STORIES OF KING ARTHUR AND HIS KNIGHTS., Crowlesmith, J., Rev.
3 Crowlesmith, J., Rev. STORIES OF KING ARTHUR AND HIS KNIGHTS.
London Aldine Hard Cover Good Fair H.S. Greig.
172 pp, 7 1/2" H. Red boards with black lettering/illustration on spine and front board. Colour frontispiece, b&w illustrations. No date, but Xmas greetings on free front endpaper dated 1936. "The stories that follow are taken from Sir Thomas Malory's 'Morte D'Arthur', the great collection of romances about King Arthur which was written in the fifteenth century, and printed first of all by Caxton. Scholars say that Arthur was a British hero, one of the leaders of the Britons against the English invaders in the sixth century. In course of time legends centred round his name in the memory of the defeated race. To the original stories the Middle Ages added others, some of which belonged to later heroes, and, finally, these were combined with various legends of the Christian Church about the finding of the Holy Grail, the cup from which Christ is said to have drunk at the Last Supper with His disciples. Thus we get the beautiful cycle of romances which shines in the pages of Malory's great book. This version has been written for younger children. As far as possible the old-world style of Malory's narrative has been preserved, while the stories chosen are those which seem to present a message to youth." Contents: Introduction; The Sword in the Stone; King Arthur sees a Strange Knight; The Sword Excalibur; Balin, the Poor Knight; The Invisible Knight; The Battle of the Brothers; The Table Round; The Merciful Knight; The Death of Merlin; King Arthur and Accolon; The Lady of the Lake; The Marvellous Giant; The Two Giants; The Disguised Knight; The Shipwreck of Sir Lamorak; Launcelot and the Dragon; Sir Bors in the Castle Adventurous; Sir Gawaine's Rescue; The Knight with the Ugly Coat; Sir Tristram and King Mark; The Story of Sir Alisander; When Sir Launcelot was Mad; Seeking the Holy Grail; Sir Galahad's Shield; Sir Launcelot and the Holy Grail; Sir Percivale and the Lion; The Holy Grail is Seen; Fed by the Holy Grail; The Death of Sir Galahad; The Poisoned Apple; The Lady of Astolat; End of the Table Round; The Death of Arthur. 6 Dene Wodih Society, compiler. Edited by Patrick Moore and Angela Wheelock. WOLVERINE MYTHS AND VISIONS: DENE TRADITIONS FROM NORTHERN ALBERTA.
Edmonton University of Alberta Press 1990 0888641486 / 9780888641489 First Edition Hard Cover Good- Very Good- Dia Thurston.
259 pp, 9 1/4" H. Ex-libary. B&w drawings, maps. "The Dene Dhaa traditionally believe that long ago all the animals talked and lived like humans. Two Animal People stand out in their stories: Wolf and Wolverine. Wolf often helps people in Dene myth and is respected by many traditional Dene who will not trap wolves for fur. Wolverine is a trickster and cultural transformer. Although the relationship between humans and wolverines may often be antagonistic since wolverines destroy traps and ruin belongings, in these stories, Wolverine also has great powers of healing and transformation. Historically, stories were considered as valuable possessions and Dene storytellers are part of a well established oral tradition. These stories collected by the Dene Wodih Society come from religious leaders, respected elders, and authorities on Dene tradition. The Dene Dhaa, a group of Athapaskan-speaking natives, also known as the Slave or Slavey Indians, occupy three reserves in northwestern Alberta. Because their settlements were until recently dispersed and isolated, they have maintained their language and traditions. Recorded in the Dene language with literal interlinear English gloses and in a free English translation, this collection of stories represents a major contribution to the documentation of the Dene language, ethnography and folklore." This is an ex-library book with library stamps on top/bottom of text block and on title-page, large areas of surface paper loss and glue/paper residue on three endpapers from removal of library protective jacket and card pocket. Dust jacket has light edge wrinkling - mainly at top of spine, small surface paper pull on inside of each flap, soft wrinkling on rear flap, label glue residue at bottom of spine.

