Dundurn, Toronto, 2008, first edition.
253 pp, 8vo (9" H), soft cover. ISBN 9781550027846 B&w illustrations. 'The secrets of Voodoo, Santeria, and Obeah are among the oldest enigmas in the world. Their roots go back to prehistoric Africa - perhaps even beyond that. From the sixteent h century onwards, the slave trade brough these ancient mysteries to the West, where they blended strangely with traditional Christianity: the ancient African gods became identified with legendary saints. This integration of the two faiths slow l y e volved to form the many varieties of Voodoo, Santeria, and Obeah that are widely practised throughout the world today. Contemporary Voodoo priests, priestesses, magicians, and enchanters use rare herbs and spices as well as charms, dolls, an d ta l is mans to control the natural world in many ways science cannot always explain. Accounts of their inexplicable successes are examined in depth. Sinister accounts of zombiism - reports of the living dead - are also inseparably interwoven th ro ugh ou t V oodoo history. What powers do these old religions still possess?" Inside - clean and tight with no previous ownership marks. Exterior - clean and bright. Fine

THOSE WERE THE DAYS: THE LORE OF HOCKEY BY THE LEGENDS OF THE GAME., Fischler, Stan.
8 Fischler, Stan. THOSE WERE THE DAYS: THE LORE OF HOCKEY BY THE LEGENDS OF THE GAME.
New York Dodd, Mead 1976 0396070159 / 9780396070153 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good
337 pp, 8vo (8 1/2" H). Pictorial endpapers, b&w photographs. "There was a time when winters were cold, the ice was black, and hockey was played as much for fun as for the small money earned by the few good skaters involved. The slapshot and the red line and the curved stick were all in the future. Shifts lasted sixty minutes. And nips from pocket flasks kept the legs churning. Then the game moved indoors, taking a few of these hardy survivors along with it. The competition grew fierce. Large stadiums attracted large crowds. And the now bigger money gave rise to such legendary names as Cyclone Taylor, Newsy Lalonde, and Eddie Shore; Frank Boucher, Johnny Gagnon and Howie Morenz; Gordie Howe, Glenn Hall, and Maurice Richard. Stan Fischler spent more than five years crisscrossing North America to collect on tape the fascinating reminiscences of these modest, unassuming, once so very talented players." Very light edge wear, minor wrinkling at top of spine. Dust jacket is price-clipped, light edge wrinkling - mainly at top of spine, very light rubbing/soiling on the rear panel.

THE UNKNOWN NAVY: CANADA'S WORLD WAR II MERCHANT NAVY., Halford, Robert G.
15 Halford, Robert G. THE UNKNOWN NAVY: CANADA'S WORLD WAR II MERCHANT NAVY.
St Catharines, Ontario Vanwell 1995 1551250160 / 9781551250168 First Edition Hard Cover Fine Very Good
272 pp, 10" H. B&w photographs. "Compared to the well-published achievements of the Navy, Army and Air Force, an ocean of silence surrounds the long-gone Canadian Merchant Navy. And yet, Canada operated the wartime world's fourth largest Merchant Navy, almost all of it built in Canadian shipyards. Robert Halford provides an in-depth look at the Merchant Navy from its glorious beginnings to its unceremonious dissolution. During wartime, the merchant seamen were the heroes of the 1939-1945 war, the fourth arm of the Services. By 1948 they had undergone a quick image change, transformed from heroes to anonymous troublemakers hindering the shipping industry. 'The Unknown Navy' endeavours to throw light on the Merchant Navy's important contribution to the Allied cause during World War II." Dust jacket has a tiny scuff/dent on the front panel.

235 pp, 8vo (8 11/16" H). B&w photographs. "As Senior Intelligence Officer of 35 Wing, Irving studied and furthered the technical and tactical resources of low level photographic reconnaissance and the prompt distribution of intelligence derived from it. The unacceptable casualties incurred by 35 Wing in supporting the raid on Dieppe were proof of the tardy recognition by Army/Air planning staffs of the need for total co-operation between the Services in action if the liberation of Europe was to be achieved. The theme of this book is the contribution of 35 Wing to the preparation and achievement of Operation Overlord, the reconnoitring of V1 missile sites in France that subsequent bombing rendered inoperable and, above all, its services to 1st Canadian Army throughout the ensuing campaign. This personal record reflects an abiding memory and admiration for the skills, the devotion to duty, the light hearted companionship and dauntless courage of pilots inspired by exemplary and discerning commanding officers." Slight bump to bottom corner of rear board, minor wrinkling at bottom of spine. Dust jacket has very light edge wrinkling.
