1 Aiken, Conrad. SELECTED POEMS.
New York Charles Scribner's Sons 1929 First, limited edition. Hard Cover Fair Signed by Author
361 pp, 8 1/2" H. Green cloth spine with gilt lettering/decorative banding, patterned paper-covered boards. *Lacking the publisher's slipcase.* No. 3 of 210 copies, numbered and signed by Conrad Aiken on the limitation page. Aiken was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for Poetry for 'Selected Poems' in 1930. Inscribed on the front free endpaper: "For Adrianne / on the way to / Hollywood / from / Philip Merivale / March : 1932". Philip Merivale was born in India, began his acting and screenwriting career in England, later moving to Los Angeles. This book is from the library of the actor Raymond Massey and we presume the 'Adrianne' of the dedication was Massey's first wife, Adrianne Allen (m.1929-1939). Ms. Allen is perhaps best known for her role in Noel Coward's 'Private Lives'. Following her divorce from Massey, Ms. Allen married American lawyer, William Dwight Whitney (and Massey married Whitney's ex-wife). In 1957 she joined her daughter, Anna Massey and Philip Merivale's son, John Merivale, in the Broadway production "The Reluctant Debutante", playing Sheila Broadbent, mother of the character played by Anna. Many pages have not been opened and others have rough edges from opening, several edge tears (archivally taped) or pieces missing from margins/corners between pages 329 & 336 - no text missing, age darkening to edges of text block - especially top of text block, moderate to heavy edge wear to boards - more at corners, browning to spine, light browning and some thin brown stains on boards, very light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, line dent across bottom of text block, small bump at top edge of rear board.

176 pp, 8 3/6" H. B&w reproductions, maps. "In the summer of 1792, two Spanish schooners, the 'Sutil' and the 'Mexicana', were ordered to inspect the Pacific Coast from Vancouver Island to Monterey. The schooners were commanded by two youthful naval officers, Dionisio Alcala Galiano and Cayetano Valdes. Assisted by their scribe and artist, Jose Cadero, they recorded their efforts to find the so-called Strait of Anian, a Spanish Northwest Passage. The full account, here translated into English, reveals much new information on the indigenous peoples of California, Spanish-Indian relations, and the successes and failures of the Franciscan missionaries. Also included is a vocabulary and catechism of the Carmel Mission Indians missing in earlier editions. In introductory chapters and notes, Donald C. Cutter supplements the authors' observations with a brief history of California and biographical information on the authors, other naval officers, and the soldiers and friars." SONGS OF THE SEA: THE TALES AND TUNES OF SAILORS AND SAILING SHIPS., Hugill, Stan.
18 Hugill, Stan. SONGS OF THE SEA: THE TALES AND TUNES OF SAILORS AND SAILING SHIPS.
McGraw-Hill, Maidenhead, 1977.
198 pp, small 4to (10" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0070311382 Profusely illustrated in b&w and colour with reproductions, photographs, musical notation. "Life was short, brutal, lonely and joyless for the 'jolly tar', except for strong dr ink, women - and the solace of song. So he sang: short, rhythmic, onomatopoeic chants to time his backbreaking work at capstan and halyard, the famous 'shanties'. Or longer, ribald or forlorn ditties for idle moments, called 'forebitters' a f t e r t h e metal bollards on the fo'c's'lehead. He sang bravura songs when outward bound; yearning, sexier songs for the homeward reach; warning songs of pirates, press gangs, and faithless maidens; and songs of admiration for the likes of s u ch s ai lo rs as ' Bold MacCarteney'....And here they are, the authentic words and music of more than a hundred sea songs and chants in half a dozen languages. Some are as old as the mists of time, some as new as the great steel-hulled four-ma st ers in th e n itr a te run s of the 1890s....To describe and interpret that history, the book begins with an illustrated look at the sailors' varied machines: ships, brigs, barks, schooners, sloops and so on - and their marvelously complex rigg ing s. Ther e is a h andy g los sary of terms and vernacular, and many clear explanations of customs and language, from the above-mentioned forebitters to the gruesome 'Nelson's Blood' and the ever-present 'Armstrong's Patent' - the muscle power that ma de ev eryth ing g o. T he sail or's skills, dress, pay, superstitions, drink, food - and loves - are clearly described and pictured. There are anecdotes galore: stories of shanghaiing and mutiny, shipwreck and cannabilism, storms and trop ical isle s. Ev ery so ng is transl ate d int o Eng lish (and cleaned up a bit) where necessary, and accompanied by a brief history of its origins and its travels from country to country. But try singing the original words in French or Dutch or ev en (S wedis h or No rwegian ), if only fo r th eir wo nderfu l rhythms." 158 pp, 8vo (8 1/8" H). "(The subject of this novel) is the consciousness of one man, during one day in 1962, in and around Los Angeles. George, the 'single man' of the title, a middle-aged professor of English, has every reason to live in the past, but even the memory of his friend, Jim, killed in a car crash, does not prevent him from resolutely living in the present. From the first moment of waking consciousness the novel fans out over the day, taking in a hilariously funny lecture on a Huxley novel, and culminating in an unexpected meeting with Kenny, one of his students, in a bar on the seafront. Mr Isherwood has never been so mercilessly frank as here - though the frankness is tempered by his usual wit and compassion." Tiny dent in top margin of page 7, very light browning to edges of text block, two tiny dents on bottom edge of front board.
