeouis century, dy na mi c an d ex p ansive, in which woman's role in the home was stressed more and more, even as the economic pressures and opportunities of the industrial revolution drew her out of the house; in which woman's growing role in the family as the cente r o f a ll mo ra ls an d virtues pressed her into public service fighting social ills...." 223 pp, 11 1/4" H. Profusely illustrated with b&w and colour photographs, maps, reproductions. "The real-life quest to free WWII planes (6 P-38 Lightnings and 2 B-17 Flying Fortress bombers), entombed within a Greenland glacier. They had become an Arctic legend. Tales of an entire squadron of war-birds from 1942 still sitting on the ice in Greenland were passed from one pilot to another. On a jaunt to the far north in 1980, two pilots from Atlanta, Georgia, heard the story and decided to look for the lost planes. What began as casual curiosity soon became a twelve-year adventure and a multimillion-dollar obsession. Here is the gripping, true story of how perseverance triumphed over seemingly impossible odds in pursuit of a dream." Slight bump at top of spine, very light wrinkling at bottom of spine. Dust jacket has wrinkling and tiny tear at top of spine - archivally taped, minor edge wrinkling, very light rubbing.

James Lorimer, Toronto, 1977.
95 pp, 8 3/8" H, soft cover. B&w photographs. ISBN 0888621493 "Mennonites are among the earliest settlers of nineteenth-century Ontario. A law-abiding, deeply religious and pacifist people, they travelled from Pennsylvania by wagon and foot to s ettle in the Niagara area around Kitchener-Waterloo and in York County north of Toronto. To Canada the Mennonites brought a long rural tradition of architecture, furniture-making and folk art. These ideas inspired the houses and farms the y b u i l t , and the production of a great variety of furniture, in a style rooted in Germany and Pennsyvania and modified with the Ontario experience. Authors Musson and Nykor concentrate on the furniture of the York County area, and draw paral le l s an d co nt ra s ts with the predominant styles in other Ontario communities. Also discussed are the homes, farms and churches of the Mennonite community. These too are distinctive in style while unmistakeably part of the larger nineteenth-c ent ur y Ont ar io tra dit io n."