THROUGH GERMAN EYES: THE BRITISH AND THE SOMME 1916., Duffy, Christopher.
7 Duffy, Christopher. THROUGH GERMAN EYES: THE BRITISH AND THE SOMME 1916.
London Weidenfeld & Nicolson 2006 0297846892 / 9780297846895 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good
383 pp, large 8vo (9 7/16" H). B&w photographs, maps, drawings. ""The Battle of the Somme has an enduring legacy, the image of 'lions led by donkeys' established by Alan Clark; of brave British soldiers sent to their deaths by incompetent generals. but, as Duffy reveals in this groundbreaking study, this was never the German view; indeed, the Germans had great respect for the British forces. The evidence for this is both copious and unfamiliar, discovered in archived official papers, histories, memoirs and letters, and most revealingly of all in the results of the interrogation of British prisoners of war. The picture that emerges is a far cry from 'Blackadder'. The questioning by German intelligence officers was more systematic and detailed than that employed by their British counterparts. It was also more open-ended, encouraging those captured to speak freely and at length whilst still in shock from combat and capture. Their recollections are of unique interest because of their immediacy, separated from the event by a matter of hours or a few days at most, rather than being contaminated by the passing of time and outside opinion. This is not another of the number of comprehensive histories of the Battle of the Somme. Instead it looks at aspects of the battle from the German point of view, showing in particular the Germans' perception of the British performance and mentality in the course of that long struggle. From the German point of view, the battle was a disaster. And the fact that every British soldier taken prisoner still believed Britian would win the war gave German intelligence teams a fair indication that their empire would go down to defeat." Minor cigarette odor, very light browning to edges of textblock, faint thumb print at fore-edge of free front endpaper. Dust jacket has light edge wrinkling - mainly at top of spine.

8 Farmer, Penelope, ed. SISTERS: AN ANTHOLOGY.
London Allen Lane / Penguin Press 1999 0713993022 / 9780713993028 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good+
454 pp, large 8vo (9 3/8" H). "As one of three sisters herself, Penelope Farmer sets her exploration of sisterhood in an autobiographical framework, describing loving and not so loving sisters in the past and present generations on all sides of her family. With the help of writers in many fields and over many centuries, she guides us through the peaks and troughs of sistery love, both between sisters and between sisters and brothers - from childhood, separation, love, marriage and parenthood, to old age and death itself. Famous literary sisters appear: the Brontes; Virginia Woolf and Vanessa Bell; the Mitfords; Mary Lamb and brother Charles; Vera Brittain. Alongside them the theatrical and musical ones: Joan Fontaine and Olivia de Havilland; Maria Callas and her sister; Jacqueline du Pre and hers; Mozart and his sister. Then there are the well-known fictional sisters: the March sisters; Dorothea and Celia Brooke; the Schlegel sisters; Ursula and Gudrun from 'Women in Love'. And many not so well-known sisters, both fictional and non-fictional besides. We observe the sisterly bonds of bees, lions, elephants, gorillas and chimpanzees. We are guided by Richard Dawkins through the genetics of ant colonies. And, throughout, we are asked to reflect on the nature of sisterhood itself. Is a sister born not made? What is the essence of the sisterly bond? What relationship does that bond have to the myth of sisterhood constructed around it? - a myth leading to all those symbolic sisterhoods, of nurses, nuns, feminists and so forth, a section on whom concludes the book. Through poetry, prose, autobiography, memoir, science and anthroplogy , Penelope Farmer pieces together the world of sisters and sisterhood, creating a rich tapestry of evocative and often moving writing that will find echoes in the experience of all who have or are sisters, or even just those who would like to have had them." Slight bump to top/bottom of front hinge. Dust jacket has very light edge wrinkling - mainly at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, minor rubbing, tiny dint on spine.

Toronto Alfred A. Knopf Canada 2006 067697421X / 9780676974218 First Canadian Edition. Hard Cover Near Fine Very Good+
155 pp, 8" H. Volume V of the 'Myths Series'. "Samson the hero: a brave warrior, leader of men and Nazarite of God? Or a misfit given to whoring and lust, who failed to fulfill his destiny? In 'Lion's Honey', award-winning writer David Grossman takes on one of the most vivid and controversial characters in the Bible. Revisiting Samson's famous battle with the lion, his many women and his betrayal by them all - including the only one he ever loved - Grossman gives us a provocative new take on the story and its climax, Samson's final act of death, bringing down a temple on himself and three thousand Philistines. In exhilarating and lucid prose, Grossman reveals the journey of a single lonely and tortured soul who never found a true home in the world, who was uncomfortable in his very body and who, some might say, was the precursor of today's suicide bombers." B&w photographs. "Wallace Kirkland has been a photographer for 'Life Magazine' since it began. One of the editors of that magazine is said to have remarked upon hearing of the book, 'I always said you were the world's worst photographer, and the world's best writer'. This book consists of the stories behind Kirkland's photographic assignments - some of the ones which became famous: The Fox Hunt, The Birth of the Dragonfly, and Jamaican Boyhood: A Memory, and Man of Letters: Arthur Birnstengle, who wrote his congressman for a wife with extra ordinary results, and some of the ones which were never run, such as the Portrait of Gandhi when he got Gandhi's autograph on the tail end of a goat. The range of writing in this book is as wide as the Missouri. Mr. Kirkland goes from some exceptionally beautiful nature writing in the chapter on Turtles to moving remembrances of things and people in Jamaican Boyhood; to rowdy vignettes in the Life of a Wandering Photographer. Through all his adventures we see A Hero of our Time, a Don Quixote with a camera who is doing the work which he likes best."
